Howells-Dodge Boys 2-2 in last four games; Girls go 1-1 at BRLD Holiday Tournament

The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team won 48-42 over Hartington Cedar Catholic at the Knight Classic at Midland in Fremont on Thursday, December 21st before falling 52-47 to Fremont Bergan in the championship game on Friday, December 22nd. The Jaguars downed Homer 67-38 at the BRLD Holiday Tournament last Friday before falling 62-54 to the host Wolverines in the championship game.

The Trojans led the Jaguars 14-13 at the end of one. Howells-Dodge doubled up Cedar Catholic 12-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 25-20 lead into the locker room.

Both teams scored 9 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score after 3 was 34-29 in favor of the Jaguars.

Howells-Dodge won the 4th quarter 14-13.

Dax VanLengen recorded 13 points and 7 rebounds while Connor Blum totaled 11 points. Caden Jackson had 9 while Ryan Macholan scored 8. Lane Hegemann pulled down 8 rebounds.

Head Coach Cole Fischer says his team's defense was the difference in the win. "We were able to handle them defensively and grind out a hard fought win."

Bergan led the Jaguars 17-14 and won the 2nd quarter 13-11 to take a 30-25 lead into the locker room.

Bergan outscored Howells-Dodge 16-7 in the 3rd quarter to go up 46-32 at the end of three.

The Jaguars put up 15 points in the 4th quarter compared to 6 for Bergan.

Josh Brester had a team-high 14 points while VanLengen registered 9. Blum added 8 points and 8 rebounds while Hegemann posted 8 points.

Fischer says his team had a chance to win it at the end. "We had a shot in the 4th, but couldn't get over the hump. We played tough in the 4th and cut to 1 possession."

Howells-Dodge jumped out to a 17-6 lead on Homer and outscored them 14-4 in the 2nd quarter to take a 31-10 lead into the locker room.

The Jaguars won the 3rd quarter 17-12 to go up 48-22 at the end of three.

Howells-Dodge notched 19 points in the 4th quarter compared to 16 for Homer.

VanLengen had a game-high 12 points while Jackson and Blum totaled 9 each. Kade Hegemann chipped in 8 while Brester notched 7.

Fischer says it was a good team win. "We had great energy after Christmas break. I thought we played well defensively. Had 12 players score."

BRLD jumped on the Jaguars 17-5 at the end of one. The Wolverines won the 2nd quarter 17-14 to take a 34-19 lead into the locker room.

BRLD outscored Howells-Dodge 10-8 in the 3rd quarter to go up 44-27 at the end of three.

The Jaguars notched 27 points in the 4th quarter compared to 18 for the Wolverines.

Jackson racked up 13 points while Blum had 11. Kade Hegemann tallied 10 while VanLengen collected 7 rebounds.

Howells-Dodge continues to play good basketball, the Jaguars have just been unable to knock off the great teams for the most part.

Howells-Dodge (7-5) takes on Humphrey St. Francis (6-4) on the road Friday night.

The Flyers beat Louisville 63-48 on Day 3 of the Nebraska Wesleyan Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

Humphrey St. Francis is a good team, but I don't think the Flyers are as dominant as they have been in the past.

I think the Jaguars have a great chance to beat them, and should being the bigger school.

This is a big one and a game Howells-Dodge really needs with some other tough games coming up later on in the season.

The Jaguars are definitely capable of winning, they just have to go in there and play their game.

Bergan and BRLD are great teams, probably better than Humphrey St. Francis, so I look for Howells-Dodge to go into town and pick up a big win.

The Jaguars need to continue to get the balanced scoring they have in their last four games.

Multiple players have stepped up and contributed in a big way for Howells-Dodge, and that has to continue.

The Jaguars also have to keep getting after things defensively, and apply pressure on the ball.

Howells-Dodge has to create havoc in the backcourt, and force turnovers and get out in transition and score easy lay ups.

Lane Hegemann also has to be a beast in the post, and continue to dominate the glass and the boards.

Blum and VanLengen have to keep scoring in double digits as does Jackson, Brester, and Kade Hegemann.

The Jaguars need a complete team effort to come away with the win in this one.

Howells-Dodge has to play hard, smart, physical, tenacious, tough, gritty, and with pride, passion, drive, and determination.

The Jaguars have to be the aggressor offensively and defensively, and must go out there and make things happen.

Howells-Dodge has to control pace of the game if at all possible.

Friday night's game will be aired on 107.9 the Bull.

The Howells-Dodge Girls Basketball Team won 53-52 over BRLD on a last second shot last Friday at the BRLD Holiday Tournament before losing the championship to GACC on Saturday, 77-43.

The Wolverines got out to a 17-12 lead on the Jaguars after one. Howells-Dodge won the 2nd quarter 12-10 to cut the deficit to 3 at 27-24 at halftime.

BRLD won the 3rd quarter 15-14 to go up 42-38 at the end of three.

The Jaguars outscored the Wolverines 15-10 in the 4th quarter.

Erin Prusa had a double-double of 31 points and 10 rebounds while Grace Dvorak totaled 8 points and 7 rebounds. Jessi Brester added 7 rebounds.

The Bluejays got out to a 19-13 lead at the end of one. GACC outscored Howells-Dodge 24-11 in the 2nd quarter to take a 43-24 lead into the locker room.

The Bluejays won the 3rd quarter 18-14 to go up 61-38 at the end of three.

GACC outscored the Jaguars 16-5 in the 4th quarter.

Madyson Cech and Macey Kulhanek notched 9 points apiece to lead the team while Prusa and Dvorak posted 8 and 7, respectively.

I thought Howells-Dodge played well and did a nice job coming from behind against BRLD. GACC must of played an exceptional game to win the way they did.

The Jaguars (5-5) take on Humphrey St. Francis (11-0) on the road Friday night.

The Flyers won the Nebraska Wesleyan Holiday Tournament, beating BDS 61-53 in the championship game on Saturday.

Humphrey St. Francis is a great team, but if there's anyone that can beat them it's Howells-Dodge.

After all, the Jaguars are the defending Class C-2 State Champions, and know what it's like to be in the Flyers' position.

Humphrey St. Francis in the driver's seat right now, but I'm sure Howells-Dodge would just love to unseat them and end their undefeated season.

I think the Jaguars are much better than their record indicates, they've just lost to some great teams.

The Flyers are another one of those great teams so it will be interesting to see what happens and what takes place Friday night.

I think Howells-Dodge would probably like a game in the 40's or 50's. Anything higher than that might be too much for the Jaguars to handle.

A game in the 30's could be either good or bad for Howells-Dodge based on the results of their two games decided in the 30's this season.

The Jaguars have to come out and execute the game plan, and play up to their full potential.

Prusa, Kulhanek, Cech, Dvorak, and Brester need to have big games for Howells-Dodge.

The Jaguars need 4 or 5 girls to score double digits or close, not just 2 or 3.

Howells-Dodge also need that one player, like Prusa, to take over on a consistent basis.

She was the biggest reason why the Jaguars beat BRLD, and that kind of performance needs to be repeated Friday night if Howells-Dodge is to have a shot to win.

The Jaguars have to come into this game believing they can win.

Howells-Dodge has to put the GACC game behind them, and come out and play with confidence.

The past is the past, and nothing can be done about it now.

The Jaguars just have to regroup and come focused and ready to play Friday night.

The game will be aired on 107.9 the Bull. Pregame will start at about 5:45-5:50 with the game tipping off at 6:00 p.m.
