Clarkson/Leigh Boys go 0-2 at Shelby Holiday Tournament; Girls win it

The Clarkson/Leigh Boys Basketball Team went 0-2 at the Shelby Holiday Tournament last week, falling 63-54 to the host Huskies in the first game last Thursday, and 49-33 last Friday in the 3rd place game.

Shelby-Rising City got out to a 16-11 lead at the end of one. The Patriots won the 2nd quarter 13-12 to make it a 28-24 game at halftime.

The Huskies outscored Clarkson/Leigh 15-11 in the 3rd quarter to go up 43-35 at the end of three.

Shelby-Rising City won the 4th quarter 20-19.

Anthony Bruhn led the team with 14 points while Daniel Beller totaled 12 points and 9 rebounds. Haden Held notched 12 points while Garrett Schroeder had 11.

The Patriots led the Bulldogs 8-6 at the end of one. Clarkson/Leigh won the 2nd quarter 15-14 to take a 23-20 lead into the locker room.

Friend outscored the Patriots 16-5 in the 3rd quarter to lead 39-25 at the end of three.

The Bulldogs outscored Clarkson/Leigh 13-5 in the 4th quarter.

Schroeder had 15 points while Bruhn registered 8 points and 8 rebounds. Beller added 10 rebounds.

I thought the Patriots competed well against the Huskies and in the 1st half against the Bulldogs. I'm not sure what happened in the 2nd half against Friend.

Clarkson/Leigh (0-10) hosts Tekamah-Herman (0-9) in High School Basketball on 107.9 the Bull on Saturday.

The Tigers lost 84-31 at BRLD Friday night.

Something has to give in this game, and I look for the Patriots to pick up their first win of the season.

Clarkson/Leigh may be winless, but the Patriots have been much more competitive than Tekamah-Herman has to this point.

All of Clarkson/Leigh's hard work should pay off in this one.

I look for Bruhn, Beller, Held, and Schroeder, and others, to have big games for the Patriots.

I think this is one of those games where a lot of kids are going to play and contribute.

I'm sure the losing has been difficult for Clarkson/Leigh to take, but it all should come to an end on Saturday.

The Tigers are very young, and have had trouble scoring and defending this season.

I don't think the Patriots will blow out Tekamah-Herman by any means, but I think a 10-15 point win is not out of the realm of possibility.

I think Clarkson/Leigh has some good players, and is a better team than their record indicates.

Inconsistency has reared its ugly head on the Patriots, but hopefully a win on Saturday gets Clarkson/Leigh headed in the right direction.

I look for this game to be good and go well for the Patriots. I think Clarkson/Leigh will win this one rather easily, handily, and comfortably.

I think this game will be a lot closer than all of Tekamah-Herman's games have been so far this season, but the Patriots should still win.

Saturday's game can be heard on the Bull after the Girls game, which is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.

The Clarkson/Leigh Girls Basketball Team won the Shelby Holiday Tournament last week, defeating Shelby-Rising City 45-34 in the 1st game last Thursday, and Friend 40-35 in the championship game last Friday.

The Huskies got out to an 11-9 lead after one. Clarkson/Leigh outscored Shelby-Rising City 13-10 in the 2nd quarter to take a 22-21 lead into the locker room.

The Patriots won the 3rd quarter 11-10 to go up 33-31 at the end of three.

Clarkson/Leigh quadrupled up the Huskies 12-3 in the 4th quarter.

Ashlynn Novotny had 14 points and 9 rebounds while Halee Steffensmeier chipped in 8 points.

The Patriots jumped on the Bulldogs 14-3 after one. Friend outscored Clarkson/Leigh 11-6 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 20-14 game at halftime.

The Patriots won the 3rd quarter 12-5 to extend the lead to 13 at 32-19 at the end of three.

Friend doubled up Clarkson/Leigh 16-8 in the 4th quarter.

Steffensmeier had a game-high 13 points while Kaegan Held notched 9. Novotny totaled 10 rebounds.

What a great job by the Patriots to win this Holiday Tournament. Clarkson/Leigh played championship basketball, and I'm willing to bet winning the tournament feels pretty dang good.

The Patriots (8-3) take on Tekamah-Herman (3-10) at home Saturday afternoon in a game that will be aired on 107.9 the Bull.

The Tigers lost 64-40 at home to Omaha Roncalli Tuesday night, and fell 48-25 at BRLD Friday night.

I look for Clarkson/Leigh to grind out another close win in this one.

Tekamah-Herman has started to play better basketball, but the Patriots have been more consistent and stronger defensively you could say.

Clarkson/Leigh has to key on Marin Jetensky, Jadyn Fleischman, and Gabby Mercier.

These three players do a lot of the scoring for the Tigers, and so the Patriots have to try and hold each of them under their averages.

Defense wins championships, and so far Clarkson/Leigh's defense has been stellar.

The Patriots have to keep winning though as Guardian Angels Central Catholic looks very good at the moment.

Clarkson/Leigh might get a wildcard to state, but the Patriots have to remain hungry and keep winning.

I think winning the Shelby Holiday Tournament helps Clarkson/Leigh know they can do it and win championships.

I think the Holiday Tournament Championship win is only the start of great things or the Patriots this season.

Clarkson/Leigh has to be proud of what they've accomplished so far, but has to want more.

The Patriots can't be satisfied or complacent by what they've done so far.

Clarkson/Leigh has a couple of huge games against Humphrey St. Francis and Elgin Public/Pope John coming up so the Patriots have to play lights out against the Tigers.

Saturday's game can be heard on the Bull starting at 3:30 p.m. Join us for all the action. Sports Director Joel Janecek will bring you all the action.
