Winnebago Boys 3-0 in last 3 games; Girls 2-1 in same stretch
The Winnebago Boys Basketball Team knocked off Dakota Valley, SD 69-68 at the CNOS Classic at the Tyson Events Center Thursday night before winning 80-53 over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge at home Friday night, and 79-50 at home over Emerson-Hubbard Tuesday night.
The Indians led the Bears 21-13 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 16-13 to take a 37-26 lead into the locker room.
Winnebago outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 26-17 in the 3rd quarter to go up 63-43 at the end of three.
The Indians outscored the Bears 17-10 in the 4th quarter.
Winnebago led the Pirates 30-7 after one before Emerson-Hubbard won the 2nd quarter 22-21 to make it a 51-29 game at halftime.
The Indians outscored the Pirates 16-7 in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead to 67-36 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard won the 4th quarter 14-12.
Nice stretch of games for Winnebago. The Indians won Thursday's game on a buzzer beater by Manape Cleveland, and took care of business Friday and Tuesday. Job well done for Winnebago in my book.
The Indians (10-1) take on Wynot (7-4) on the road Friday night.
The Blue Devils won 53-37 at Niobrara/Verdigre Tuesday night.
Wynot has a fairly good record, but they have a loss to Homer, who Winnebago beat 90-41.
Seeing as the Indians are a C-1 school and the Blue Devils a D-2, Winnebago shouldn't have much trouble with Wynot I wouldn't think.
The Indians have to come out and play well early, and put the Blue Devils away.
I thought Emerson-Hubbard kept things closer than Winnebago would have liked so the Indians have to get back to their dominate, assertive ways for 4 quarters.
Winnebago has a big game on Saturday against Carroll, IA at the Jennie Ed MAC Shootout at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs at 4:00 p.m. so the Indians have to gear up for and play well in that one as well.
All of Winnebago's focus should be on Wynot right now though.
The Indians have to come ready to play a four quarter game, and must put the Blue Devils away early to rest starters for Saturday.
It will be a quick turnaround and a lot of driving between Friday and Saturday so Winnebago has to stay fresh and get backups into the game against Wynot by the second half if at all possible.
The Indians want to stay sharp with their starters in the game quite a bit of the time too, but starters need to rest at some point, in my opinion.
Winnebago should comfortably beat Wynot, but the Indians have to come out focused and assertive, and must be ready to go from the get go.
Winnebago has to be relentless on offense and on the boards, and must pressure the ball the length of the court as much as possible.
The Indians have to try and come up with as many steals and transition baskets as possible, and keep the Blue Devils on their heels.
Winnebago has to play up to their potential, and come out and dominate for 4 quarters.
There shouldn't be any question as to what the Indians need to do Friday night.
Winnebago knows what's expected of them and what they need to do, and I fully expect the Indians to come out and handle their business.
The Winnebago Girls Basketball Team is 2-1 in their last three games, defeating Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 65-57 at home Friday night before losing 76-70 to Dakota Valley, SD at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City on Saturday, and beating Emerson-Hubbard 70-33 at home Tuesday night.
The Indians held a 20-12 lead on the Bears after one before Laurel-Concord-Coleridge won the 2nd quarter 9-8 to make it a 28-21 game at halftime.
The Bears outscored Winnebago 22-18 in the 3rd quarter to pull within 3 at 46-43 at the end of three.
The Indians outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 19-14 in the 4th quarter.
Jayla Price led all players with 26 points while Charli Earth recorded 21 points and 9 rebounds. Kae Earth added 13 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double.
Dakota Valley, SD got out to a 20-8 lead on Winnebago after one quarter of play. The Indians won the 2nd quarter 19-17 to make it a 37-27 game at halftime.
Both teams scored 21 points in the 3rd quarter, and it was a 58-48 game at the end of three.
Winnebago outscored Dakota Valley, SD 22-18 in the 4th quarter.
Charli Earth finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds while Kae Earth notched 16 points. Price added 15 points and 8 rebounds while Isabel Earth and Deonna Harris chipped in 10 and 7 points, respectively.
The Indians jumped on the Pirates 14-6 after one. Winnebago outscored Emerson-Hubbard 21-12 in the 2nd quarter to go up 35-18 at halftime.
The Indians outscored the Pirates 31-5 in the 3rd quarter to build a 66-23 lead at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard won the 4th quarter 10-4.
I think Winnebago is playing as good of basketball as they have been all season.
The Indians (6-6) battle Wynot (8-4) on the road Friday night.
The Blue Devils won 59-13 at Niobrara/Verdigre Tuesday night.
I look for this game to be very good and for both teams to really get after one another.
I think Winnebago's offense and ability to score is going to put them over the top in this one. I feel the Indians may give up some points, but I feel Charli Earth, Kae Earth, Isabel Earth, Price, and Harris will be too much for Wynot to handle.
Winnebago is a C-1 school too and Wynot is D-2 so I think that plays a big part in this one as well.
The Indians are having a great season, and to knock off a traditional power like the Blue Devils would be a huge deal in my book.
Winnebago has to come out and play hard, smart, fast, fundamentally sound, physical, tenacious, gritty, passionate, and prideful.
This is one of those games where the Indians have to keep a level head and not the emotions of the game get the best of them.
Wynot is the type of team that is going to continuously work hard and grind things out so the Indians must stay focused at all times.
Winnebago has to play a complete, four quarter game, and has to knock down shots from the perimeter, as well as get the ball inside and get to the free throw line.
The Indians are having a much better season than they have in recent years, and it has been nice to see.
Winnebago has been much more competitive than in the past, and has made some real strides this year, in my opinion.
To knock off a multiple state champion in Wynot would be the tip of the iceberg to what has already been a good season for the Indians.
Winnebago has to want it more than the Blue Devils, and has to go out there and perform at a very high level and be on top of their game Friday night.
This is the start of a really tough stretch of games for the Indians so Winnebago has to be ready to go and be on top of their game Friday night and the rest of the season.
I thought the Emerson-Hubbard game was a nice start and tune up for what is to hopefully come the Indians' way the rest of this year.
