North Bend Central Boys beat Fremont Bergan and Columbus Scotus; Girls down Knights, lose to Shamrocks
The North Bend Central Boys Basketball Team defeated Fremont Bergan 61-52 at home on Saturday and Columbus Scotus 73-48 on the road Tuesday night.
The Tigers doubled up the Knights 18-9 in the 1st quarter before Bergan outscored North Bend Central 21-14 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 32-30 game at halftime in favor of the Tigers.
North Bend Central won the 3rd quarter 18-13 to go up 50-43 at the end of three, and won the 4th quarter 11-9.
Tanner Wietfeld had a team-high 15 points while Austin Endorf and John Emanuel totaled 14 and 11, respectively. Ben Rolenc had 9 points while Jaxon Wietfeld scored 7.
North Bend Central Head Coach Jon Baehr Baehr says the Tigers turned in a strong performance offensively against the Shamrocks, in particular shooting the ball. "Each game is different. I think we take a workman like approach to each game we play. Scotus is well coached and have some really good basketball players. Our main focus was to just working and growing as a team and we happened to shoot the ball very well from the field and from the line. Again, that is a testament to multiple guys putting in time in practice focusing on their game and their shot and working to get better. I think we know however it was one game and we have to continue to improve as we move through the remainder of our season."
North Bend Central (11-2) travels to Oakland-Craig (11-5) Friday night in High School Basketball on 107.9 the Bull.
Baehr says Oakland-Craig figures to be a difficult matchup. "I know with Oakland-Craig they have some very talented players who play the game the right way and are also getting better and better as the year has gone on. They shoot the ball very well and they create mismatches all over the place with their movements and their skill. We will just work as hard as we can to challenge their shots and on the other get the best shot we can get to help us get points on the board vs. them."
The Tigers defeated the Knights 72-62 in North Bend last year.
Baehr says his team is having a nice season so far. "I feel when I look at our season as a whole we have shown growth as a group. We have a lot of guys who have worked very hard on their game and have improved a great deal. We are also starting to work better and better as a unit on both ends of the floor and I feel we have a chance to play some really good basketball as the season progresses. We have changed our schedule a bit this year and I feel it has been a good overall move for us. We have had to play some high level basketball to get through those stretches and I am happy about how much we have grown as a team."
This game figures to be big for East Husker Conference Tournament seeding. Baehr says that's not something his team is focused on. "We don't really have any control over where we are seeded at. So as far as this game goes we will just focus on playing the best we can and the seeding will take care of itself. We have some tremendous teams in our conference and we are fully aware that to do well in the tournament we will have to play high level basketball regardless of where we are seeded."
North Bend Central has won 4 in a row while the Knights have won 8 out of their last 9.
This should be a great game, and I'm really looking forward to calling it.
I look for both teams to really get after one another, and make it a great game.
There's a lot of scoring and talent on both teams, and I think the Tigers and Oakland-Craig will really get after things Friday night.
I look for the game to come down to the wire and 4th quarter.
The game can be heard on the Bull after the Girls Game, which is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
Join us for all the action.
The North Bend Central Girls Basketball Team topped Fremont Bergan 48-40 at home on Saturday, and fell 40-24 at Columbus Scotus Tuesday night.
The Tigers led the Knights 10-8 after one, and outscored Bergan 13-9 in the 2nd quarter to take a 23-17 lead into the locker room.
The Knights won the 3rd quarter 13-11 to make it a 34-30 game at the end of three.
North Bend Central outscored Bergan 14-10 in the 4th quarter.
The Shamrocks got out to a 15-8 lead at the end of one before the Tigers won the 2nd quarter 6-4 to make it a 19-14 game in favor of the Shamrocks at halftime.
Scotus won the 3rd quarter 7-4 to go up 26-18 at the end of three.
The Shamrocks outscored North Bend Central 14-6 in the 4th quarter.
Tough loss for the Tigers against Scotus. Otherwise North Bend Central is playing really good basketball right now, in my opinion.
The Tigers (11-3) take on Oakland-Craig (11-5) on the road Friday night in a game that will be aired on 107.9 the Bull.
North Bend Central Head Coach Aaron Sterup says despite the loss of Kennedy Benne expect Oakland-Craig to still be tough. "I am sure that regardless of injuries, Joe (Anderson) will have them ready to play. They always give us a good game. I don’t think this time will be any different. We still have to be able to handle their pressure and their quickness to be successful."
The Tigers won last year's game 53-49 in North Bend.
Sterup says his squad has to be better offensively than they were against Scotus. "We need to make shots, first and foremost. We also need to limit our turnovers to that we get shots every time down the court."
The Shamrocks snapped the Tigers' 5-game winning streak. The Knights have lost 2 in a row and 3 out of their last 4.
Sterup says his team is having a pretty good year overall. "We have had a pretty good season so far. We feel like we let a couple slip away early in the year, but we have rebounded with some nice wins over good teams lately and I think for the most part we are trending upward, which is good this time of year."
I think North Bend Central has a good chance to rebound again with a win Friday night.
Sterup says the East Husker Conference Tournament will be tough regardless of what seed the Tigers get. "We certainly need to win to get a higher seed. As far as where we stand, that’s hard to say. There are a lot of good teams with good records. The way our schedules are set up, I really have no idea where everyone will end up. I just know that wherever we end up, we will have a tough road to get to where we want to at the end."
I'm sure North Bend Central wouldn't have it any other way than tough.
The Tigers definitely need a big win Friday night to get their confidence back up and get some reassurance.
North Bend Central just had a tough game against Scotus. I don't think that game was the Tigers' best effort.
I look for North Bend Central to rebound in a big way Friday night.
The girls game is set to start at 6:00 p.m. with the boys game to follow on the Bull.
