BRLD Boys and Girls unbeaten in last 3 contests
The BRLD Boys Basketball team is unbeaten in their last three contests, winning 66-53 at home over Oakland-Craig Friday night, 37-31 at Mead on Saturday, and 56-45 at home against Wakefield Tuesday night.
Oakland-Craig held a 14-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter before BRLD outscored the Knights 20-9 in the 2nd quarter to go up 32-23 at halftime.
Both teams scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score after three was 46-37 in favor of the Wolverines.
BRLD won the 4th quarter 20-16.
The Wolverines' Kenyan Lovejoy led all players with 29 points. Jaxon Johnson notched 11 while Lucas Vogt and Darwin Snyder tallied 9 and 7, respectively.
Head Coach Cory Meyer on the win. "We pushed the floor, the kids ran the floor well. We got a lay ups off it. And I got to give OC credit. I mean they wouldn't go away. They've got a lot of good players on their team. A lot of good shooters. And we might make two 2's and they might make a 3 and they're still in it. And Garrett had a great game for them. But I thought our defense stepped up and did pretty well overall. And pretty proud of our boys."
BRLD (13-1) hosts Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family (8-6) Friday night.
The Bulldogs lost 68-54 at home to Clearwater/Orchard this past Friday night.
HLHF has scuffled a bit as of late as they've dropped 4 out of their last 5.
The Wolverines have been decent in their last couple of games although I would say BRLD was playing better prior to the Mead game on Saturday.
At any rate, the Wolverines have won 8 in a row and are definitely on a roll.
I look for BRLD to pick up win number 9 in a row Friday night.
The Wolverines have this one with the Bulldogs on Friday, then Stanton on Saturday, and the big one with Winnebago on Tuesday.
East Husker Conference Tournament Seeding comes out on Monday so BRLD has to play well Friday and Saturday to earn the top seed in the Tournament perhaps.
The seedings are voted on by coaches so it's important for the Wolverines to do more than just win this weekend.
BRLD has to play at a very high level, and get up and down the floor, and run and gun HLHF and Stanton to death.
The Wolverines have to play hard and go at it full force no matter who is in the game.
BRLD has to really push to get the top seed in the tournament, and two big wins this weekend might be enough to get the job done.
The No. 1 seed probably comes down to Logan View/Scribner-Snyder and BRLD.
The Raiders are a great team, but so are the Wolverines.
I think BRLD can definitely play two great games this weekend and earn the top seed, but it won't be easy.
The thing the Wolverines can't do is get caught looking ahead to the Indians.
BRLD has to be focused on the task at hand, and has to take care of business on Friday and Saturday.
There's no reason to think the Wolverines won't win by at least 20 Friday night and have a running clock going on Saturday.
BRLD should be able to accomplish both of those things in those games one would think.
The BRLD Girls Basketball Team is also unbeaten in their last 3 games, topping Oakland-Craig 69-39 at home Friday night, Mead 68-26 on the road Saturday, and Wakefield 70-27 at home Tuesday night.
BRLD jumped out to a 19-6 lead on the Knights after one, and won the 2nd quarter 17-9 to take a 36-15 lead into the locker room.
The Wolverines outscored the Knights 20-9 in the 3rd quarter to go up 56-24 at the end of three.
Oakland-Craig won the 4th quarter 15-13.
Paige Peters had a game-high 20 points to lead the Wolverines while Vicki Gatzemeyer had 18, all in the 1st half. Sophia Henneman chipped in 12, and Mariah Petersen totaled 7.
Head Coach Rod Peters. "It was good balance. I was really worried because Coach Anderson does a really good job of coaching man-to-man defense. And you watch it. And they do such an excellent job of covering shooters. And we were able to get some shooters open, and just because you get some shooters open you still got to make the shot. I thought Vicki really did a nice job that first half being aggressive with the basketball. She had some tough looks inside. And Sophie, she's a great shooter, and when she gets on, she's really good. And the first half she was a little frustrated, she started passing the ball. Had a couple of turnovers. And I told her at halftime that next shot you shoot's going to go in, and I really believe that with her. She does a good job shooting."
The Wolverines led the Raiders 23-3 after one, and outscored Mead 24-17 in the 2nd quarter to take a 47-20 lead into the locker room.
BRLD won the 3rd quarter 13-4 to go up 60-24 at the end of three.
The Wolverines outscored the Raiders 8-2 in the 4th quarter.
BRLD led the Trojans 17-0 at the end of one, and outscored Wakefield 20-8 in the 2nd quarter to lead 37-8 at halftime.
The Wolverines outscored the Trojans 18-8 in the 3rd quarter to go up 55-16 at the end of three.
BRLD won the 4th quarter 15-11.
BRLD is playing great basketball at the moment, in my opinion. The last three wins have been very impressive to me.
The Wolverines (12-3) host Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family (13-2) Friday night.
The Bulldogs won 61-22 at home over Clearwater/Orchard this past Friday night.
This should be a great game between two very good teams.
Both teams are jockeying for East Husker Conference Tournament positioning so this one is absolutely critical for both teams, especially BRLD.
I think the Wolverines have to get both games this weekend to be able to earn a top 4 seed in the East Husker Conference Tournament.
Another loss and I think West Point-Beemer leapfrogs them provided that the Cadets don't lose this weekend themselves.
The Wolverines have to continue their hot play from recent games, and pour it on HLHF Friday night.
BRLD needs this one to give themselves a jolt and a boost heading into the Stanton game on Saturday.
The Wolverines have the Mustangs on the road so that doesn't figure to be an easy game at all.
Not that it would be even if BRLD was at home, but irregardless the Wolverines have to be ready to go this weekend.
We're slowly starting to get towards the end of the regular season believe it or not, and I think BRLD has a great chance to make state this year.
The Wolverines and Mustangs could very well meet in a District Final so this game with Stanton is big for multiple reasons.
The two teams could also play in the East Husker Conference Tournament so that figures to make things interesting as well.
BRLD is getting into some big time games and basketball with these games coming up so the Wolverines have to be ready to go.
I feel BRLD has made strides this season is a great team, now it's a matter of going out there and knocking off to very good teams in HLHF and Stanton.
Not easy by any means, but it can definitely be done, in my opinion.
