Winnebago Boys 3-1 in last four games; Girls 2-2 in same stretch

The Winnebago Boys Basketball Team went 2-1 at the Shootout on the Elkhorn Holiday Tournament in Wisner last week before downing Norfolk Catholic 59-49 on the road Tuesday night.

In the Shootout on the Elkhorn, the Indians beat Battle Creek in the opener on Thursday, 77-61.

In the semifinals on Friday, Winnebago downed Wisner-Pilger 88-61.

The Indians jumped on the Gators 26-6 at the end of one. Wisner-Pilger won the 2nd quarter 18-17 to make it a 43-24 game at halftime.

The Indians won the 3rd quarter 18-17 to push the lead back up to 20 at 61-41 at the end of three.

Winnebago outscored the Gators 27-20 in the 4th quarter.

Winnebago lost the championship game to Ponca on Saturday, falling 60-58.

Ponca went ahead 19-16 after one before Winnebago won the 2nd quarter 18-17 to make it a 36-34 game at halftime.

Winnebago outscored Ponca 16-14 in the 3rd quarter to tie the game at 50 at the end of three.

Ponca outscored Winnebago 10-8 in the 4th quarter.

The Indians led the Knights 12-8 after one. Winnebago won the 2nd quarter 16-12 to lead 28-20 at halftime.

Norfolk Catholic won the 3rd quarter 14-12 to make it a 40-34 game at the end of three.

The Indians outscored the Knights 19-15 in the 4th quarter.

I thought Winnebago played great against Battle Creek and Wisner-Pilger, especially considering the long layoff they had.

Ponca is the defending C-2 champ and seems to give Winnebago trouble.

I think the Indians could have been more dominant against Norfolk Catholic, but I'm sure Winnebago will gladly take the win.

The Indians (7-1) take on Dakota Valley, SD at the CNOS Classic in Sioux City Thursday night.

According to Maxpreps, Dakota Valley, SD is 5-1 on the season and won their last game 59-57 in overtime over Sergeant Bluff-Luton, IA.

Paul Brunes, Jack Graves, Brennan Moran, and Tanner Smith look to be some of the top players for the Panthers.

I don't know much about Dakota Valley, SD outside of that, but they should give Winnebago a tough game I would think.

The Indians can definitely win, but Winnebago has to get back to playing the type of basketball they were prior to the Ponca loss.

I look for the Indians to come out high flying and ready to go.

I imagine Winnebago will play uptempo and fast, and look to get out and run.

The Indians have been challenged in their last two games, and could very well be challenged in this one as well, but I think Winnebago stands a good chance to win.

The game is being played at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, and this figures to be good exposure and a good opportunity for the Indians.

Winnebago has to go out there and have fun and put on a show Thursday night.

The Indians have to be ready to go this week because they also play Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Friday.

Any disappointment still lingering from the Ponca game has to disappear because nothing can be done about that game now.

Winnebago will get a chance at revenge against Ponca at home later this month, but Winnebago has to put Saturday's loss behind them.

Winnebago is still a great team, and has to get back to playing the kind of basketball they were prior to the loss to Ponca.

Winnebago has to come ready to put on their best show and be ready to give a great effort for 4 quarters Thursday night.

A lot of people who probably don't get to see Winnebago play on a regular basis figure to get the opportunity to see the Indians first hand so it should be an exciting game and atmosphere for the players, coaches, and fans.

Tip-off is set for 9:00 p.m.

The Winnebago Girls lost 64-52 to Battle Creek in the 1st round of the Shootout on the Elkhorn Holiday Tournament in Wisner on Thursday before getting back on track with a 71-53 win over Neligh-Oakdale in a consolation game on Friday, and then defeating Lutheran High Northeast 59-45 in the 5th place game on Saturday. The Indians lost a tough one at Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night, falling 52-48 in overtime.

The Braves led 14-11 after one. Battle Creek won the 2nd quarter 18-12 to take a 32-23 lead into the locker room.

Winnebago crept closer in the 3rd, outscoring the Braves 18-13 to pull within 4 at 45-41 at the end of three.

Battle Creek had the final answer though as the Braves scored 19 points in the 4th quarter compared to 11 for the Indians.

Winnebago and Neligh-Oakdale were tied at 13 after one. The Indians outscored the Warriors 30-18 in the 2nd quarter to go up 43-31 at halftime.

Winnebago extended their lead to 19 by the end of the 3rd quarter as the Indians won the frame 15-8 to lead 58-39 heading into the final quarter.

Neligh-Oakdale won the 4th quarter 14-13.

The Indians held a 13-12 lead on the Eagles after one. Winnebago blanked Lutheran High Northeast 16-0 in the 2nd quarter to take a 29-12 lead into the locker room.

The Indians outscored the Eagles 14-9 to go up 43-21 at the end of three.

Lutheran High Northeast was 8 points better than Winnebago in the 4th quarter, outscoring the Indians 24-16.

Winnebago and the Knights were tied at 10 at the end of one. Norfolk Catholic won the 2nd quarter 11-9 to lead 21-19 at halftime.

The Indians dropped 12 in the 3rd quarter while the Knights countered with 11 to make the score 32-31 at the end of three in favor of Norfolk Catholic.

Winnebago won the 4th quarter 13-12 to tie the game at 44 and send it into overtime.

The Knights doubled up the Indians 8-4 in the extra session.

I thought Winnebago regained their good form against Neligh-Oakdale, and especially against LHNE.

The Indians (4-5) host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (4-7) Friday night.

The Bears lost 51-46 to Pender in the 7th place game of the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout in Wayne on Saturday.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge is a lot like Winnebago in that they're having a better season this year than in past years.

Both teams have done some nice things this year and are vastly improved, in my opinion.

Given the way the Bears performed in the Wayne Holiday Tournament and how the Indians have played lately, and the fact the game is in Winnebago, I have to give the edge and advantage to the Indians.

Winnebago has to come out ready to go and ready to play a great game Friday night.

The Indians have to get out and run and execute their offense at a high level.

Charli Earth, Kae Earth, Isabel Earth, and Jayla Price must have big games for Winnebago to be successful.

I feel the Indians have a great chance to pick up a big win, which would set the stage for Saturday's game in Sioux City against Dakota Valley, SD.

That game will be played at 10:30 a.m. at the Tyson Events Center so it will be a short night and a quick turnaround for Winnebago that's for sure.

Busy times for the Indians so Winnebago has to be sharp and ready to go Friday night and Saturday morning.

Like the boys, the game with Dakota Valley, SD is good exposure and a fun, unique, and neat opportunity for the Indians, in my opinion.

It's not everyday Winnebago gets to play in an Arena like the Tyson Events Center so the Indians have to make the most of the opportunity, and go in there and have fun.

Winnebago can't get too hyped up about it prior to Saturday though because the Indians still have a game against Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Friday night.

So as difficult as it is, Winnebago has to be focused on the Bears and then turn their attention and excitement to Saturday's game.

I think it's key for the Indians to contain and hold back their excitement until after Friday night's game if there's some sort of excitement for Saturday's game at all, which I would think there would be.
