Emerson-Hubbard Boys go 0-2 at Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament; Girls finish 2nd
The Emerson-Hubbard Boys Basketball Team is 0-2 in their last two contests, falling 72-33 to Wakefield in the 1st round of the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament in Wakefield Friday night, and losing 41-36 to Pender in the 3rd place game on Saturday.
The Pirates jumped out to a 15-7 lead on the Pendragons at the end of one before winning the 2nd quarter 10-4 to take a 25-11 lead into the locker room.
Pender outscored Emerson-Hubbard 13-7 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 32-24 game at the end of three.
The Pendragons outscored the Pirates 17-4 in the 4th quarter.
I think Emerson-Hubbard had to be encouraged by how they played in the 1st half against Pender. The Pirates couldn't quite close things out though unfortunately.
Emerson-Hubbard (1-10) travels to Winnebago (9-1) to take on the Indians Tuesday night.
Winnebago handed Laurel-Concord-Coleridge an 80-53 loss in Winnebago Friday night.
The Indians figure to be ready in this one as well. I look for Winnebago to put on a show against the Pirates.
It figures to be very difficult for Emerson-Hubbard to keep this one close.
This game will most likely be a 40-point running clock at the same point in the 2nd half, unfortunately.
That's not a knock on the Pirates, but the Indians had a running clock against Oakland-Craig two minutes or so into the 3rd quarter.
Emerson-Hubbard simply has to use this game as a building block and springboard into better things.
The Pirates have games that all figure to be challenging for them after this one so Emerson-Hubbard has to play their best and do whatever good things they can to build for the rest of the season.
The Pirates have to try and slow down D'Von LaPointe, Manape Cleveland, Lance Denney, Makoonce Littlevoice, T.J. Frenchman, and others.
Easier said than done though given how good these players are.
I look for the Indians to score in the 90's or 100's in this game.
I don't know how much scoring Emerson-Hubbard will do, but if the Pirates can get over 50 points I think that would be a huge and tremendous accomplishment.
Emerson-Hubbard has to come ready to play, and has to play with tremendous pride, passion, toughness, tenacity, grit, fight, and might Tuesday night.
The Pirates can't back down from, and can't be scared of or intimidated by Winnebago.
It would be so easy to be in awe or get caught in how great the Indians are, but Emerson-Hubbard still has to go out there and play a game, and play it hard and the right way.
The Pirates must handle Winnebago's full court pressure if they are to have any shot in this game.
Smart passes and good floor spacing, plus knowing press break offenses and things of that sort, will be the key to doing that, in my opinion.
I feel rebounding will be critical as well. Emerson-Hubbard has to force the Indians to be one and done offensively.
The Emerson-Hubbard Girls Basketball Team took 2nd place at the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament last week, defeating Wakefield 43-40 in the 1st game in Wakefield Thursday night, before losing 54-49 in the championship game to Pender on Saturday.
The Pirates got out to a 13-2 lead on the Trojans at the end of one. Wakefield won the 2nd quarter 10-8 to make it a 21-12 game at halftime.
Emerson-Hubbard won the 3rd quarter 10-9 to extend their lead to 10 at 31-21 at the end of three.
The Trojans outscored the Pirates 19-12 in the 4th quarter.
Melanie Gentrup had 18 points while Courtney Bokemper totaled 14. Taylor Lamp pulled down 10 rebounds while Addison Mackling had 7.
The Pirates jumped out to a 16-5 lead on the Pendragons at the end of one. Pender doubled up Emerson-Hubbard 18-9 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 25-23 game at halftime.
The Pendragons doubled up the Pirates 20-10 in the 3rd quarter to lead 43-35 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard won the 4th quarter 14-11.
Bokemper had 12 points and 7 rebounds while Gentrup totaled 12 points. Lamp and Stephanie Ferrusca added 8 points apiece while Mackling tallied 7.
That's the kind of scoring the Pirates need from here on out. I thought Emerson-Hubbard played championship basketball this past weekend despite the loss.
The Pirates (3-8) travel to Winnebago (5-6) to take on the Indians Tuesday night.
Winnebago lost 76-70 to Dakota Valley, SD at the CNOS Classic at Sioux City's Tyson Events Center on Saturday.
The Indians are a much improved team over last year, and this figures to be a really difficult game for Emerson-Hubbard given Winnebago's improvement and the fact they're a C-1 school.
This is a big game for the Pirates in terms of power points though as they figure to get quite a few points win or lose.
Emerson-Hubbard needs the same kind of effort offensively they got against Pender.
The Pirates will also need to be stronger defensively than they were against the Pendragons.
Emerson-Hubbard has to try and contain, or least try and slow down Charli Earth, Kae Earth, Isabel Earth, Jayla Price, and others.
Those 4 lead the Indians, and are Winnebago's best players and scorers, in my opinion.
The Pirates have to play their hearts out and leave it all out on the floor.
Chances are the Indians are going to win, but who knows, Emerson-Hubbard might play well and surprise some people in this one.
I think the Pirates have a chance to be competitive in and keep this one close.
I feel Emerson-Hubbard played their best basketball in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament, and I look for the Pirates to build off their efforts from that tournament Tuesday night.
Emerson-Hubbard has to be smart and stay out of foul trouble given the fact they only have 7 players on the roster.
The Pirates have to dig deep, and find the energy necessary to compete well and play a good game.
Winnebago definitely has the upper hand when it comes to depth as the Indians have a good number of players who come off the bench and contribute as well.
I feel Winnebago's depth may ultimately wear down Emerson-Hubbard, but we will see.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
The Pirates have to use that line as motivation, and come out and play as well and hard as possible Tuesday night.
