Pender Boys beat Homer, lose to Omaha Nation; Girls beat Knights
The Pender Boys Basketball Team won 50-42 at Homer last Tuesday night before falling 66-64 at Omaha Nation Thursday night.
Pender rallied from a 21-8 deficit by going on a 15-0 late in the first half. They finished the first
half on a 16-4 run to trail 25-24 at halftime before taking the lead for good shortly after the second half began.
Sam Mailoux led the Pendragons with 21 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Jaydon Jump added a double-double of his own, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Jared Tyrell put in 8 points.
The Chiefs led Pender 20-16 after one. Omaha Nation won the 2nd quarter 17-15 to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room.
The Pendragons outscored the Chiefs 18-13 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 50-49 game at the end of three.
Omaha Nation won the 4th quarter 16-15.
Mailoux had 30 points and 19 rebounds for Pender, good enough for a double-double. Tyler Nelson added 11 points while Jump scored 10 points and pulled down 9 boards. Tyrell added 10 points.
I thought the Pendragons played well last week, and got back to the form they were playing at earlier in the season.
Pender (6-8) hosts Wisner-Pilger (10-4) Thursday night.
The Gators lost 58-48 at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday.
Wisner-Pilger is a solid team, and has a nice mixture of younger and older players.
Rockney Peck and Tyler McBride are a couple of freshmen that have emerged for the Gators.
Peck had 21 points and McBride added 12 in the loss to the Raiders.
Combine them with Gunner Labenz, Keegan Ruskamp, Jayden Raabe, and Hunter Waterman, and you have a pretty darn good team.
The Pendragons have some kids that can play too though.
Mailoux has been nothing short of incredible, and Jump, Nelson, and Tyrell have also proven to be solid contributors.
I look for Pender to play a good game and turn in a solid performance Thursday night.
This is a big week for the Pendragons with Wisner-Pilger on Thursday, Wynot on Friday, and Howells-Dodge on Saturday.
Three games against three good teams and quality opponents.
These games will definitely test Pender there's no doubt about it.
As the say though when the going gets tough the tough gets going, and that's a motto the Pendragons have to use this week.
The good news for Pender is they will have had an entire week to get ready and prepare for the Gators, and so that should be to their benefit.
This is a big game for the Pendragons with Pender jockeying for position in the East Husker Conference Tournament.
I don't know what kind of seed the Pendragons are going to get, but if the Pendragons can do well this week I would think they would have a chance to get a good first round matchup.
Pender has to step up their game and play well this week. The Pendragons have to raise their level of play, and play up to their competition.
Pender has to match each opponent's intensity, and be ready to bring it each night.
The Pender Girls Basketball team beat Homer 61-54 on the road last Tuesday night.
The two teams were tied at 16 after one, and both scored 13 points in the 2nd quarter to make it a 29-all game at halftime.
The Pendragons outscored the Knights 17-10 in the 3rd quarter to lead 46-39 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 15 points in the 4th quarter.
Faith Morris led the 7-8 Lady Dragons with 21 points, 15 of those coming from behind the three-point line. Sarah Krueger added 15 and Ashley Ostrand hit for 14 points.
The win was Pender's fourth in a row after losing seven in a row between December 14th and December 28th.
The Pendragons (7-8) look to keep the ball rolling Thursday night when they host Wisner-Pilger (5-10).
The Gators won 56-48 in overtime at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Wisner-Pilger.
The Gators have a great player in Jordan Wegner, and other solid contributors like Maci Batenhorst, Ariel Meyer, Ashton Meyer, Aspin Waterman, and Karrin Jindra.
Wisner-Pilger isn't a bad team at all, in my opinion, and this figures to be a challenging game for Pender.
The Pendragons can definitely win though, in my opinion, there's no doubt about it.
I look for Pender to win this one actually.
I feel the way the Pendragons have been playing lately will get them over the top and propel them to victory.
Morris, Krueger, and Ostrand played very well on offense for Pender last Tuesday night, and I look for those three, along with maybe Michaela Wegner if she plays, to have big games for the Pendragons.
Pender has picked up their play lately and gotten back on track, in my opinion, and it has been good to see.
I think the Pendragons are a very solid team this year, and have a chance to get to 10+ wins before the East Husker Conference Tournament.
Pender has Thursday's game against Wisner-Pilger, Friday against Wynot, and Saturday against Howells-Dodge, plus two more games next week.
Definitely no easy task playing back-to-back-to back nights, but all the Pendragons can do is play the hand they are dealt.
The good news for Pender is they will have had over a week off to get ready for the three game gauntlet so the Pendragons should be fresh and ready to go.
I look for Pender to come out motivated and determined, and ready to take it to the Gators and the other two opponents for 4 quarters this week.
I think a win over Wisner-Pilger would sort of set the tone for the week, and allow the Pendragons to play better the next two nights than if they lost to the Gators.
