The Emerson-Hubbard Boys Basketball Team is 1-2 in their last three contests, falling 57-48 at home to Winside last Thursday night, and 57-43 to Burwell in the 1st round of the Madison Holiday Tournament on Friday, before beating Elgin Public/Pope John 47-40 in the consolation game on Saturday.
The Wildcats led the Pirates 9-5 at the end of one. Emerson-Hubbard won the 2nd quarter 10-9 to make it an 18-15 game at halftime.
Winside outscored the Pirates 17-13 in the 3rd quarter to lead 35-28 at the end of three.
The Wildcats notched 22 points in the 4th quarter compared to 20 for Emerson-Hubbard.
Joshua Sebade had 15 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Jacob Kneifl added 14 points while Nolan Belt scored 9.
The Longhorns led 21-15 after one. The Pirates won the 2nd quarter 12-10 to make it a 31-27 game at halftime.

The Pirates outscored the Wolfpack 20-13 in the 3rd quarter to tie the game at 29 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard put up 18 points in the 4th quarter compared to 11 for Elgin Public/Pope John.
Blake Eriksen had 14 points while Chandler Emmons notched 10 points and 8 rebounds. Kneifl registered 7 points and 8 rebounds while Sebade and Burcham registered 13 and 12, respectively.
I thought the Pirates played a great 2nd half against the Wolfpack. Emerson-Hubbard is starting to play better and come around some it appears.
The Pirates (1-8) battle Wakefield (6-4) in the 1st round of the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament in Wakefield Friday night.
The Trojans beat Neligh-Oakdale 57-46 in the 7th place game of the Shootout on the Elkhorn on Saturday.
Wakefield is a good team, and so beating them on their home floor will be no easy or small task.
Almost all of the Trojans' losses are to teams with records well above .500, but that's not to say Emerson-Hubbard can't compete and win.
I think the Pirates have played better basketball the last three games, and I look for them to build on the win over Elgin Public/Pope John, and play even better basketball Friday night.
I don't know if Emerson-Hubbard will beat Wakefield on the Trojans' home floor, but I think the Pirates have an opportunity to give Wakefield a scare and be competitive.
Emerson-Hubbard's players have put up better scoring and rebounding stats as of late, and that has to continue.
The Pirates have to remain upbeat, positive, and motivated.
Emerson-Hubbard has a chance to at least pick up another win in this Post Holiday Tournament, in my opinion, but the Pirates have to continue to play the way they have over the last few games.
Emerson-Hubbard has to continue to build on the positive and good things they have done lately, and must put themselves in a position to make a run in the 2nd half of the season.
I think the Pirates have a great chance to win some games this month and in February, and Emerson-Hubbard has to do their best to continue to push forward and win games, and make a push in the Lewis and Clark and Sub-District Tournaments.
There's a lot of season left, and it appears the Pirates have caught fire just a little bit.
Emerson-Hubbard has a ways to go, but the Pirates have to be encouraged by their recent play.
Now it's a matter of continuing to raise their level of play and keep playing at a high level if you are Emerson-Hubbard.
The Pirates have to come out and the Trojans in the mouth and make a statement early on.
Emerson-Hubbard has to show Wakefield that they've come to play, and that they are there to win.
The Pirates have to play to win and not play not to lose.
The Emerson-Hubbard Girls Basketball Team is also 1-2 in their last three games, defeating Winside 58-11 at home last Thursday night, and then losing 56-30 to Burwell in the 1st round of the Madison Holiday Tournament on Friday, and 43-38 to the host Dragons in Saturday's consolation game.
The Pirates blanked the Wildcats 12-0 in the 1st quarter. Emerson-Hubbard outscored Winside 15-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 27-2 lead into the locker room.
The Pirates won the 3rd quarter 22-7 to lead 49-9 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard put up 9 points in the 4th quarter and held the Wildcats to 2.
Melanie Gentrup notched 21 points and 8 rebounds while Courtney Bokemper totaled 17 points and 14 rebounds. Addison Mackling added 8 points.
The Longhorns got out to an 11-5 lead at the end of one. Burwell outscored the Pirates 18-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 29-13 lead into the locker room.
The Longhorns won the 3rd quarter 17-13 to go up 46-26 at the end of three.
Burwell put up 10 points in the 4th quarter compared to 4 for Emerson-Hubbard.
Gentrup led the way with 17 points.
The Dragons doubled up the Pirates 10-5 in the 1st quarter. Emerson-Hubbard won the 2nd quarter 12-9 to make it a 19-17 game at halftime.
Madison outscored the Pirates 15-8 in the 3rd quarter to lead 34-25 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard notched 13 points in the 4th quarter compared to 9 for the Dragons.
Gentrup notched 17 points and 8 rebounds while Bokemper totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double.
I thought the Pirates played well against Winside and Madison. The Burwell game was tough though.
Emerson-Hubbard (2-7) takes on Wakefield (3-7) in the 1st round of the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament in Wakefield Thursday night.
The Trojans beat Neligh-Oakdale 50-39 in the 7th place game of the Shootout on the Elkhorn on Saturday.
Wakefield is a decent team, but I think the Pirates have a chance to compete well in and win this game.
I look for Emerson-Hubbard to hold their own and put forth a great effort Thursday night.
I look for Bokemper, Gentrup, Mackling, and others to play well and have big games for the Pirates.
Emerson-Hubbard needs to continue to get big production from Bokemper and Gentrup on both ends of the floor.
Those two are the glue to this team, and it's hard telling where the Pirates would be without them.
Emerson-Hubbard has to keep playing the way they did against the Wildcats and Dragons, and keep growing and improving as much as possible.
I think the Pirates have a good chance to win a game or two in this Tournament, and other games down the line this season.
Emerson-Hubbard has to keep playing with heart, passion, desire, fire, tenacity, mental and physical toughness, and grit.
With only 7 players on the roster right now the Pirates have to get the most out of themselves and stay as fresh as possible.
Everybody has to be ready to play and contribute as I'm sure every player sees playing time for Emerson-Hubbard.
The Pirates are very low on numbers, and that makes things tough, especially in practice, but Emerson-Hubbard has to make the best of the situation.
The Pirates must be ready to play come Thursday night. Hopefully practice has gone well because Emerson-Hubbard needs to be as well prepared as possible.
The Pirates have to play hard and leave everything out on the floor Thursday night.
Emerson-Hubbard has to give it their all, and make sure they do everything in their power to come away with the win.
The Pirates have to do their best to make sure they do everything possible to win the game.
