Stanton Boys 1-2 in last three games; Girls 2-1 in same span

The Stanton Boys Basketball Team is 1-2 in their last three contests, falling 60-30 at Oakland-Craig Friday night, and 68-24 at home to Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday, before winning 49-47 at home against Plainview Tuesday night.

The Knights doubled up the Mustangs 16-8 in the 1st quarter and outscored them 21-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 37-16 lead into the locker room.

Oakland-Craig outscored Stanton 22-10 in the 3rd quarter to go up 59-26 at the end of three.

The Mustangs won the 4th quarter 4-1.

Nate Arens had 8 points and 10 rebounds to lead Stanton. Beau Wilke and Marcus Spotanski added 7 rebounds apiece.

The Raiders led the Mustangs 21-2 after one and outscored Stanton 22-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 43-10 lead into the locker room.

LVSS outscored the Mustangs 17-9 in the 3rd quarter to go up 60-19 at the end of three.

The Raiders won the 4th quarter 8-5.

Broderick Sieh had a team-high 8 points for Stanton.

It had to feel really good for the Mustangs to pick up their 2nd win of the year. I thought Stanton did a nice job beating the Pirates.

The Mustangs (2-11) travel to Boone Central/Newman Grove (7-4) Friday night.

The Cardinals are coming off a 56-55 home loss to Wayne on Saturday.

BC/NG appears to be a pretty solid team with all their losses coming to high quality teams.

With that said, the Cardinals haven't been super dominant in their wins, and I think Stanton has a chance to make this one close and interesting.

After all, the Mustangs are coming off a win while BC/NG is coming off back-to-back losses.

I'm not saying Stanton is going to win, I'm just saying I think the Mustangs are catching the Cardinals at as good a time as any.

Stanton has a handful of games they can win after this weekend, in my opinion, so if the Mustangs can at least compete this weekend against BC/NG and Battle Creek I think it could go a long ways in Stanton being successful down the line.

I think it would be asking a lot out of the Mustangs to win twice or even once this weekend, but anything is certainly possible and can happen.

Stanton has to play with confidence, and has to play well on offense and defense like I think they did against Plainvie though.

The offense is going to need to be even better this weekend, and the defense probably could be raised up a few levels as well, but if the Mustangs can raise their level of play there's no telling what can happen.

I think Stanton has what it takes to have two good showings this weekend.

I truly believe there are moral victories to be had if the Mustangs can't come out on top.

Stanton should still try and win of course, that's the ultimate goal, but if the Mustangs don't win then I'm sure they will find positive things to take away from the loss or losses.

Stanton has to play hard and with drive, hunger, and determination, and has to be tenacious, gritty, passionate, and prideful.

The Mustangs have to give it their all and play for their school, for each other, and for Mustang Pride.

Stanton has to work well and gel together as a team to achieve the common goal of winning basketball games.

The Mustangs have to get after it this weekend like they haven't gotten after it before.

The Stanton Girls Basketball Team lost 36-30 at Oakland-Craig Friday night, beat Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 48-26 at home on Saturday, and downed Plainview 67-31 at home Tuesday night.

The Knights led 10-6 after one before the Mustangs outscored them 9-3 in the 2nd quarter to take a 15-13 lead into the locker room.

Oakland-Craig outscored Stanton 11-3 in the 3rd quarter to go up 24-18 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 12 points in the 4th quarter.

Jessie Brandl had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds while Bree Burtwhistle chipped in 8 points.

The Mustangs held a 16-5 lead on the Raiders at the end of one. Stanton outscored LVSS 15-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 31-12 lead into the locker room.

The Mustangs won the 3rd quarter 11-2 to go up 42-14 at the end of three.

The Raiders doubled up Stanton 12-6 in the 4th quarter.

Hannah Heppner finished with a game-high 15 points while Jaiden Hartl notched 12. Burtwhistle added 11 while Brandl had 7 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mustangs held a 10-4 lead on the Pirates after one, and outscored Plainview 17-9 in the 2nd quarter to go up 27-13 at halftime.

Stanton won the 3rd quarter 16-6 to lead 43-19 at the end of three.

The Mustangs doubled up the Pirates 24-12 in the 4th quarter.

Brandl had a game-high 12 points while Heppner posted 10. Hartl added 9 while Liz Christensen and Burtwhistle notched 8 and 7, respectively.

Despite the loss to the Knights, I feel Stanton is still playing really good basketball right now.

The Mustangs (12-1) take on Boone Central/Newman Grove (2-9) on the road Friday night.

The Cardinals lost 62-39 at home to Wayne on Saturday to push their losing streak up to 4 games.

This should be an easy win for Stanton.

Both games this weekend shouldn't be too difficult for the Mustangs to win.

Stanton figures to be challenged big time right before and after the East Husker Conference Tournament so the Mustangs need to take care of business these next three games to put themselves in a good position to succeed the rest of the regular season.

Stanton also has Madison on Tuesday, and has to fine tune anything that needs to be worked on and iron out any kinks in the armor.

The home stretch is about to hit the Mustangs, and Stanton has to keep playing the way they have pretty much all season long, and continue to dominate.

The Mustangs had a minor setback against Oakland-Craig and I felt it lingered over to the LVSS game in a way, but Stanton appeared to have figured things out and gotten back on track with the win over Plainview.

I think the Mustangs are a great team, and have an opportunity to make a state run this year, but Stanton has to keep their eye on the prize and continue to impress.

These next few games and the BRLD and maybe even the Twin River game are very big for the Mustangs from the standpoint of East Husker Conference Tournament seeding.

Stanton is one of the top teams in the conference no doubt, and should get a very high seed for the tournament, if not the No. 1 seed.

Brandl, Burtwhistle, Heppner, Christensen, and Hartl all need to keep playing well for the Mustangs.

The balanced scoring Stanton got against the Raiders and Pirates was key and big, in my opinion.

I feel the Mustangs will need to continue to get balanced scoring to be successful.

Stanton has to keep pressing forward and working hard, and has to keep their foot on the petal.

The Mustangs have to remember what happened at the end of last year, and make sure they do everything in their power to not let history repeat itself.

The bottomline in any game you play is to win, but Stanton has to impress in and win their next three games big.
