Howells-Dodge 1-1 in last two games; Girls 1-2 in last three
The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team went 1-1 last week, losing 64-56 at Humphrey St. Francis Friday night before beating Plainview 59-29 at home on Saturday.
The Flyers led 14-9 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 15-14 to take a 29-23 lead into the locker room.
Both teams scored 12 3rd quarter points, and the score after three was 41-35 in favor of Humphrey St. Francis.
The Flyers outscored the Jaguars 23-21 in the 4th quarter.
Josh Brester led the way with 19 points while Connor Blum and Dax VanLengen totaled 11 each. Kade Hegemann chipped in 7 points while Lane Hegemann recorded 8 rebounds.
Howells-Dodge led the Pirates 13-11 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 9-4 to go up 22-15 at halftime.
The Jaguars outscored Plainview 22-9 in the 3rd quarter to lead 44-24 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge tripled up the Pirates 15-5 in the 4th quarter.
Blum had 15 points while Lane Hegemann registered 13 points and 8 rebounds.
Head Coach Cole Fischer says the final 16 minutes were good for the Jaguars. "We played well in second half to get back on track."
Howells-Dodge (8-6) travels to Wisner to take on Wisner-Pilger (9-3) Friday night.
The Gators won 63-41 at Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Tuesday night.
Wisner-Pilger is a good team, and has been on a roll all season long.
The Gators have been more consistent than the Jaguars to this point in the season though you could say.
I feel Howells-Dodge has a lot of potential though.
The Jaguars have been great at times this year, it's just they've lost to some really good teams.
If Howells-Dodge can get an effort like they got against Hartington Cedar Catholic and West Point-Beemer then they could very well win.
It won't be easy, but the Jaguars are definitely capable of going on the road and beating Wisner-Pilger, in my opinion.
It all starts on the defensive end for Howells-Dodge, and the Jaguars have to do a good job of defending Gunner Labenz, Hunter Waterman, Jayden Raabe, and Keegan Ruskamp, among others.
It should be a great battle down low between Lane Hegemann and Raabe.
This is a big game as these two teams could very well meet again in the East Husker Conference Tournament and in Sub-Districts.
I look for Blum, Lane Hegemann, VanLengen, and Brester to have big games for Howells-Dodge.
The Jaguars had a lot of good scoring against the Flyers, it was just defense that let them down, in my opinion.
Howells-Dodge has been good on offense this year, especially lately, so if the Jaguars can defend well then they could very well win.
I think defense is the key in this one for both teams.
The Gators have been very good offensively and solid defensively too so this should be a good one.
I feel Wisner-Pilger has been a little bit better offensively and defensively than Howells-Dodge, but that doesn't mean the Jaguars can't win.
This is a big one for Howells-Dodge with the Jaguars jockeying for position in the East Husker Conference Tournament.
The Howells-Dodge Girls Basketball Team is 1-2 in their last two contests, falling 60-44 at Humphrey St. Francis Friday night, beating Plainview 52-20 at home on Saturday, and losing 39-30 at home to Lutheran High Northeast Tuesday night.
The Flyers got out to a 27-12 lead on the Jaguars after one before Howells-Dodge won the 2nd quarter 10-7 to make it a 34-22 game at halftime.
Humphrey St. Francis won the 3rd quarter 16-15 to lead 50-37 at the end of three.
The Flyers outscored the Jaguars 10-7 in the 4th quarter.
Erin Prusa had 8 points and 8 rebounds while Madyson Cech totaled 8 points. Jessi Brester notched 7 points and 8 rebounds while Cassie Pieper chipped in 7 points.
Howells-Dodge led the Pirates 15-3 at the end of one and won the 2nd quarter 8-6 to go up 23-9 at halftime.
The Jaguars doubled up Plainview 14-7 in the 3rd quarter to lead 37-16 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge outscored the Pirates 15-4 in the 4th quarter.
Prusa had a game-high 16 points while Grace Dvorak added 10 points and 9 rebounds.
The Jaguars held a 10-8 advantage on the Eagles after one. LHNE won the 2nd quarter 11-10 to make it a 20-19 game at halftime.
The Eagles outscored Howells-Dodge 11-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 30-25 at the end of three.
LHNE won the 4th quarter 9-5.
Cech and Macey Kulhanek had 7 points apiece to lead the Jaguars.
The loss to the Eagles had to hurt. I'm sure that's a game Howells-Dodge really thought and was hoping they would get.
The Jaguars (6-7) take on Wisner-Pilger (4-9) on the road Friday night.
The Gators lost 56-42 at Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family Tuesday night, and have lost 4 out of their last 5.
Jordan Wegner is a very good player for Wisner-Pilger, and I think it's critical for Howells-Dodge to try and contain and limit her as much as possible.
The Gators also have Aspin Waterman, Karrin Jindra, Maci Batenhorst, Ariel Meyer, Ashton Meyer, and others so the Jaguars have to be wary of them too.
This should be a good game, and I feel Howells-Dodge will come out and play well, and perhaps find a way to win.
I think the Jaguars will be upset and motivated by the fact they lost to LHNE.
Howells-Dodge has to come out fired up, and ready and raring to go.
The Jaguars have to get Kulhanek, Prusa, Brester, Cech, and Pieper all going at the same time.
This is a big weekend for Howells-Dodge with a home game against Columbus Scotus on Saturday so the Jaguars have to come out and play well Friday night.
Howells-Dodge has to overcome their inconsistent play the best they can, and press forward and play at a high level Friday night.
The Jaguars have to want it, and must have the drive and desire to be successful.
Howells-Dodge has to play at as high a level as possible, and bring it for 4 quarters.
Both teams have been struggling lately, and could really use a win.
The Jaguars have lost 3 out of their last 4, but the Gators could probably use this one more.
I'm sure Howells-Dodge would love nothing more than to add to Wisner-Pilger's woes though.
To win, the Jaguars have to come out and play smart and aggressive offense and defense, and must playing the passing lanes well as well as get up and down the floor well.
Howells-Dodge has to be confident shooting the ball, and has to work the rock around the perimeter and inside for good shots.
The Jaguars have to also box out and rebound well as well as play tight, in your face, pressure defense, and really get after things on the defensive end of the floor as well as the offensive end.
