Stanton Boys 0-3 in last three games; Girls unbeaten in same stretch
The Stanton Boys Basketball Team is 0-3 in their last three games, falling 67-36 at Boone Central/Newman Grove last Friday night, 42-37 at home to Battle Creek on Saturday, and 44-38 at Madison Tuesday night.
The Cardinals held a 17-11 lead on the Mustangs after one, and won the 2nd quarter 12-11 to go up 29-22 at halftime.
BC/NG outscored Stanton 19-8 in the 3rd quarter to lead 48-30 at the end of three.
The Cardinals outscored the Mustangs 19-6 in the 4th quarter.
Beau Wilke paced Stanton with 9 points while Broderick Sieh scored 7.
The Braves led 15-8 after one before the Mustangs won the 2nd quarter 12-10 to make it a 25-20 game at halftime.
Both teams scored 6 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score after three was 31-26 in favor of Battle Creek.
Both teams scored 11 points in the 4th quarter.
TJ Larson had a team-high 12 points while Sieh and Wilke totaled 8 and 7, respectively.
Stanton led the Dragons 7-6 after one before Madsion outscored the Mustangs 13-5 in the 2nd quarter to go in front 19-12 at halftime.
The Dragons won the 3rd quarter 9-4 to lead 28-16 at the end of three.
Stanton outscored Madison 22-16 in the 4th quarter.
Wilke had 12 points and 8 rebounds while Nate Arens chipped in 8 points and 13 rebounds. Sieh added 8 points while Marcus Spotanski registered 7 rebounds.
Defense has been strong for the Mustangs the last couple of games, but offense has been a struggle you could say.
Stanton (2-14) hosts BRLD (13-1) on Saturday.
The Wolverines won 56-45 at home over Wakefield Tuesday night.
BRLD appears to be legit and the real deal yet again this year, and the Mustangs have to do everything in their power to compete and make things close.
Stanton has to play strong basketball offensively and defensively to have a chance in this one.
I look for the Mustangs to give it their all in this one, and do everything in their power to win.
I don't know if Stanton will come away with the W, but I think the Mustangs have a chance to improve on their play from the last two games.
If Stanton can get their offense going and play the same kind of defense they did against Battle Creek and Madison then things could get very interesting.
I feel the Mustangs will have a good showing and play a strong game, and keep things closer than a lot might expect.
Stanton should be able to keep things reasonably respectable given how both teams have fared in recent games.
BRLD could very well play a great game though given the fact they're jockeying for a No. 1 seed in the East Husker Conference Tournament.
I think the Mustangs have a chance to win some games after this one with the Wolverines so if Stanton can at least keep things close it could lead to wins in the future, in my opinion.
Wilke, Sieh, Arens, and Larson all need to play well for the Mustangs on Saturday and beyond.
I think Stanton has a great chance to be successful on Saturday and in these final regular season games if they can keep improving and figuring out the offense.
If the Mustangs can reach the 40-point plateau against BRLD I think that would be a huge step in the right direction for them.
Stanton has to keep working hard and shooting the ball well.
The more shots and work the Mustangs put in the stronger they will be.
Stanton has to try and slow down the likes of Kenyan Lovejoy, Darwin Snyder, Lucas Vogt, Trent Gatewood, and others.
The Stanton Girls Basketball Team is 3-0 in their last three games, topping Boone Central/Newman Grove 46-37 on the road last Friday night, Battle Creek 36-23 at home on Saturday, and 57-31 at Madison Tuesday night.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 13-6 lead on the Cardinals at the end of one. Both teams scored 12 points in the 2nd quarter, and the halftime score was 25-18 in favor of Stanton.
The Mustangs won the 3rd quarter 10-9 to go up 35-27 at the end of three.
Stanton won the 4th quarter 11-10.
Jessie Brandl had 16 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Jaiden Hartl added 16 points while Bree Burtwhistle had 8 points. Hannah Heppner added 8 rebounds.
The Mustangs held a 5-3 lead on the Braves at the end of one. Both teams scored 4 points in the 2nd quarter, and the score was 9-7 at halftime in favor of Stanton.
The Mustangs won the 3rd quarter 10-8 to go up 19-15 at the end of three.
Stanton outscored Battle Creek 17-8 in the 4th quarter.
Burtwhistle posted 15 points while Hartl and Brandl notched 9 and 8, respectively. Heppner totaled 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs led the Dragons 21-9 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 5-4 to take a 26-13 lead into the locker room.
Stanton outscored Madison 18-11 in the 3rd quarter to lead 44-24 at the end of three.
The Mustangs outscored the Dragons 13-7 in the 4th quarter.
Great game by Stanton against Madison. Respectable games against Battle Creek and BC/NG as well.
The Mustangs (15-1) host BRLD (12-3) on Saturday.
The Wolverines won 70-27 at home over Wakefield Tuesday night.
BRLD is a very good, explosive team, but I feel Stanton matches up well against them.
Stanton is a very strong defensive team much like West Point-Beemer, who beat the Wolverines 45-37.
I think the Mustangs can take a page out of the Cadets' book and do some of the same things West Point-Beemer did against BRLD.
Stanton has to try and slow down Vicki Gatzemeyer, Paige Peters, Mariah Petersen, Tiahna Bonneau, Kelsey Larsen, and others.
The Mustangs have to be tough, tenacious, and aggressive defensively, and suffocate the Wolverines.
Brandl, Burtwhistle, Heppner, and Hartl all need to turn in very strong performances offensively for Stanton.
These 4 are relied upon a lot to score, and need to step up and deliver for the Mustangs.
I don't think there's any doubt defense is going to decide this game though.
I feel defense is what is going to need to carry Stanton to victory.
The Mustangs aren't the strongest offensive team, but their defense is top notch, and I think it could be good enough to beat BRLD.
The Wolverines are good and figure to pose a tough threat though so Stanton has to be ready.
This game is huge for the Mustangs in that they could perhaps lock up the No. 1 seed in the East Husker Conference Tournament with a win, if they don't have it already.
We're getting to a key juncture and big and critical part of Stanton's schedule so the Mustangs have to keep playing well and at a high level.
Now is not the time to go into a slump.
Stanton has to keep their foot on the petal, and keep on chugging along.
The Mustangs have to keep their eye on the prize and think big.
Stanton has to be thinking win the conference tournament, sub-districts, districts, and state championships, but has to keep it all in perspective at the same time.
