Pender Boys take 3rd in Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament; Girls win it
The Pender Boys Basketball Team lost 60-51 to Homer in their first game of the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament in Wakefield Friday night before winning 41-36 over Emerson-Hubbard in the 3rd place game on Saturday.
The Homer game saw the Pendragons get out to a 13-9 lead after one, and outscore the Knights 15-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 28-17 lead into the locker room.
Homer came out and outscored Pender 18-2 in the 3rd quarter to go up on top 35-30 at the end of three.
The Knights won the 4th quarter 25-21.
The Pirates jumped out to a 15-7 lead on the Pendragons at the end of one before winning the 2nd quarter 10-4 to take a 25-11 lead into the locker room.
Pender outscored Emerson-Hubbard 13-7 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 32-24 game at the end of three.
The Pendragons outscored the Pirates 17-4 in the 4th quarter.
Both games were a tale of two halfs for Pender. The Pendragons played well in the 1st half against the Knights, and well in the 2nd half against Emerson-Hubbard.
Pender (5-7) takes on Homer (4-8) again on the road Tuesday night.
The Knights lost 63-48 to the host Trojans in Saturday's Championship Game.
If memory serves me correct, the Pendragons beat Homer two years ago right after losing to them.
Pender knocked off the Knights last year too so there's no doubt the Pendragons can beat Homer this time around this year.
Pender has to play a complete game to come away with the win though.
The Pendragons can't afford to play a poor second half again or they could very well lose.
The 3rd quarter ultimately cost Pender on Friday, and the Pendragons just have to realize that one bad quarter or bad half can and will cost them a game.
Pender also can't afford to get behind in this one like they did against the Pirates.
The Pendragons have to jump out to a lead again and hang on to it this time around.
Pender has to come out ready to play hard, physical, smart, tough, tenacious, gritty, passionate, with pride, aggressive, and smart.
The Pendragons have to execute on offense and give a great effort defensively.
This is a game that Pender can definitely play well on both ends of the floor, in my opinion.
If the Pendragons can shoot a higher percentage and score more this time around, and hold Homer to under 50 points, then they should have a good chance to win.
Pender just has to get back to playing the way they were prior to last Friday, and play a great game Tuesday night.
The Pendragons have to get back to playing the kind of consistent basketball they were prior to the 2nd day of the Wayne Holiday Tournament.
Pender hasn't been the same since, in my opinion, but who's to say the Pendragons can't get back to form Tuesday night?
I don't know if Pender's dealing with a bunch of injuries or what, but the Pendragons haven't been the same since their loss to Hartington Cedar Catholic on Friday, December 29th, in my opinion.
Perhaps that will change and perhaps Pender will get back to their ways of playing great Tuesday night.
The Pender Girls Basketball Team won the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament, defeating Homer 52-47 in overtime in the 1st game Thursday night, and 54-49 over Emerson-Hubbard in the Championship Game on Saturday.
The Knights got out to a 14-10 lead at the end of one. The Pendragons tripled up Homer 15-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 25-19 lead into the locker room.
The Knights outscored Pender 15-7 in the 3rd quarter to go up 34-32 at the end of three.
The Pendragons won the 4th quarter 11-9 to tie the game at 41 and send the game into overtime.
Pender outlasted Homer 9-4 in the extra session.
Faith Morris had 21 points while Ashley Ostrand totaled 11 points and 8 rebounds. Carson Miller added 8 points and 9 rebounds while Sarah Krueger registered 8 points.
The Pirates jumped out to a 16-5 lead on the Pendragons at the end of one. Pender doubled up Emerson-Hubbard 18-9 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 25-23 game at halftime.
The Pendragons doubled up the Pirates 20-10 in the 3rd quarter to lead 43-35 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard won the 4th quarter 14-11.
Ostrand had 21 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Tymaree Krusemark notched 13 points while Morris scored 7.
What a great job Pender did to battle back in both games. Winning a championship is never easy, but the Pendragons did just that.
Pender (6-8) battles Homer (4-8) again on the road Tuesday night.
The Knights beat the host Trojans 51-46 in the 3rd place game on Saturday.
You can bet Homer will come out angry, motivated, hungry, and ready to play on Tuesday.
I fully expect the Knights to give the Pendragons a great game and all they can handle, much like they did on Thursday.
Pender can definitely go in to Homer and win again though, in my opinion.
The Pendragons have won 3 in a row after dropping 7 straight so Pender appears to be on the right track again.
The Pendragons have played a very tough schedule, and that has allowed them to get over the hump in some of these close games I would say.
I think Pender has a chance to win a lot more games before the regular season ends too, and figures to pick up quite a few wins prior to sub-district play.
The Pendragons get over a week off after Tuesday night's game though so Pender has to make it count.
Ostrand, Krusemark, Miller, Krueger, and Morris all need to have great games offensively for the Pendragons.
Pender needs to play well on both ends of the floor like they have in their last three games.
The Pendragons have been consistent in their last 3 games, in my opinion, and I look for Pender to keep the ball rolling Tuesday night.
I think the Pendragons have an opportunity to win by a larger margin Tuesday night than they did on Thursday.
The Knights gave Pender all they could handle the first time around, and I look for the Pendragons to be ready for it this time.
I think Pender will start and finish strong, and win the game in similar fashion to how they've won their last 3 ball games.
The Pendragons aren't winning pretty, but they're winning, and that's all that matters.
With that said, I look for Pender to continue their winning ways Tuesday night. I think a 7-8 point win is very possible for the Pendragons.
