GACC Boys fall to Crofton in Mid-State Conference Tournament Play-in Game: Girls 1-1 in Tournament so far
The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys Basketball Team lost 47-36 on Saturday at home to Crofton in the Mid-State Conference Tournament Play-In Game.
The Warriors got out to a 13-7 lead after one, and doubled up the Bluejays 12-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 25-13 lead into the locker room.
Crofton won the 3rd quarter 12-8 to go up 37-21 at the end of three.
GACC outscored the Warriors 15-10 in the 4th quarter.
Jared Minnick led the way with 10 points while Bryant Rief totaled 7 points and 9 rebounds.
It had to hurt to not be able to play a couple more games in this tournament.
The Bluejays (3-13) host Norfolk Catholic (6-11) Tuesday night.
The Knights upset Hartington Cedar Catholic 53-52 in the Mid-State Conference Tournament at Northeast Community College in Norfolk Tuesday night.
Norfolk Catholic has certainly picked up their play lately as they've won 4 out of their last 5.
The Knights beat Crofton 62-50 on the road on January 13th, and you can bet Norfolk Catholic will be ready to play a great game against GACC as well.
The Knights are a much better team than they were at the beginning of the season, and have played well the last couple of games in particular.
I look for Norfolk Catholic to be tough for the Bluejays to beat and contend with.
GACC takes on Pierce on the road Thursday, and I feel GACC has a chance at a win in that game.
GACC also has Fremont Bergan at home next Saturday and Winnebago at home to end the regular season on Friday, February 16th.
The Bluejays have a minimum of 5 games left in the season and have to make the most of them.
GACC will have had a lot of time off before Tuesday's game so hopefully the Bluejays are fresh and ready to go.
GACC has had a few instances now where they have had a long layoff, and if memory serves me right the long layoff didn't help the Bluejays in either case before this time.
It won't be easy for GACC to knock off Norfolk Catholic, especially with the way the Knights are playing right now.
The Bluejays have to play and expect to win Tuesday night though.
GACC has to execute well offensively and play strong defense.
Every player has to play with a motor that never runs, and must continue to work, fight, scrap, and claw hard no matter what.
The Bluejays have to get ready for the stretch run because the season is winding down.
The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Girls Basketball Team defeated Battle Creek 47-43 in the first round of the Mid-State Conference Tournament at Norfolk Catholic Monday night before falling 49-44 to Crofton in Thursday night's semifinals at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.
The Bluejays led the Braves 10-8 after one, and outscored Battle Creek 17-9 in the 2nd quarter to take a 27-17 lead into the locker room.
The Braves won the 3rd quarter 13-12 to make it a 39-30 game at the end of three.
Battle Creek outscored GACC 13-8 in the 4th quarter.
Marissa Hunke paced the Bluejays with 13 points while Angela Jansen added 10. Lexis Haase posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds while Ally Plagge pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Warriors led GACC 23-12 at the end of one. The Bluejays won the 2nd quarter 6-4 to make it a 27-18 game at halftime in favor of Crofton.
The Warriors won the 3rd quarter 14-13 to extend the lead to 10 at 41-31 at the end of three.
GACC outscored Crofton 13-8 in the 4th quarter.
Haase had 22 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Jansen chipped in 7 points.
I thought the Bluejays played two solid games Monday and Thursday.
GACC (14-6) battles Hartington Cedar Catholic (11-6) in the 3rd place game at Northeast on Saturday.
The Trojans lost 44-28 to Pierce in Thursday's Semifinals at Northeast.
GACC knocked off Hartington Cedar Catholic 64-54 in Hartington on Saturday, January 20th.
I think GACC has a good chance to win this one.
I'm sure the Bluejays would much rather be playing for a championship than for third place, but it would be a good accomplishment for GACC to take home 3rd place in this tournament.
A second win over the Trojans would be big, but it figures to be difficult.
The Bluejays have to play hard, smart, and must go out there and have fun.
Haase has to light it up for GACC and have a big game for the Bluejays.
GACC has to play strong defense and find a way to muster enough offense to pick up a win.
The Bluejays have scuffed a little bit offensively this week, but perhaps GACC will get back to scoring the way they were prior to Monday's game.
The Bluejays are only guaranteed 4 more games this season so GACC has to find ways to succeed in these last few regular season contests and in the postseason.
The Bluejays have to work out any kinks in the armor offensively, and fine tune things in these next few games.
GACC is going to need to find ways to manufacture points if they want to make another state run, in my opinion.
Defense can only carry a team so far.
These are the final games for seniors like Haase, and the Bluejays have to make the most of what's left in the season.
GACC looks to get back on track in Saturday's 3rd place game, which is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
