Pender Boys beat Spalding Academy and Emerson-Hubbard; Girls fall to GACC, beat Pirates
The Pender Boys Basketball Team went 2-0 this week, defeating Spalding Academy 63-39 at home Monday night, and Emerson-Hubbard 65-39 on the road Thursday night.
Sam Mailoux had 21 points and 10 rebounds against the Shamrocks, good enough for a double-double. Jared Tyrrell and Tyler Nelson notched 8 points apiece.
Mailoux posted 22 points and 19 rebounds against the Pirates, also good enough for a double-double. Nelson added 14 points while Chris Rutar registered 11. Tyrrell recorded 7 rebounds.
Two good and impressive feel good wins for the Pendragons without a doubt.
Pender (8-13) hosts BRLD (19-2) next Friday night in the regular season finale.
The Wolverines won 64-53 at home over Wisner-Pilger Tuesday night.
This game figures to be a great challenge for the Pendragons prior to sub-districts.
I think the way Pender is playing right now gives them a chance to compete in this game.
The Pendragons may not win it, but I feel Pender has a shot to make a postseason run.
Mailoux has to have a big game, and try and handle Jaxon Johnson down low.
It figures to be a really good battle between those two in the post.
Guard play should also be good and interesting as well.
I think the Pendragons have the guards to be able to matchup well with the Wolverines.
There's a big discrepancy in these two teams' records, but I think Pender has a shot to be competitive in this one.
I think the Pendragons can learn a lot by playing BRLD, and feel Pender will learn and grow from the game regardless of how it turns out.
The Pendragons have to be confident heading into this one, and must believe that they can win.
Pender is a solid team, and has to be pleased with some of the things they have done so far this year.
The Pendragons have to continue to build off of them, and continue to build off what they've done the past couple of games.
Pender has played good offense and defense the last two games, and has to continue that prowess next Friday night.
The Wolverines also play very good offense and defense so it will be interesting to see what gives in this game.
I think this game will be a good gauge for the Pendragons, and give them an idea of where they stand heading into the postseason.
I think this game will give Pender a really good idea of what they need to do to be successful in the postseason.
The Pender Girls Basketball Team went 1-1 this week, losing 46-31 at home to GACC Tuesday night, and winning 50-35 at Emerson-Hubbard Thursday night.
The Bluejays led 16-12 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 9-8 to take a 25-20 lead into the locker room.
GACC quadrupled up the Pendragons 12-3 in the 3rd quarter to go up 37-23 at the end of three.
The Bluejays won the 4th quarter 9-8.
Ashley Ostrand and Faith Morris had 8 points and 10 rebounds apiece while Sarah Krueger registered 8 points and 7 rebounds.
Pender led the Pirates 16-9 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 11-8 to take a 27-17 lead into the locker room.
The Pendragons outscored Emerson-Hubbard 11-4 in the 3rd quarter to go up 38-21 at the end of three.
The Pirates won the 4th quarter 14-12.
Ostrand had a game-high 19 points while Morris scored 11.
I thought Pender did a nice job beating of Emerson-Hubbard, and competing hard in the 1st half against GACC.
The Pendragons (10-13) take on Clarkson/Leigh (13-8) in the D1-4 Sub-District Semifinals at Wisner-Pilger Tuesday night.
The Patriots lost 31-30 at home to Stanton Thursday night.
Clarkson/Leigh is a tough team although the Patriots have been scuffling lately.
The Patriots won 44-30 at Pender on December 14th.
Clarkson/Leigh has dropped 3 out of their last 4, and I think the Pendragons have a shot in this one.
I've been hyping up GACC and Clarkson/Leigh all year, but Pender deserves some love too.
The Pendragons have done a lot of nice things this season, and I fully expect the Pendragons to play a great game Tuesday night.
Pender can definitely win as long as they can put up points.
The Patriots have really struggled offensively in recent games so as long as the Pendragons can play strong defense and put up a good amount of points they should give themselves a chance to win.
I think there's more pressure on Clarkson/Leigh than there is Pender.
The Pendragons have to come through in the clutch, and make more plays down the stretch.
Pender has to play hard throughout the game no matter what.
The Pendragons have to stay calm, and weather any storms the Patriots throw their way.
Pender can't let anything that Clarkson/Leigh does in the game affect them in a negative way.
Big shots and big plays are going to happen, but how the Pendragons respond to them is going to be key, in my opinion.
Pender is a nice team and has done some good things this season, and I think the Pendragons are fully capable of putting things all together against the Patriots.
Tuesday night's game can be heard on 107.9 the Bull with tip-off set for 7:45 p.m.
