Wisner-Pilger Boys and Girls beat Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Clarkson/Leigh; Girls end season in sub-district loss to Battle Creek
The Wisner-Pilger Boys Basketball Team won their final two games last week, picking up a resounding 68-30 home win over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Thursday night, and winning 75-32 at Clarkson/Leigh Friday night.
The Gators led the Bears 22-4 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 17-11 to take a 39-15 lead into the locker room.
Wisner-Pilger outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 22-9 in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead to 61-24 at the end of three.
The Gators won the 4th quarter 7-6.
Wisner-Pilger led the Patriots 19-8 after one, and outscored Clarkson/Leigh 18-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 37-15 lead into the locker room.
The Gators outscored the Patriots 28-10 in the 3rd quarter to go up 65-25 at the end of three.
Wisner-Pilger won the 4th quarter 10-7.
Two great and big wins for the Gators to end last week. I think the wins were two of Wisner-Pilger's most impressive of the season.
The Gators (16-7) round out the regular season at Madison (6-14) Friday night.
The Dragons are coming off a 54-37 win at David City Thursday night.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Dragons.
This game doesn't have a whole lot of meaning with sub-districts already set, but it's one final chance for Wisner-Pilger to fine tune things and gear up for the postseason.
The Gators have to find a way to focus on this one and not Lutheran High Northeast next Tuesday.
Wisner-Pilger has to finish the regular season strong and get ready for sub-districts.
The Gators have to come out fired up and motivated Friday night, and must take it to the Dragons from the start.
Wisner-Pilger has to let things rip, and get out and run.
This is the Gators' last chance to iron out in kinks in their armor prior to the postseason so Wisner-Pilger has to make the most of this opportunity.
I don't think it goes without saying that the Gators are most likely thinking about the sub-district matchup with LHNE.
With that said, Wisner-Pilger has to do their best to put that game out of their minds and focus on Madison.
It's not easy, but it's something that needs to be done.
The Gators have to focus on the Dragons and worry about the Eagles later.
The only team Wisner-Pilger should be focused on right now is Madison.
That's not to say the Gators shouldn't or can't do sub-district prep prior to the game with the Dragons, but come game time Friday night Wisner-Pilger should only be focused on Madison.
It would be nice to get to 17 wins and be 10 games over .500 heading into the postseason without a doubt I'm willing to bet.
The Wisner-Pilger Girls Basketball Team won 73-53 at home against Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Thursday night before winning 43-37 at Clarkson/Leigh Friday night. The Gators then saw their season come to an end Monday night in a 44-40 loss to Battle Creek in the C2-4 Sub-District Bunny Bracket game at Norfolk Catholic.
The Gators led the Bears 19-12 at the end of one and outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 20-13 in the 2nd quarter to go up 39-25 at halftime.
Wisner-Pilger won the 3rd quarter 18-12 to extend their lead to 57-37 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 16 points in the 4th quarter.
The Braves led 8-6 after one before the Gators outscored them 13-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 19-15 lead into the locker room.
Wisner-Pilger won the 3rd quarter 14-11 to extend the lead to 33-26 at the end of three.
Battle Creek rallied in the 4th quarter, outscoring the Gators 18-7.
Very tough way for Wisner-Pilger to end the season I'm sure. The Gators had the Braves beat.
Wisner-Pilger ends the season at 9-15.
It was a tough year overall for the Gators you could say, but there were some bright spots, in my opinion.
Wisner-Pilger picked up what I consider to be big wins over Pender, Oakland-Craig, and Clarkson/Leigh this season.
I think the Gators played their best basketball at the end of the season, going 3-2 in their final 5 games and and 5-5 in their last 10.
Still though Wisner-Pilger lost 7 games by 8 points or less, and that has to sting some.
I thought the Gators were a better team than their record indicated this year though.
Wisner-Pilger says goodbye to Alexis Heller, Ariel Meyer, Ashton Meyer, Maci Batenhorst, and Ali Harleman.
5 seniors that will be missed a lot.
Key returners next season for the Gators include Jordan Wegner, Karrin Jindra, and Aspin Waterman.
I think Wisner-Pilger has to build around those 3. Look for that trio to lead Wisner-Pilger next season.
The way and manner in which the Gators lost their sub-district game has to only fuel and motivate Wisner-Pilger for next season.
It may take some time for the Gators to get over it, but soon the returning players can get back to work and be joined by the newcomers in the offseason.
Wisner-Pilger has to take a break and get ready for spring sports, but be ready to get after things once school gets out or in the spring if they're a non senior not out for a spring sport.
The Gators have to put in the time and effort necessary to become a quality team from a win loss standpoint next season.
I thought Wisner-Pilger was a quality team this year even though their record may not have shown it, but perhaps that will change next season with the Gators having a better win/loss record.
With hard work, determination, growth, development, and maturity throughout the offseason I feel the Gators can have a successful 2018-2019 campaign on and off the court.
