Winnebago Boys finish runner-up in Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament, beat Wakefield; Girls beat Trojans

The Winnebago Boys Basketball Team won 74-57 over Osmond in the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Semifinals at Hartington on Saturday, beat Wakefield 72-57 on the road Tuesday night, and fell 64-59 to Ponca in the Conference Tournament Championship Game at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Wednesday night.

The Indians led the Tigers 22-16 in the 1st quarter before Osmond won the 2nd quarter 15-11 to make it a 33-31 game at halftime in favor of Winnebago.

The Indians outscored the Tigers 23-9 in the 3rd quarter to go up 56-40 at the end of three.

Winnebago won the 4th quarter 18-17.

The Indians went up 17-13 at the end of one on the Trojans. Winnebago outscored Wakefield 18-12 in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-25 lead into the locker room.

The Indians outscored the Trojans 20-6 in the 3rd quarter to go up 55-31 at the end of three.

Wakefield outscored Winnebago 26-17 in the 4th quarter.

Ponca went up 11-5 at the end of one on Winnebago, and won the 2nd quarter 15-13 to take a 26-18 lead into the locker room.

Ponca won the 3rd quarter 14-12 to lead 40-30 at the end of three.

Winnebago outscored Ponca 29-24 in the 4th quarter.

I thought Ponca played well against Osmond, pretty good against Wakefield, and nearly good enough to win against Ponca.

Winnebago (17-4) battles Grand Island Central Catholic (15-6) at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island on Saturday.

The Crusaders fell 51-47 at home to Hastings St. Cecilia Thursday night.

GICC has lost 4 in a row, and has had some tough losses to some good teams lately.

This should be a good game, and I think Winnebago can definitely win it.

The Indians have won their Heartland Hoops Classic Game each of the last two years, and I think Winnebago can definitely make it 3 in a row.

It won't be easy to beat the Crusaders, especially in GICC's home city, but the Indians can definitely get the job done.

Winnebago has to raise their level of play, and play even better than they have lately.

I think it all starts on the defensive end of the floor for the Indians.

Winnebago has to step up and defend well for 4 quarters.

I think defense has been the Indians' downfall in their losses although the same could be said for the Crusaders.

I look for this to be a great and well played game.

I wouldn't be surprised if the game came down to a final possession or a final shot.

The Indians have a knack for winning these types of games at the buzzer, and I think Winnebago could definitely do that again this year.

It should be an exciting game all the way around, and I look for things to come down to the wire in this one.

GICC might have the slight advantage when it comes to height, but what the Indians lack in height they make up for with good guard play, speed, and athleticism.

Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Heartland Events Center.

The Winnebago Girls Basketball Team won 74-39 at Wakefield Tuesday night.

The Indians led the Trojans 21-5 after the first quarter, and outscored them 19-12 in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-17 lead into the locker room.

Winnebago outscored Wakefield 17-8 in the 3rd quarter to go up 57-25 at the end of three.

The Indians won the 4th quarter 17-14.

Charli Earth had 23 points while Jayla Price and Kae Earth registered 17 and 11, respectively. Shaylee Kearnes recorded 7.

Good win for Winnebago.

The Indians (9-10) face Pierce (14-8) in the C1-5 Sub-District Semifinals at Norfolk High Tuesday night.

Pierce lost 42-35 at home to GACC Thursday night, snapping their 6-game winning streak.

The Bluejays won 54-52 at Winnebago on January 19th.

That was a close game, and I think the Indians can challenge and beat Pierce.

You can bet the Bluejays will be on top of their game though, and their postseason experience could definitely play a factor and make a difference in this one.

Winnebago has a lot of girls who can play though so on any given night who knows, the Indians might win.

The season is on the line for Winnebago, and the Indians have to play like they know it.

This is it for Winnebago...it's do or die time for the Indians.

Winnebago has done some nice things this season, and I look for the Indians to give Pierce all they can handle and then some.

The winner most likely gets Wayne in the Sub-District Final Thursday night.

I think the Indians have just as good a chance as any of these teams to win the sub-district.

I'm sure most are thinking Pierce and Wayne in the Sub-District Final, and that could very well happen, but don't count out the Indians.

Winnebago played the Bluejays close in the regular season, and it wouldn't shock me to see the Indians win Tuesday night.

It should be a fun and electric atmosphere, that's for sure.

Hopefully a lot of fans will show up and support the Indians because Winnebago could definitely use all the support.

Game time is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
