GACC Boys lose to Fremont Bergan; Girls top Walthill in Sub-Districts
The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys Basketball Team lost 51-42 at home to Fremont Bergan on Saturday.
The Bluejays got out to a 14-8 lead before the Knights outscored GACC 11-5 in the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 19 at halftime.
Bergan won the 3rd quarter 15-13 to lead 34-32 at the end of three.
The Knights outscored the Bluejays 17-10 in the 4th quarter.
Jared Minnick had 10 points and 7 rebounds while Casey Doernemann totaled 9 points and 7 rebounds. Bryant Rief added 8 points while Landon Stalp notched 7.
I thought GACC played better than they had been. Encouraging game from the Bluejays I would say.
GACC (3-16) hosts Winnebago (17-5) Friday night.
The Indians are coming off a 67-61 loss to Grand Island Central Catholic at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island on Saturday.
You know Winnebago is going to be pumped and fired up given the results of their last two games as Winnebago also lost to Ponca, 64-59, in the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Championship Game at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge last Wednesday night.
This game does nothing but help the Bluejays, in my opinion.
GACC really benefits from a game like this to end the regular season, in my opinion.
Reason being the Bluejays are in what I consider to be sort of a wide open sub-district.
GACC takes on Pender Tuesday night in the D1-4 Sub-District Semifinals at Wisner-Pilger while Clarkson/Leigh battles top seeded Walthill in the first game.
Conventional wisdom says the Pendragons and Blujays are going to win on Tuesday, but anything can happen.
GACC has to use the Winnebago game as a learning experience, and a chance to get better.
The Bluejays' struggles really don't help the Indians at all from a wildcard points standpoint.
If anything Winnebago is going to drop in the points standings since GACC is a Division 4 team.
So this game definitely benefits the Bluejays much more than it does the Indians.
I fully expect GACC to come out rarin to go.
I think you will see a determined Bluejay team take the floor and give Winnebago their best shot.
GACC has to deal with the Indians' speed and athleticism the best they can.
Doernemann has to hold his own against Lance Denney, and Minnick, Stalp, and Rief have to try and contain players like MaKoonce Littlevoice, Manape Cleveland, D'Von LaPointe, and Maurice Scott.
The Bluejays have to play hard, smart, physical, and must have fun.
GACC can't be scared of or intimidated by Winnebago.
The Indians are a great team, but it's not like the Bluejays are unfamiliar with them.
The game might be closer than some may think I would say.
We had coverage from the girls D1-4 basketball Sub-District semifinals on 107.9 The Bull Tuesday night.
In the first game, Guardian Angels Central Catholic jumped out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter and led Walthill 39-28 at halftime. GACC went on to win the game 74-47.
Lexis Haase led four GACC players with 23 points and also had 9 assists. Brenna Rief added 14 points, Marissa Hunke had 12 and Angela Jansen added 10 points and 8 rebounds. Brandi Doernemann chipped in 8 rebounds while Ally Plagge registered 7.
Head Coach Jerry Stracke's girls scored double digits in each of the four quarters. "I thought we moved the ball around pretty well on offense. Defensively we kind of got after it. There were times that we let them back in the game, which we need to do a lot better job at."
GACC (18-6) and Clarkson/Leigh (14-9) will face off in the D1-4 Sub-District finals Thursday night at 7:00 p.m., with the game also being broadcast on 107.9 The Bull.
The Patriots knocked off Pender 55-48 in Tuesday night's second game.
The Bluejays had a scoring explosion against the Blujays you could say, and need to keep it up.
It might not be as easy against Clarkson/Leigh though as GACC figures to have to rely on their defense to knock off the Patriots.
Scoring could definitely come at a premium in this one, and you know Clarkson/Leigh is going to give the Bluejays' their best shot.
Both teams play such tough schedules, and certainly things could go either way.
With that said on paper, GACC should win, but the Bluejays still have to go out there and get the job done on the court.
Should GACC lose it still appears likely that they would make their 21st consecutive appearance at state via wildcard.
The Bluejays don't want to have to rely on that though.
GACC has to come out and make the Patriots handle the ball full court.
I think the Bluejays' pressure could be too much for Clarkson/Leigh to handle.
I also don't know if the Patriots have anyone that can match up with Haase.
It will be interesting to see what happens, that's for sure.
Regardless of who wins it should be a lot of fun as Former Sports Director Tom McMahon is "coming out of retirement" to call a game for us.
It will be nice to hear that friendly voice on the airwaves calling a game again.
I hope you will all tune it because it could very well end up being a very good night for GACC.
I give the Bluejays the advantage in this one given the way both teams have played at the end of the season, but anything can happen.
Winning 4 in a row and 9 out of your last 10 is definitely a good sign at the end of the season for GACC though.
We'll see it the Bluejays can continue their winning ways or if the Patriots can spoil the party.
