Stanton Boys lose at Clarkson/Leigh; Girls beat Patriots and Norfolk Catholic, plus Battle Creek in Sub-Districts

The Stanton Boys Basketball Team lost 60-57 at Clarkson/Leigh Thursday night.

The Patriots jumped out to a 20-3 lead at the end of one before the Mustangs outscored Clarkson/Leigh 25-16 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 36-28 game at halftime.

Stanton outscored the Patriots 16-11 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 47-44 game at the end of three.

Both teams scored 13 points in the 4th quarter.

Broderick Sieh had a game-high 18 points while Marcus Spotanski registered 12. Sam Bates scored 8 while TJ Larson had 7 points and 7 rebounds. Beau Wilke chipped in 7 points while Nate Arens notched 7 rebounds.

The slow start ultimately proved to be costly for the Mustangs, in my opinion.

Stanton (3-18) hosts Emerson-Hubbard (1-20) Friday night in the regular season finale.

The Pirates lost 74-40 at Omaha Nation Friday night.

Emerson-Hubbard may be 1-20, but the Pirates cannot be taken lightly or for granted.

I'm not sure what the case was against Clarkson/Leigh, but the Mustangs really started out poorly in that one.

And not saying that Stanton wasn't ready to play Thursday night, but the Mustangs have to be ready to play Friday night.

It's the last ever home game for the seniors. The last time they will ever dawn the Orange, Black, and White of Stanton on their home floor.

The Mustangs have to come out aggressive and must take it to the Pirates for 4 quarters.

Emerson-Hubbard isn't going to lay down and roll over for Stanton. The Mustangs are going to have to earn the win if they get it.

Stanton has to come out and play hard from the start.

The Mustangs simply cannot afford to get off to the same type of start they got off to on Thursday.

Stanton has to be better than they were against the Patriots.

The Mustangs have to do their best to make amends from that defeat.

Stanton also needs to win to gain some confidence and momentum for sub-districts.

The Mustangs could really use a win to boost morale heading into the postseason I'm willing to bet.

And that's not to say Stanton is down about anything, but I'm sure losing to Clarkson/Leigh had to really bite.

The Mustangs have to come out Friday night and make sure history doesn't repeat itself.

Stanton has to take the fight to Emerson-Hubbard for 4 quarters, and leave no doubt as to who the better team is.

The Mustangs have to be motivated and upbeat, and must give it their all for the entire game.

Stanton can't make excuses, and has to try and avoid getting frustrated when they make mistakes as mistakes are part of the game.

The Stanton Girls Basketball Team won 31-30 at Clarkson/Leigh Thursday night, 55-41 at Norfolk Catholic Friday night, and 45-27 over Battle Creek in the C2-4 Sub-District Semifinals at Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night.

The Mustangs led the Patriots 5-4 at the end of one before outscoring them 11-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 16-6 lead into the locker room.

Stanton won the 3rd quarter 11-10 to go up 27-16 at the end of three.

Clarkson/Leigh outscored the Mustangs 14-4 in the 4th quarter.

Liz Christensen had 12 points while Jessie Brandl recorded 9. Hannah Heppner added 8 points and 7 rebounds, including the game-winning shot with 13.6 seconds left.

Stanton went up 18-8 on the Knights after one before winning the 2nd quarter 13-12 to lead 31-20 at halftime.

The Mustangs outscored Norfolk Catholic 11-6 in the 3rd quarter to go up 42-26 at the end of three.

The Knights won the 4th quarter 15-13.

Jaiden Hartl led the way with 17 points while Jessie Brandl recorded 14. Hannah Heppner totaled 9.

The Mustangs went up 10-4 on the Braves at the end of one before winning the 2nd quarter 10-6 to take a 20-10 lead into the locker room.

Stanton outscored Battle Creek 14-9 in the 3rd quarter to go up 34-19 at the end of three.

The Mustangs won the 4th quarter 11-8.

Heppner had 13 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 blocks, good enough for a triple-double! Brandl notched 9 points and 7 rebounds while Christensen had 9 points.

Spectacular play from Heppner against the Patriots and Braves.

Stanton (21-3) battles Howells-Dodge (12-11) in the C2-4 Sub-District Final at Norfolk Catholic Thursday night.

The Jaguars won 55-42 over Lutheran High Northeast in the Semifinals Tuesday night.

Stanton beat Howells-Dodge 56-50 at home on December 1st.

That was a close game, and the Mustangs are going to need to play very well and bring their "A" game if they want to win again.

The Jaguars are a scary team in the postseason, and this game figures to be tough and challenging for Stanton.

I think the Mustangs have a great shot to win, but it doesn't figure to be easy to knock off Howells-Dodge.

No game is easy or a given at this time of year so I'm sure Stanton will take it any way they can get it.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

It's postseason basketball at its finest, and as a high school basketball fan, one can only be very excited.

The Mustangs have to come out aggressive and must play the passing lanes well as well as come up with steals and turnovers to use in transition opportunities.

I think Stanton's defense is what is going to carry them in this game if they are to win.

I don't know if the Mustangs' offense can win the game for them like it did the first time these two teams played.

Stanton's offense has to be on point though.

The Mustangs have to understand that one bad game, one bad night, could result in the end to their season.

Stanton figures to get a wildcard to state if they lose, but you never know what might happen or take place after a loss.

The Mustangs just have to do the safe thing and win.

That's the only way to guarantee a trip to state.

Thursday night's game is set to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
