Winnebago Boys lose to GICC at Heartland Hoops Classic; Girls fall to Pierce in Sub-Districts

The Winnebago Boys Basketball Team lost 67-61 to Grand Island Central Catholic at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island on Saturday.

The Indians went up 19-17 at the end of one before the Crusaders outscored them 22-8 in the 2nd quarter to go ahead 39-27 at halftime.

GICC won the 3rd quarter 10-7 to lead 49-34 at the end of three.

Winnebago outscored the Crusaders 27-18 in the 4th quarter.

I thought the Indians had a great chance to win on Saturday, but not having D'Von LaPointe really hurt without a doubt I'm sure.

Winnebago (17-5) rounds out the regular season at Guardian Angels Central Catholic (3-16) Friday night.

The Bluejays lost 51-42 at home to Fremont Bergan on Saturday.

This game is good for the Indians from the standpoint of it should be a win and a tune up for sub-districts.

The downside is the game really hurts Winnebago in terms of power points.

Right now the top 5 in C-1 is Wahoo, Winnebago, Broken Bow, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder and O'Neill.

At least one of those teams is going to get left out of state as Wahoo and LVSS would meet in a district final as would Winnebago or Broken Bow/O'Neill as Broken Bow and the Eagles are in the same sub-district.

Winnebago has to come out and not only beat GACC, but dominate them from start to finish.

The Indians have to get out and run and build a big lead and never look back.

This is a game Winnebago should not only win, but dominate.

The Indians could very well make state again, but Winnebago has to keep winning.

A loss to the Bluejays would be absolutely devastating.

The Indians can't take GACC lightly or for granted, that's for sure.

Winnebago has to play up to their capability Friday night, and put up a lot of points.

The Indians also need to turn in a great defensive performance.

I feel defense has kind of hurt Winnebago at times this year.

The Indians don't have any trouble scoring, but Winnebago has struggled to slow people down at times this year.

The Indians have to put in that complete game performance heading into sub-districts.

The Winnebago Girls Basketball Team saw their season come to an end Tuesday night, falling 62-49 to Pierce in the C1-5 Sub-District Semifinals at Norfolk High.

The Indians led 10-9 at the end of one before Pierce outscored them 15-9 in the 2nd quarter to take a 24-19 lead into the locker room.

The Bluejays outscored Winnebago 19-10 in the 3rd quarter to go up 43-29 at the end of three.

The Indians won the 4th quarter 20-19.

I'm sure Winnebago wishes they would of finished the season stronger than they did, but overall not a bad season for the Indians.

Winnebago concludes the campaign at 9-12.

Winnebago had some big wins this year coming over Ponca, Homer, Walthill, and Lutheran High Northeast.

The Indians have to feel awfully proud about what they accomplished this season.

Winnebago says goodbye to seniors Rosalind Grant, Isabel Earth, Bailey Blackdeer, Evah Appleton, and Deona Harris.

These girls will be missed no doubt, and meant a lot to Winnebago Girls Basketball.

The Indians have to be excited about their future though.

Barring anyone transferring, Winnebago will bring back Charli Earth, Kae Earth, Jayla Price, Tia Yellowthunder, Shaylee Kearnes, Jaidan Payer, Jean Parker-Morris, and others.

The Indians have a great chance to be very good next year, in my opinion.

If these girls can stay together and grow and improve throughout the offseason then I think Winnebago has a chance to have a pretty respectable team.

The Indians should be proud of what they did and accomplished this year, but be hungry and motivated to do more and an even better job next season.

These girls have to wake up early this offseason and get out there and play pick up games or just simply go out there and shoot the ball.

Winnebago has to have a ball in their hand as much as possible, and has to be gym rats as much as they can.

The Indians have to wake up everyday with the dream of one day playing in the state tournament.

The boys program has gotten going in recent years, and there's no reason to think that the Winnebago Girls can't be up there either.

The Indians have to continue to work hard and play hard every time they take the court this offseason.

Winnebago's workouts have to be intense, meaningful, and beneficial.
