Wisner-Pilger Boys and Girls lose at BRLD
The Wisner-Pilger Boys Basketball team lost 64-53 at BRLD Tuesday night in action that was heard on 107.9 the Bull.
The game was tied at 10 at the end of one before the Wolverines won the 2nd quarter 18-16 to take a 28-26 lead into the locker room.
Both teams scored 13 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score after 3 was 41-39 in favor of BRLD.
The Wolverines outscored the Gators 23-14 in the 4th quarter.
Jayden Raabe had 15 points to pace Wisner-Pilger while Keegan Ruskamp scored 13. Colby Heller and Hunter Waterman added 11 each.
Wisner-Pilger was right with BRLD for 3 quarters. I think the game shows the Gators are capable of competing with the best of the best.
Wisner-Pilger (14-7) hosts Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (12-8) Thursday night.
The Bears are coming off a 79-58 loss to Ponca in the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at home Thursday night.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge is a tough and solid team, and this figures to be a difficult game for the Gators.
Wisner-Pilger can definitely win it though, and probably should.
This is the Gators' last real tough game of the season as Wisner-Pilger should have a couple of games with no issues to end the regular season.
It's also the last time these seniors will ever play a game on their home floor.
The seniors have to sit back and reflect on these last four years of high school, and what playing basketball at Wisner-Pilger has meant to them and done for their lives.
This will be a big emotional night for the Gators without a doubt.
Wisner-Pilger has to go out there and put on a show, and end their regular season home slate with a big victory.
The Gators also have to take this time to think about how they want their season to end.
Wisner-Pilger is an extremely difficult sub-district, but the Gators have to dream and visualize what it would be like to come out of it.
If Wisner-Pilger can get out of sub-district C2-4, either Oakland-Craig or BRLD could be waiting on the other side.
And the Gators know they can hang and compete with those two.
I look for sub-district play to be tight for Wisner-Pilger.
I wonder how much better the Gators would be with Korrell Koehlmoos had he not decided to transfer to Lutheran High Northeast.
That's a discussion for another time though as Wisner-Pilger still has plenty of talent on this team, and is having a nice season.
The Gators are a good team, now it's a matter of getting over the hump and knocking off some of the great teams on their schedule.
The Wisner-Pilger Girls Basketball Team gave BRLD a scare on the road Tuesday night, but ended up losing 58-52.
The Wolverines led the Gators 18-10 after one. Both teams scored 19 points in the 2nd quarter, and the score was 37-29 at halftime in favor of BRLD.
Wisner-Pilger outscored the Wolverines 14-8 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 45-43 game at the end of three.
BRLD won the 4th quarter 13-9.
Maci Batenhorst had a team-high 14 points.
Good, competitive loss for the Gators. I've said all along Wisner-Pilger is a better team than their record shows, and I think Tuesday night proved that.
The Gators (7-14) host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (7-14) Thursday night.
The Bears lost 55-52 to Osmond in the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Friday night.
Despite the fact these two teams have equal records and are in the same class, I give the advantage to Wisner-Pilger.
I think the Gators play tougher competition for one.
That and all of Laurel-Concord-Coleridge's wins have come over teams with losing records.
Granted the same is nearly true for Wisner-Pilger, but the Gators have lost to some really good teams.
A win would be huge for Wisner-Pilger, and if the Gators could pick up a win over Clarkson/Leigh on Friday as well it would be huge momentum for Wisner-Pilger heading into sub-districts, in my opinion.
Outside of Stanton, I feel the sub-district is pretty even.
I think the Gators are capable of competing well against any of the teams, and perhaps picking up a win or two in the sub-district.
I don't know if anyone can beat Stanton, but with the right matchup, I think Wisner-Pilger could win a game or two in the postseason.
I think the one team the Gators don't want to see is Howells-Dodge seeing how much fits the Jaguars have given Wisner-Pilger this season.
If I'm the Gators I just assume hope to get in the play-in game and take my chances with Stanton if I get out of the bunny bracket game.
It does look like Wisner-Pilger will play Battle Creek in the C2-4 Sub-District Play-in Game so that's all but officially decided at this point.
I don't know...the Mustangs were upset in sub-districts last year, and anything can happen at this time of year.
That's what the Gators have to be telling themselves right now.
And after what Wisner-Pilger did on Tuesday night against BRLD I'm not putting a sub-district upset past the Gators.
Wisner-Pilger has to worry about the Bears and Patriots first though.
Two wins to end the regular season could do a lot for this team I would say.
