Stanton Boys down Emerson-Hubbard to end regular season; fall to Howells-Dodge in Sub-Districts; Girls beat Jaguars to advance to District Final
The Stanton Boys Basketball Team won 61-29 at home over Emerson-Hubbard Friday night before losing 54-44 to Howells-Dodge in the C2-4 Sub-District Play-In-Game at Norfolk Catholic Monday night.
The Mustangs went up 17-7 at the end of one on the Pirates before outscoring Emerson-Hubbard 23-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-15 lead into the locker room.
Stanton won the 3rd quarter 8-5 to go up 48-20 at the end of three.
The Mustangs won the 4th quarter 13-9.
Beau Wilke finished with a team-high 11 points while Broderick Sieh and Malachi Jochum had 9 and 8, respectively.
The Jaguars got out to a 12-5 lead at the end of one before winning the 2nd quarter 14-13 to take a 26-18 lead into the locker room.
Howells-Dodge outscored Stanton 10-7 in the 3rd quarter to go up 36-25 at the end of three.
The Mustangs won the 4th quarter 19-18.
Nate Arens had 10 points and 7 rebounds while Marcus Spotanski and Sieh notched 10 points apiece. TJ Larson added 8 assists.
I thought Stanton competed well against the Jaguars, and feel that performance can carry over into next year.
The Mustangs end the season at 4-19.
Not a typical Stanton-like year, but the Mustangs ended the season strong I thought.
Stanton had a couple of two-point wins over a couple of 6 win teams in Plainview and Madison.
Sieh was the team's leading scorer at 8 points a game while the leading rebounder was Arens, who averaged 6 boards a game.
Wilke, Sieh, Jochum, Ashton Flood, Tanner Krusemark, and Tayton Lierman are all lost to graduation.
These are all good players and big losses for the Mustangs for different reasons, but Stanton has to be excited about the future given who all returns next season.
The Mustangs welcome back Larson, Spotanski, Arens, and Sam Bates, among others.
Stanton could definitely benefit from a lot of shooting this offseason.
Scoring came at a premium for the Mustangs this season so the more offensive things Stanton works on this offseason, the better they figure to be on that end of the court next season.
Stanton has to also hit the weights hard and play as much basketball as possible.
The Mustangs must take advantage of as many open gyms, summer camps, summer league games, and individual and team workouts as possible.
Every Stanton player ought to shoot for lifter of the year or whatever sort of awards the Stanton Athletic Program gives out.
The Mustangs have to strive to be the best, and have to do everything they do this offseason with maximum effort and a great attitude.
Stanton has to work hard and has to feel the burn every time they do a squat, bench, or shoot that 100th shot or whatever during the day.
I really think the more baskets these kids shoot from now until November, the more successful they will be next season.
The Stanton Girls Basketball Team held off a charging Howells-Dodge team in the C2-4 Sub-District Final at Norfolk Catholic Thursday night, winning 46-39.
The Mustangs held a 9-8 lead after one, and won the 2nd quarter 14-12 to take a 23-20 lead into the locker room.
The Jaguars doubled up Stanton 10-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 30-28 at the end of three.
The Mustangs doubled up Howells-Dodge 18-9 in the 4th quarter.
Hannah Heppner finished with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds while Bree Burtwhistle had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Liz Christensen added 10 points while Jaiden Hartl totaled 8.
The Jaguars gave Stanton a scare, but the Mustangs survived and advanced.
Stanton (22-3) takes on BRLD (21-4) in the C2-2 District Final at Wisner-Pilger Friday night.
The Wolverines routed Oakland-Craig 52-27 in the C2-3 Sub-District Final at West Point-Beemer Thursday night.
The Mustangs knocked off BRLD 60-46 at home on January 20th before losing to the Wolverines 48-40 in double overtime in the East Husker Conference Tournament Semifinals in Stanton on Thursday, February 1st.
It's the rubber match between Stanton and BRLD.
This is for the all the marbles...the right to go to state.
The Mustangs are most likely headed to state regardless as they currently sit 3rd in power points, but the wildcard is not something you ever want to rely on.
Stanton has to play like they're not headed to state unless they win on Friday.
The Mustangs won't be able to earn a wildcard to the semifinals or finals by losing at state so Stanton's attitude and effort has to be like it would in a state game.
The Mustangs have to be ready to slug things out with the Wolverines.
BRLD will be fighting for their postseason lives as there's no wildcard option for the Wolverines.
Players like Vicki Gatzemeyer figure to play like there's no tomorrow, and that's exactly how Stanton has to play too.
The Mustangs have to have the same type of effort they had the first time these two teams met.
This game is so tough to call as to who I think will win.
I think Stanton can definitely win, but feel BRLD has a good shot to win given how they've played down the stretch.
It should be a great game once again, and it would be big for the Mustangs to win to secure a 3 or even maybe a 2 seed in the state tournament.
Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
