The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team gave North Bend Central a run for their money Thursday night, losing 63-55 at home.
The Jaguars led 13-12 after one before the Tigers won the 2nd quarter 12-8 to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room.
North Bend Central outscored Howells-Dodge 14-9 in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead to 38-30 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 25 points in the 4th quarter.
Connor Blum erupted for 30 points while Lane Hegemann pitched in a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Caden Jackson added 7 points while Dax VanLengen pulled down 11 rebounds.
Head Coach Cole Fischer says this is how his team has to play the rest of the season. "This was a great atmosphere for basketball. We played at high level and came up short. We need this type of urgency in the next 3 weeks."
The Jaguars (11-10) travel to Wakefield (11-9) Friday night.
The Trojans lost 72-57 at home to Winnebago Tuesday night.
Wakefield has been an up and down team, a lot like Howells-Dodge.
The Trojans play well and compete one night, and lose by 30 the next, although the last part of that statement doesn't really apply to the Jaguars.
I think it's a matter of Howells-Dodge playing like they did against North Bend Central.
If the Jaguars compete like that the rest of the season then they can definitely be a factor in these last two regular season games and in sub-districts.
Howells-Dodge has to keep playing inspired basketball, and build off the momentum they gained Thursday night.
The Jaguars have to come out and play with a sense of urgency and purpose Friday night.
Howells-Dodge has to play with the same fire, passion, pride, toughness, grit, heart, and determination they played with Thursday night.
If the Jaguars continually and constantly play like that then they can beat a lot of teams they step out on the floor against.
Howells-Dodge has to come out very aggressive Friday night.
The Jaguars have to come out focused, determined, and must have a business like attitude.
Howells-Dodge has to take it to Wakefield for 4 quarters, and put things all together.
A win would be big heading into next Friday night's regular season finale at Lutheran High Northeast.
The Howells-Dodge Girls Basketball Team lost 55-42 at home to North Bend Central Thursday night in the regular season finale.
The Tigers went up 14-8 after one, and outscored the Jaguars 21-12 in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-20 lead into the locker room.
Howells-Dodge won the 3rd quarter 10-8 to make it a 43-30 game at the end of three.
Both teams scored 12 points in the 4th quarter.
Macey Kulhanek had 17 points to lead the Jaguars while Erin Prusa registered 8.
The Jaguars played well in the second half it appears, but the damage had already been done.
Howells-Dodge (11-11) takes on Lutheran High Northeast (11-10) in the C2-4 Sub-District Semifinals at Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night.
The Eagles won 55-18 at home over Creighton Tuesday night to end the regular season.
The Jaguars fell 39-30 at home to LHNE on January 9th.
The Eagles have played a lot better basketball the second half of the season, and are going to be tough for Howells-Dodge to deal with, in my opinion.
LHNE is led by the likes of Chloe Spence, Kortni Kasik, and Emma Rosberg.
The trio combined for 43 points in the Eagles' win Tuesday night.
The Jaguars have to come ready to play, and must play really well offensively to come away with the win.
I think it's going to take more than Kulhanek and Prusa scoring a lot for Howells-Dodge to win.
Other girls have to step up and put up double figures or close to it for the Jaguars.
Howells-Dodge also has to play sound fundamental defense.
I think the start to this game is going to be key for the Jaguars.
I think Howells-Dodge has to get off to a strong start to have a chance to win. I don't think the Jaguars can afford to fall behind early like they did against North Bend Central.
If the Jaguars can get an early lead or at least keep things close early, and find themselves in the game in the 4th quarter, then they can definitely win.
Howells-Dodge is the defending Class C-2 State Champion, and I don't expect the defending champs to go down without a fight.
Tip-off is set for 7:45 p.m.
