Stanton Boys beat Madison in East Husker Conference Tournament; Girls 1-2 in last three games

The Stanton Boys Basketball Team knocked off Madison 39-37 at Twin River in the Bronze Bracket of the East Husker Conference Tournament on Friday.

The Dragons led 18-11 at halftime before the Mustangs won the 3rd quarter 11-8 to make it a 26-22 game at the end of three in favor of Madison.

Stanton outscored Madison 17-11 in the 4th quarter.

Great win for the Mustangs in picking up their 3rd win of the year.

Stanton (3-17) takes on Clarkson/Leigh (3-15) on the road Thursday night.

The Patriots lost 67-39 at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Tuesday night.

This should be a good, close, and competitive ball game with the Mustangs having a good chance to pick up their 2nd win in a row.

I think Stanton can definitely win this one over Clarkson/Leigh, and beat Emerson-Hubbard in the regular season finale next Friday.

The win over the Dragons was huge, a big confidence booster for the Mustangs without a doubt.

Perhaps the way Stanton rallied in the 2nd half of that game will spark great play throughout the rest of the season.

The Mustangs still have to work being an efficient and effective team offensively, and must continue to play strong defense.

Stanton is definitely capable of putting together a few wins to end the regular season, but the Mustangs have to continue to work on their offensive game if they want to do something in sub-districts.

It's looking like Stanton is going to play Howells-Dodge in the C2-4 bunny bracket game at Norfolk Catholic in sub-districts so the Mustangs can start preparing for the Jaguars.

These last two games are important, but Stanton should be able to get away with doing double prep if they so choose.

I think the Mustangs are good enough to beat both the Patriots and Pirates while also prepping for the Jaguars if they want to.

We're getting down to the nitty gritty, the time of the year when everything counts, so Stanton has to use these last two regular season games to bolster themselves for sub-districts.

The Mustangs should have 5 wins on the season heading into the postseason.

And a 3-game winning streak heading into sub-districts would be huge for Stanton.

The Mustangs really need to win these last two games to have any sort of hope of winning in sub-districts I would say.

I just don't think a loss to the Patriots or Pirates would be good for Stanton's psyche.

The Stanton Girls Basketball Team lost 48-40 in double overtime at home to BRLD in the East Husker Conference Tournament Semifinals Thursday night before losing 39-35 to West Point-Beemer in the 3rd place game of the Conference Tournament at Central Community College in Columbus on Saturday, and doubling up Twin River 40-20 at home Tuesday night.

BRLD led 8-6 after the first quarter, but took a 16-6 lead into halftime when Stanton was held scoreless in the second.

BRLD had a scoreless quarter of their own, when they failed to produce a point in the third, giving Stanton the 18-16 advantage after three quarters.

BRLD had a chance to win the game tied a 31-31 with one second left in regulation, but couldn't convert from the free throw line, sending the game into overtime.

Both teams scored four points in the first OT period, making it 35-35.

BRLD was able to outscore Stanton 13-5 in the second OT period, pulling away for the win.

Jessie Brandl scored 12 points and pulled down 8 rebounds while Jaiden Hartl notched 12 points. Bree Burtwhistle chipped in 8 points and 7 rebounds.

The Cadets doubled up the Mustangs 12-6 in the 1st quarter. Stanton won the 2nd quarter 9-8 to make it a 20-15 game at halftime in favor of West Point-Beemer.

The Cadets won the 3rd quarter 7-6 to go up 27-21 at the end of three.

The Mustangs outscored West Point-Beemer 14-12 in the 4th quarter.

Hannah Heppner finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Brandl notched 8 points.

Stanton doubled up the Titans 8-4 in the 1st quarter before Twin River won the 2nd quarter 7-5 to make it a 13-11 game at halftime in favor of the Mustangs.

Stanton outscored the Titans 18-2 in the 3rd quarter to lead 31-13 at the end of three.

The Mustangs won the 4th quarter 9-7.

Heppner had 14 points and 7 rebounds while Brandl and Hartl totaled 10 and 8 points, respectively.

Tough breaks for Stanton in their final two EHC games, but a resounding win and great response Tuesday night.

The Mustangs (18-3) travel to Clarkson/Leigh (13-7) Thursday night.

The Patriots were upset 45-40 at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Tuesday night.

Stanton thumped Clarkson/Leigh 49-25 at home in the EHC Quarterfinals last Monday night.

To do that again, the Mustangs are going to need to play tenacious defense once again, and have good scoring.

Stanton's offense hasn't been clicking on all cylinders lately you might say, but the defense has been great.

A 20-point win over Twin River is really good, now we'll see if the Mustangs can turn in another great and big performance Thursday night.

Don't expect the Patriots to go down quietly and softly though.

Clarkson/Leigh's wildcard hopes hang in the balance with this game you could say.

If the Patriots don't win this one their chances of getting a wildcard to state look grim and bleak.

Last year, a loss to Clarkson/Leigh contributed to Stanton's downfall and inability to get a wildcard to state, so now, a year later, the Mustangs have a chance at payback and redemption.

The Patriots have to be stunned and shellshocked after getting outscored 15-3 in the 4th quarter Tuesday night.

It will be interesting to see if Clarkson/Leigh can recover or has recovered from that defeat.

Definitely a tough blow dealt the Patriots' way, a blow that could prove to be devastating.

Stanton can't feel sorry for or show sympathy towards Clarkson/Leigh though.

The Mustangs have to do what they did to the Patriots the first time around if at all possible.

You can bet this will be a game with Clarkson/Leigh fighting for their season in a way.

If the Patriots can beat Stanton I would say they have a chance to knock off GACC in Sub-Districts, but it's the Mustangs' job to not let it happen.

Stanton has their own state dreams and aspirations, and has to take another positive step towards making their dreams and goals a reality.

A win over Clarkson/Leigh would certainly do that.
