BRLD Girls nipped by Ponca in Sub-District Final
The BRLD Girls lost 59-58 to Ponca in the C2-4 Sub-District Final at West Point-Beemer Thursday night.
Vicki Gatzemeyer led the Wolverines with 15 points while Paige Peters notched 12. Tiahna Bonneau added 8 points and 7 rebounds while Kelly Wakeley had 7 points.
Gatzemeyer and Peters did a great job of stepping up and scoring for BRLD, but Wakeley, Lexie Bacon, and Sophia Henneman were limited offensively.
The Wolverines end the season at 16-9.
BRLD had a number of good wins this year, knocking off Ponca in the regular season, Omaha Nation (twice), and Cedar Bluffs.
The only bad loss for the Wolverines if you want to call it that would be the loss to Wisner-Pilger, the only team below .500 to beat BRLD.
The Wolverines were led in scoring this season by Bacon, who had 310 points. Gatzemeyer totaled 263 while Wakeley tallied 249.
Bonneau led the team in rebounding with 121 boards this season.
BRLD loses Wakeley, Bacon, Tess Nottleman, and Justice Johnson to graduation.
The Wolverines don't lose a whole lot in terms of numbers, but the losses are very significant, especially the first 3 names I listed.
Gatzemeyer, Henneman, Peters, Bonneau, Zoe Sjuts, Brandi Simonsen, Kelcee Bacon, and Mariah Petersen all return for BRLD next year.
These figure to be the key players for the Wolverines next season, and I'm willing to bet they will be called upon and asked to lead BRLD next season.
I think the Wolverines have a chance to be good again next year, but the returning players and incoming freshman need to work hard this offseason.
BRLD knows how to shoot, they've got that down. It's just footwork and agility the Wolverines could really use some work on this offseason, in my opinion.
BRLD should still shoot a lot this offseason, but working on agility drills might really benefit these girls next season.
Each and every one of these girls has to take it upon themselves to get faster, stronger, and better in the offseason.
