Winnebago Girls end year with Sub-District loss to Arlington
The Winnebago Girls lost 68-55 to Arlington in the C1-6 Sub-District Semifinals at Oakland-Craig Tuesday night.
The Eagles jumped out to a 18-8 lead at the end of one. The Indians outscored Arlington 21-17 in the second quarter to make it a 35-29 game at halftime.
The Eagles won the third quarter 16-12 to go up 51-41 at the end of three.
Arlington notched 17 points in the fourth quarter compared to 14 for Winnebago.
Allie Frenchman, Delicia Payer, and Jasmine Colvin had 14 points apiece for the Indians. Frenchman added 7 rebounds.
I thought Winnebago did a good job competing in this game, just not well enough to win.
The Indians wrap up the year at 6-18.
It wasn't the most successful season for Winnebago, who won their first two games.
However, I feel the wins over Homer, Walthill, Emerson-Hubbard, and Wakefield were good wins.
The Indians graduate some good players in Payer, Frenchman, and Colvin. These are the only seniors Winnebago loses though.
Winnebago brings back plenty of talent though in Jonna Price, Deonna Harris, Tia YellowThunder, Jean Parker-Morris, Kiana Lewis, and others.
I think the outlook for next season is a bright and positive one for the Indians.
Winnebago has to replace some key players, but I feel new players will be ready to go and capable of doing big things for the Indians.
Winnebago has to get after things this offseason, and play as much basketball as possible.
Perhaps the Girls can play against the boys in pickup games this offseason. That might help Winnebago get better.
Quite honestly the Indians have to be gym rats this offseason to have the kind of year they hope to in 2017-2018.
The more the girls work together and play as a team in open gyms, summer camps, and summer leagues, the better they will be come next winter.
The players also have to work hard in the weightroom and get bigger and stronger.
In other words, the more active these girls are and the more basketball they play, the better off they will be.
Perhaps Winnebago can have a better year next year than they did last year. We will just have to wait and see.
