Winnebago Boys win Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament; Boys and Girls Down Wakefield
The Winnebago Boys have continued their hot play as of late, defeating Walthill 95-50 in the Lewis and Clark Semifinals at Ponca on Saturday, beating Ponca 51-41 in the Tournament Championship Game at Laurel Monday night, and topping Wakefield 90-45 at home Tuesday night.
The Indians jumped out to a 25-8 lead on the Blujays at the end of one. Winnebago outscored Walthill 26-16 in the second quarter to take a 51-24 lead into the locker room.
The Indians won the third quarter 28-17 to go up 79-41 at the end of three before putting up 16 points in the fourth quarter and holding the Blujays to 9.
Winnebago led Ponca 12-10 at the end of one. Winnebago won the second quarter 14-12 to go up 26-22 at halftime.
Winnebago outscored Ponca 15-9 in the third quarter to lead 41-31 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.
I felt Winnebago continued their dominant ways against Walthill, and after a relatively close game with Ponca, got back to dominating against the Trojans.
Winnebago (21-2) battles Hastings St. Cecilia (16-4) at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island on Saturday.
The Bluehawks beat Grand Island Central Catholic 54-43 at home Thursday night.
Hastings St. Cecilia has won four in a row, but they haven't been as dominant this year as in years past, in my opinion.
If the Indians play like they did against Walthill and Wakefield they should be able to win.
I think this game has a good chance to be close though.
The game is close to home for the Bluehawks and there should be a really big crowd.
Not that Winnebago isn't use to playing in front of big crowds, but you can bet Hastings St. Cecilia will come to play.
I'm looking forward to seeing some high flying dunks from Wingett, and the Indians put on a clinic offensively.
Winnebago should be able to win this game when it is all said and done. The Indians have been playing great basketball lately, and need to continue to play well.
The Bluehawks are known for their toughness and physicality so Winnebago has to be tough and physical as well.
The Indians have to bring the lunch pail offensively, and be prepared to come up with big stops on defense.
Winnebago has to play a complete, 32 minute, four quarter game, and do everything they possibly can to win the game.
Talent, hard work, and toughness should allow the result to take care of itself for the Indians, so Winnebago just has to go out there and play their game, and make it happen.
Game time is set for 5:45 p.m. at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island.
The Winnebago Girls won their regular season finale Tuesday night, downing Wakefield 58-51 at home.
This was a good win for the Indians. Winnebago finally found themselves on the winning end of a game.
The Indians (6-17) take on Arlington (9-10) in C1-6 Sub-District at Oakland-Craig Tuesday night.
The Eagles lost 69-36 at Wahoo on Saturday.
The two teams have two common opponents in Wisner-Pilger and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, who Arlington beat and Winnebago lost to.
With that said, it's now Sub-District time and anything can happen.
This Sub-District is anyone's to win, in my opinion, and the Indians are certainly capable of winning two games and getting to a district final.
Winnebago has to fight, scratch, and claw like their season is on the line because it is.
I think the win over Wakefield gives this team the confidence and belief needed to win in the postseason.
I could totally be wrong, and the Indians could certainly get blown out Tuesday night, but I'm thinking Winnebago will play well and put up a good fight.
I think this is a good draw for the Indians, and gives them a chance to win a game in the postseason.
Winnebago avoided the bunny bracket game so that has to be something positive.
Wih that said, the Indians just have to go out there and play ball and put forth their best effort.
Winnebago has to get off to a strong start, and must do their best to keep things close and remain within striking distance.
If the Indians can stay with Arlington the whole the way they may have a chance to get the Eagles at the end.
It's the postseason, and anyone is beatable, and Winnebago has to go in with the motto "Why Not Us?"
Tip-off is set for 7:45 p.m.
