Howells-Dodge Girls knock off North Bend Central in regular season finale; top Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in first Sub-District Game

The Howells-Dodge Girls beat North Bend Central 47-41 on the road Thursday night in the regular season finale before downing Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 57-46 Tuesday night in the C2-7 Sub-District Semifinals at Norfolk Catholic.

The Jaguars led the Tigers 15-9 at the end of one. North Bend Central quadrupled up Howells-Dodge 16-4 in the second quarter to take a 25-19 lead into the locker room.

The Jaguars outscored the Tigers 14-2 in the third quarter to go up 33-27 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Sam Brester led the way with 23 points while Erin Prusa notched 11.

Howells-Dodge led the Bulldogs 10-8 after one before outscoring Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 28-16 lead into the locker room.

The Bulldogs won the third quarter 18-15 to make it a 43-34 game at the end of three.

The Jaguars put up 14 points in the fourth quarter compared to 12 for Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.

Howells-Dodge (20-3) faces Battle Creek (12-12) in the Sub-District Final Thursday night.

The Braves upset top seeded Stanton 37-31 in the first game on Tuesday.

This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams as they did not meet in the regular season.

I think the Jaguars caught a break when Battle Creek knocked off Stanton.

That's not to say Howells-Dodge couldn't beat Stanton, because they could and did in the regular season, but this matchup with the Braves figures to be easier and not as tough I would say.

The Jaguars still have to come ready to play and must not take Battle Creek lightly, but as long as Howells-Dodge plays well and up to their potential, they should win.

If the Jaguars knock off the Braves they will get either Twin River or Nebraska Christian in a District Final.

Those two teams are pretty good, but I think Howells-Dodge is better.

So if I had to venture to say one way or another I would say the Jaguars are going to win their way into state and not have to rely on a wildcard.

Howells-Dodge has the tools and the talent to get to state without a wildcard and do some damage, in my opinion.

I think Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family was just as good if not better competition than what the Jaguars will see Thursday and in a District Final if they make it that far.

So as long as Howells-Dodge keeps the foot on the throttle and doesn't let up they should be fine.

I think Thursday's game has the potential to be a 15-20 point win for the Jaguars.

Howells-Dodge could earn themselves a high seed in the state tournament if they win out so the Jaguars have to realize that there is some unfinished business to attend to.

Howells-Dodge finished as runner-up in D-1 last year, and no doubt would like to win 5 more games before this season is over.

Thursday night's game is another step in the Jaguars making their dreams a reality.

Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
