North Bend Central Boys top West Point-Beemer in East Husker Conference Tournament Quarterfinals; Girls advance to Semis
The North Bend Central Boys defeated West Point-Beemer 62-43 in the East Husker Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at home Tuesday night.
The Cadets jumped on the Tigers early, staking claim to a 14-10 lead at the end of one. North Bend Central bounced back in the second quarter though, winning the frame 15-8 to lead 25-22 at halftime.
From there on it was all Tigers as North Bend Central outscored West Point-Beemer 17-9 in the third quarter to lead 42-31 at the end of three before outlasting the Cadets 20-12 in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers were led by Jake Wietfeld, who led all scorers with 22 points. Tanner Wietfeld added 12 for North Bend Central while Austin Endorf and John Emanuel posted 10 and 8, respectively.
Head Coach Jon Baehr. "We knew they wouldn't come in here and roll over and die. And they gave us a good effort. And we were just happy to come out the way we did the second third quarter specifically, and really kind of distance ourselves a little bit."
Baehr's team trailed after one. "We kind of started out a little sluggish the first quarter, but I thought after we got a little rhythm going, and we got some offensive flow going, we were doing a lot better job."
North Bend Central (12-3) takes on BRLD (12-6) in the Semifinals Friday night at 6:00 p.m. on 107.9 the Bull.
The Wolverines defeated Twin River 38-33 in the other quarterfinal at North Bend.
BRLD has responded nicely following the loss to Winnebago, and is playing some good basketball at the moment, in my opinion.
I think this could be a tough game for the Tigers.
North Bend Central needs to be prepared to start off better than they did against West Point-Beemer.
Credit the Cadets for coming to play, but if the Tigers start off slow against the Wolverines, BRLD is the type of team who could make them pay.
Every game in a tournament gets tougher the further you advance, and I look for this game with the Wolverines to be no exception.
The big thing in this game for me is scoring.
BRLD has had some games this year where they've struggled to score, and those are the games they have almost always lost.
So if North Bend Central can hold down the Wolverines' offense they should have a good chance to win,
Twin River did that, but just didn't score many points so the Tigers are still going to need to do well offensively to come out on top, in my opinion.
You can bet BRLD will come out fired up and ready to play so North Bend Central has to match their intensity and toughness, and find a way to win.
It would be a big deal for the Tigers to get back to the championship, and if North Bend Central wins Friday night, a very tough and worthy opponent awaits them on Saturday.
It's championship basketball time, and the time of year when we find out who is the best of the best.
I think this North Bend Central team is good and has a good chance to win and get back to the championship game.
The North Bend Central Girls won 53-42 over Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in the East Husker Conference Tournament Quarterfinals in Stanton Tuesday night.
The Tigers led 12-11 after one before winning the second quarter 15-11 to take a 27-22 lead into the locker room.
North Bend Central outscored the Bulldogs 17-9 in the third quarter to go up 44-31 at the end of three.
Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family won the fourth quarter 11-9.
This was a great win for the Tigers. Things came together nicely for North Bend Central in this game.
The Tigers (13-4) take on Stanton (17-1) in the East Husker Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at Howells-Dodge Thursday night on 107.9 the Bull.
The Mustangs defeated West Point-Beemer 41-16 in the Quarterfinals Monday night.
Stanton also downed North Bend Central 43-37 in overtime back on December 13th in Stanton.
Both teams are playing great basketball right now, and this should be a very good defensive contest.
Both teams are more defensive oriented I would say although the Tigers' offense really came alive against the Bulldogs I thought.
North Bend Central's offense is going to need to be on again Thursday if they hope to win, in my opinion.
The Mustangs' defense looks to be scary good seeing as they held West Point-Beemer to 16 points.
The thing of it is though the Tigers beat the Cadets 54-31 earlier in the season so North Bend Central had success against them too.
This game should be great. Both teams are very worthy and deserving of being in the semifinals, and whoever makes the championship game will have deserved and earned their spot in it.
I think the Tigers can definitely win, but it's going to be tough.
North Bend Central has to finish underneath the basket and convert at the free throw line.
The Tigers have to also use their size to work the ball inside and try and score a bunch of points in the paint.
Stanton may be more of a perimeter oriented team so North Bend Central has to guard the three point line really well and force the Mustangs to go inside.
I'm sure Stanton will look to attack the basket off the dribble, but I'm not so sure the Mustangs will want to try and score over the likes of Brooke Fredrickson and Kristin Lux.
I'm sure Stanton will look to get those two in foul trouble, but I think you might see the Mustangs take mid range jumpers and throw up some floaters from the middle of the paint and in between the blocks and three point line.
This should be a great game to call and I'm really looking forward to it.
Tip-off will be after the first game between Howells-Dodge and Pender, which is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
