North Bend Central Girls 1-2 in last three games

The North Bend Central Girls fell 47-41 at home to Howells-Dodge Thursday night before winning 46-38 at Tekamah-Herman in the regular season finale Friday night, and 47-40 over Columbus Lakeview in the C1-5 Sub-District Semifinals at Columbus High Tuesday night.

The Jaguars led the Tigers 15-9 at the end of one. North Bend Central quadrupled up Howells-Dodge 16-4 in the second quarter to take a 25-19 lead into the locker room.

The Jaguars outscored the Tigers 14-2 in the third quarter to go up 33-27 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

North Bend Central led Tekamah-Herman 11-6 at the end of one. Tekamah-Herman won the second quarter 11-7 to make it an 18-17 game at halftime.

North Bend Central outscored Tekamah-Herman 13-4 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 10 at 31-21 at the end of three.

Tekamah-Herman put up 17 points in the fourth quarter compared to 15 for North Bend Central.

The Tigers got out to a 13-7 lead on the Vikings at the end of one before winning the second quarter 10-9 to take a 23-16 lead into the locker room.

Columbus Lakeview outscored North Bend Central 10-6 in the third quarter to make it a 29-26 game at the end of three in favor of the Tigers.

North Bend Central notched 18 points in the fourth quarter compared to 14 for the Vikings.

Head Coach Aaron Sterup says his team fought through adversity and defied the odds to win the game. "Well, we overcame some injuries, sickness and everything else that could have gone wrong it seemed. I was proud that they pulled together and pulled out a win when we had so much going against us. They made free throws when it counted, and that is the sign of a good team. Overcoming tough situations to win when the odds aren’t in your favor."

Sterup adds his squad wasn't at full strength on Tuesday. "Hailey Bang missed the game with an ankle injury. We had a couple of other girls sick and not at 100%. Hopefully all are better by Thursday. It is a wait and see type of deal."

The Tigers (17-5) take on Columbus Scotus (14-7) in the Sub-District Final Thursday night.

The Shamrocks handled David City Aquinas 50-29 Tuesday night.

This is the first meeting between the two teams this season as the regular season meeting was postponed due to the weather.

Sterup says the Shamrocks are the real deal. "They are very tough in all areas. They are physical, play really good man to man defense, they can shoot from the outside but also have people inside. They are a tough matchup for us because they do so many things well. We really can’t focus on something that they do poorly and try to exploit it because I’m not sure they have that. It will take a good, well-rounded effort to beat them. We need to play solid defense, control our fouls, take care of the ball and get good shots every time down."

Sterup adds it would be nice to win and advance, and says his team is capable of winning. "We would certainly like a victory and a shot at a game to go to the State Tournament. We will have to play well, but we know we have it in us. We just have to get back to what were doing very well a couple of weeks ago. We know them well, and they know us well, so it should be a good, tough game on both sides."

This game figures to be an all out heavyweight bout.

I would say getting the ball inside and making easy layups and getting to the free throw line and making free throws are also important for North Bend Central.

Columbus Scotus beat Lakeview 44-41 in overtime in the Columbus Holiday Tournament, but downed them 49-22 on February 7th, so it's hard to know what to expect from the Shamrocks.

I would say if the Tigers play the way they did the week of the East Husker Conference Tournament they have a good shot to win.

But if North Bend Central plays sluggish and isn't at their best, it might not be enough to win.

It's win or go home as it doesn't appear the loser is going to get a wildcard into the state tournament.

Everything is on the line in this game, and the Tigers have to come up big and come through in the clutch.

In other words, North Bend Central has to come through when it matters most.

There may be nerve racking or tense situations, but the Tigers have to do their best to remain calm, cool, and collected at all times.

Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
