Emerson-Hubbard Girls go 2-1 in final three games

The Emerson-Hubbard Girls won their final regular season game over Walthill, 56-53, at home last Friday night before downing the Blujays 53-40 in the D1-4 Sub-District Play-in-Game at Wisner-Pilger Monday night. The Pirates fell 54-17 to GACC in the Sub-District Semifinals Tuesday night.

In the first matchup between the two teams, Emerson-Hubbard got out to a 15-11 lead on Walthill at the end of one. The Blujays won the second quarter 15-12 to make it a 27-26 game at halftime in favor of the Pirates.

Walthill outscored Emerson-Hubbard 14-11 in the third quarter to go up 40-38 at the end of three.

The Pirates notched 18 points in the fourth quarter compared to 13 for the Blujays.

Melanie Gentrup led the way with 24 points while Courtney Bokemper had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Caleigh Mackling notched 8 points and 12 rebounds while Emma Haberman totaled 7 points and 10 rebounds.

In the Sub-District Game, Emerson-Hubbard led Walthill 13-9 at the end of one before outscoring the Blujays 12-7 in the second quarter to take a 25-16 lead into the locker room.

The Pirates put up 19 points in the third quarter compared to 9 for Walthill to go up 44-25 at the end of three.

The Blujays won the fourth quarter 15-9.

Mackling led the way with 14 points and 7 rebounds while Gentrup notched 9 points and 7 rebounds. Taylor Daum registered 8 points while Haberman recorded 7 points and 9 rebounds.

In the GACC/Emerson-Hubbard game, the Bluejays got of to a slow start as they only led 10-5 after one and 10-8 at one point in the second quarter. GACC got hot in the second quarter though, going on a 21-0 run to end the 1st half to lead 31-8 at halftime.

The Bluejays doubled up the Pirates 8-4 in the third quarter to go up 39-12 at the end of three before outscoring Emerson-Hubbard 15-5 in the fourth quarter to make up the final score.

It wasn't exactly an ideal ending to the season for the Pirates, but GACC is a very good team.

Emerson-Hubbard ends the year at 8-14.

The three wins over Walthill, and the win over Wakefield had to be the highlights of the season for the Pirates, in my opinion.

Gentrup was the team's leading scorer this season with 235 points while Mackling tallied 171. Bokemper added 113.

Mackling and Bokemper tied for the team lead in rebounds with 101 each this year.

The Pirates graduate three seniors in Mackling, Neftali Ferrusca and Skye Miller.

Plenty of great players return for Emerson-Hubbard, including Haberman, Bokemper, Gentrup, Daum, Addison Mackling, and others.

Mackling is a big loss I would say, but the key returners should help make up for her lost production.

Emerson-Hubbard will have some talented and experienced players next season, and that should really help the Pirates have a good season, in my opinion.

These girls have to be ready and willing to go to work as much as possible this offseason to have a successful season next year though.

There's plenty these girls can grow and improve on, and a lot of these players already know what it's like to be successful, so that should help.

Hopefully Emerson-Hubbard can get back to an elite level next season with all the talent that returns.

The Pirates have a couple of tall girls returning next year so hopefully they can develop over the offseason and be factors next season.

Emerson-Hubbard has to be committed to playing a lot of ball this offseason, whether that's in summer camps, open gyms, or in summer leagues.

The more basketball the Pirates play this offseason the better they will be next year.
