Emerson-Hubbard Boys and Girls go 1-1 in Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament
The Emerson-Hubbard Boys lost 67-26 at Ponca in the first round of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Monday night before downing Allen 30-25 in a tournament consolation game Thursday night.
The Indians tripled up the Pirates 15-5 in the first quarter before outscoring Emerson-Hubbard 21-10 in the second quarter to take a 36-15 lead into the locker room.
Ponca won the third quarter 19-6 to go up 55-21 at the end of three and put up 12 points in the fourth quarter compared to 5 for the Pirates.
The Eagles led Emerson-Hubbard 6-4 at the end of one before the Pirates won the second quarter 11-7 to lead 15-13 at halftime.
Allen won the third quarter 10-8 to tie the game at 23 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard outscored the Eagles 7-2 in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.
It had to be a good feeling for the Pirates to pick up their second win of the season, especially after losing to Ponca the way they did.
Emerson-Hubbard (2-16) travels to Randolph Tuesday night to take on the Cardinals (11-6).
Randolph topped Winside 56-29 in a consolation game of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Thursday night.
This game figures to be tough for the Pirates, but given the fact Emerson-Hubbard knocked off Allen, they have to be feeling at least somewhat confident in themselves and their abilities.
The Cardinals are a pretty good team though so I don't think it's going to be easy sledding for the Pirates by any means.
Emerson-Hubbard's offense has to be on point and their defense has to be strong the way it was against the Eagles.
The Pirates have to play up to their potential, and put together a great game Tuesday night.
Emerson-Hubbard has a couple of games left on the schedule that appear to be winnable, and so even if the Pirates don't beat Randolph or Walthill, they still might be able to knock off Pender and Stanton before sub-district play begins.
Emerson-Hubbard has to be tough and strong minded against the Cardinals Tuesday night.
The Pirates have to give it their all, and see what they can do.
Emerson-Hubbard is capable of doing good things they just have to put their minds to it.
It appears the Pirates are at least trying to start turning the corner so we'll see if Emerson-Hubbard can continue to make progress and win some more games.
The Pirates appear to be headed in the right direction so that's good news for everyone involved in the program.
Emerson-Hubbard has a long ways to go to become an elite team again, but the Pirates are starting to figure some things out, or so it appears.
With that said, Emerson-Hubbard has to be excited, motivated, and driven to play a good game against Randolph.
The Emerson-Hubbard Girls lost 49-36 to Hartington-Newcastle in the first round of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament at Bloomfield Saturday night before topping Walthill 59-54 in a tournament consolation game Tuesday night.
The Wildcats led 10-7 at the end of one before tripling up the Pirates 12-4 in the second quarter to go up 22-11 at halftime.
Hartington-Newcastle outscored Emerson-Hubbard 21-11 in the third quarter to lead 43-22 at the end of three.
The Pirates won the fourth quarter 14-6.
Melanie Gentrup led the way with 15 points.
The Blujays and Pirates were tied at 14 after one. Walthill outscored Emerson-Hubbard 22-12 in the second quarter to take a 36-26 lead into the locker room.
The Pirates tripled up Walthill 18-6 in the third quarter to go up 44-42 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard won the fourth quarter 15-12.
Gentrup had 22 points while Emma Haberman posted 20 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Caleigh Mackling added 11 points and 9 rebounds while Courtney Bokemper totaled 10 rebounds.
The Pirates performed well offensively against the Blujays. That was a solid win for Emerson-Hubbard.
The Pirates (6-12) take on Randolph (14-4) on the road Tuesday night.
The Cardinals defeated Wakefield 47-22 in the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Semifinals at Winside Tuesday night.
Randolph is a very good team, but given the way Emerson-Hubbard is playing right now, you have to think the Pirates have a decent shot to win.
The Pirates have won three out of their last four, and appear to be starting to figure some things out.
I don't know if Emerson-Hubbard will beat the Cardinals, but I think they have a chance to compete and make things close.
Haberman, Mackling, and Gentrup need to have the monster games they had offensively against Walthill.
Haberman, Mackling, and Bokemper need to continue their prowess on the boards as well.
This team appears to be gelling at the right time, and I'm excited to see what the Pirates can do at the end of the regular season.
I think Emerson-Hubbard has a chance to at least win their last regular season game at home against Walthill on Friday, February 10th.
The season is winding down, and the Pirates appear to be peaking at the right time.
Emerson-Hubbard picked the right time to get a roll so we'll see if the Pirates can continue their winning ways Tuesday night.
At any rate Emerson-Hubbard has to get ready to make a postseason run and defend their state title.
The Pirates are still defending state champions until they get knocked off in Sub-Districts.
I fully expect Emerson-Hubbard to play well on Tuesday and on Friday against the Blujays in the regular season finale and final home game of the season.
