North Bend Central Boys and Girls win EHC Tournament Titles

The North Bend Central Boys won the East Husker Conference Tournament Championship last weekend, defeating BRLD 69-40 at home Friday night in the Semifinals, before downing Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 53-47 in the championship game on Saturday at Central Community College in Columbus.

In the North Bend Central/BRLD Game, the Tigers got out to a 21-6 lead at the end of one before winning the second quarter 10-7 to take a 31-13 lead into the locker room.

The Wolverines put up 16 points in the third quarter compared to 15 for North Bend Central to make it a 46-29 game at the end of three.

The Tigers outscored BRLD 23-11 in the fourth quarter.

North Bend Central was led by Tanner Wietfeld, who notched a game-high 22 points. Jake Wietfeld added 15 while John Emanuel scored 7.

Head Coach Jon Baehr. "Came out really I thought really focused and really ready to play. And we knew good they were. And they got a really nice team. They have some really nice players. And Coach Meyer does a great job getting them ready. So we knew we had our work cut out for us. We were focused."

Baehr had nine players score. "They may not score a bunch of points, but they chip in 4, 5, 6, 7. And when we're playing in that manner we're pretty tough to beat."

Both the Tigers and Raiders scored 8 points in the first quarter. The Tigers used a 21-point second quarter to take a 29-19 lead into the locker room after holding the Raiders to 11.

LV/SS won the third quarter 14-11 to make it a 40-33 game at the end of three.

The Raiders put up 14 points in the fourth quarter compared to 13 for North Bend Central.

Tanner Wietfeld had a game-high 19 points for the Tigers while Matt Ortmeier notched 13. Jake Wietfeld and Austin Endorf chipped in 7 apiece.

This was a great win for the Tigers. North Bend Central definitely earned and deserved this victory.

The Tigers (14-3) host Howells-Dodge (9-10) Thursday night.

The Jaguars lost 54-50 to Wisner-Pilger in an EHC Tournament Consolation Game Friday night.

I think North Bend Central has a chance to win this game big.

The Raiders knocked off the Jaguars 53-28, and given how well the Tigers are playing right now, and given the slump Howells-Dodge is in, I wouldn't be shocked if North Bend Central won going away.

The Tigers are also a C-1 team so that should be to North Bend Central's benefit as well.

Simply put, this is a game the Tigers should be able to win.

I could see the Jaguars competing and making things closer than they should be, but no way North Bend Central loses.

The Tigers have five games left in the regular season, and North Bend Central is going to need to win them all to have any shot at a wildcard into state, in my opinion.

The Tigers need to keep playing well to build confidence and momentum for the Columbus Scotus game on Monday.

I think it's a good thing North Bend Central will see the Shamrocks prior to sub-districts, but first things first, NBC needs to to take care of business against Howells-Dodge and Tekamah-Herman.

North Bend Central needs to build off their big weekend, and turn in solid performances Thursday and Friday.

The Tigers have to remain hungry, and must keep their eye on the prize.

These last five games are critical for North Bend Central, and it's important for the Tigers not to take any steps backwards.

We'll see what happens, but I think North Bend Central has a good chance to win twice this weekend.

The North Bend Central Girls also won the EHC Tournament Championship, defeating Stanton 46-38 in the Semifinals at Howells-Dodge Thursday night before topping Howells-Dodge 54-48 in the championship game on Saturday at Central Community College in Columbus.

In the North Bend Central/Stanton game, the two teams really got after it on the offensive end early as the Tigers led 18-16 at the end of one thanks to 10 first quarter points from Brooke Fredrickson.

Both defenses took over in the second quarter as North Bend Central won it 6-5 to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers outscored the Mustangs 7-4 in the third quarter to lead 31-25 at the end of three.

North Bend Central put up 15 points in the fourth quarter compared to 11 for Stanton.

Fredrickson ended up with 18 points to lead the Tigers while Kristin Lux and Alex Humlicek totaled 13 and 10, respectively.

Stanton was 8-10 at the free throw line while the Tigers were 13-18 with all their attempts coming in the second half.

Head Coach Aaron Sterup's girls had lost to Stanton earlier in the season. "It was really good to kind of avenge that, and not only that, but to win such a big game. We haven't been in the championship game in a few years so the girls wanted that to happen, and did a great job making that happen."

The Tigers doubled up the Jaguars 12-6 in the first quarter before winning the second quarter 15-10 to lead 27-16 at halftime.

Howells-Dodge put up 13 points in the third quarter compared to 11 for North Bend Central to make it a 38-29 game at the end of three.

The Jaguars outscored the Tigers 19-16 in the fourth quarter.

Lux paced North Bend Central with 20 points while Fredrickson added 9. Humlicek and Kaitlynn Bjorklund chipped in 8 apiece.

It had to be a great feeling for the Tigers to win the championship. North Bend Central is playing some great basketball right now.

The Tigers (15-4) host Howells-Dodge (18-3) Thursday night.

It would be a big deal for North Bend Central to knock off the Jaguars again.

The Tigers are in the thick of things for a wildcard into state and are in a good position to be the number one seed in their sub-district so North Bend Central has to play a good game against the Jaguars.

This game is just as critical for the Tigers as it is for Howells-Dodge.

I think North Bend Central might need it a little bit more, but you can bet the Jaguars will do everything they can to be the team that comes out on top this time around.

It's never easy to beat a team twice in a season, and you can bet the Tigers will get Howells-Dodge's best shot.

North Bend Central has to keep playing offense the way they have lately. The Tigers have been pretty good offensively in their wins this season, and I think North Bend Central is starting to play some of their best basketball offensively as of late.

The Tigers have an advantage down low against the Jaguars, and have to take advantage of it.

North Bend Central has to pound the ball down low to Fredrickson and Lux, and try and get Sam Brester in foul trouble.

The Tigers' guards also have to be effective driving the ball to get the ball into the post players.

North Bend Central also has to do a good job of guarding the perimeter and limiting Howells-Dodge's outside shots.

The Tigers have to look force turnovers and create easy baskets as well.

Really North Bend Central just has to keep doing what they have been lately. And should they do that they should have a good chance to win again Thursday night.
