Emerson-Hubbard Boys and Girls lose at Randolph
The Emerson-Hubbard Boys lost last time out, falling 60-27 at Randolph Tuesday night.
The Cardinals quadrupled up the Pirates 16-4 in the first quarter before outscored them 22-9 in the second quarter to take a 38-13 lead into the locker room.
Randolph won the third quarter 7-4 to go up 45-17 at the end of three, and put up 15 points in the fourth quarter and held Emerson-Hubbard to 10 to make up the final score.
Jacob Kneifl paced the Pirates with 8 points and 8 rebounds while Joshua Sebade totaled 7 rebounds.
I thought Emerson-Hubbard did a good job competing in the second half. The first half all but decided the game though.
The Pirates (2-17) take on Pender (4-15) on the road Thursday night.
The Pendragons lost 65-58 to Stanton in double overtime in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation Game at Howells-Dodge Friday night.
The two teams met on January 6th in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament with Pender winning 43-36.
Emerson-Hubbard did a nice job avenging an earlier season loss to Homer with a win the second time around, and I think that's what could happen Thursday night as well.
The Pirates have proven to be a resilient bunch this season, and the Pendragons have dropped a couple of games they probably shouldn't have.
I go back to the Allen game in December that Pender lost.
I look at this game the same way I do that game.
That was one the Pendragons let get away, and I could see Emerson-Hubbard doing the same thing the Eagles did in stealing one from Pender.
The Pendragons are an improved team over last year I would say, and have continued to get better as the season has gone along, but this Pirates' team has proven to be super tough and resilient all year long.
Emerson-Hubbard continues to fight and work hard no matter what, and has shown the Heart of a Champion by never quitting.
It doesn't seem to matter how bad the Pirates lose or who they lose, Emerson-Hubbard just seems to find ways to bounce back.
The Pirates have Walthill coming in on Friday so Emerson-Hubbard could really use a win over Pender.
The Walthill game will be a good test and measuring stick for Emerson-Hubbard, in my opinion, seeing as the Blujays are in their sub-district.
I think at the very least the Walthill game will give the Pirates an idea of what it is going to take to get beyond the D1-4 Sub-District Final in a couple of weeks.
The Emerson-Hubbard Girls also lost last time out, falling 51-33 at Randolph Tuesday night.
The Cardinals jumped out to an 11-7 lead after one and doubled up the Pirates 10-5 in the second quarter to take a 21-12 lead into the locker room.
Randolph outscored Emerson-Hubbard 19-10 in the third quarter to go up 40-22 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Caleigh Mackling had a game-high with 22 points while Melanie Gentrup totaled 7.
Those two played great, but no one else really helped from an offensive standpoint.
The Pirates (6-13) host Walthill (7-8) in the regular season finale Friday night.
The Blujays fell 59-54 to Emerson-Hubbard in a Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Consolation Game last Tuesday night.
This should be another close, hotly, and tightly contested ball game.
As tough as it was to beat Walthill the first time around, knocking off the Blujays again will be even tougher.
The Pirates are a tough team and have been coming on some lately despite the setback against Randolph, but more girls have to step up and score.
It's going to take a team scoring effort for Emerson-Hubbard to knock off Walthill for a second time, in my opinion.
The Pirates need Mackling, Gentrup, Emma Haberman, Courtney Bokemper, and Taylor Daum all to step up and score Friday night.
I feel this team has a chance to be a postseason factor again if they play up to their potential, and another win over the Blujays would no doubt help Emerson-Hubbard's confidence heading into the postseason.
It would be a big deal for the Pirates to win their final game of the regular season, especially since it's at home.
I'm sure Emerson-Hubbard would like to send their seniors out with a win in their final home game so every player has to go above and beyond Friday night to ensure it happens.
The Pirates are likely to face the Blujays again in sub-districts on Monday so Emerson-Hubbard should just be able to relax and go out there and play knowing that game is what matters and is already set.
Perhaps a win over Walthill Friday night will give the Pirates the confidence and momentum they need to do something in the postseason though.
I don't think there's a bad team in Sub-District D1-4. It's pretty strong this year, in my opinion.
Emerson-Hubbard will likely have to go through GACC to get to the Sub-District Final, but upsets happen all the time, and certainly anything can happen if the Pirates make it that far.
