Winnebago Boys roll in first two games of Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament; Girls lose twice
The Winnebago Boys continued their dominance in the first two games of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament, defeating Creighton 85-43 at home Monday night, and Wakefield 96-45 at Homer Thursday night.
The Indians jumped out to a 25-8 lead on the Trojans at the end of one. Winnebago outscored Wakefield 24-7 to take a 49-15 lead into the locker room.
The Indians continued their dominance in the second half, winning the third quarter 25-17 to go up 74-32 at the end of three.
Winnebago put up 22 points in the fourth quarter compared to 13 for the Trojans.
Two great performances from the Indians. Winnebago couldn't of asked for two bigger wins.
The Indians (18-2) face Walthill (14-2) in the semifinals at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in Ponca.
The Blujays blew out Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 83-58 in the Quarterfinals Thursday night at Homer.
Winnebago beat Walthill 89-66 at home on December 2nd.
Both teams are playing great basketball right now, and this should be a really good game.
Winnebago is playing great basketball and seems to be fueled and motivated after losing to Ponca.
Perhaps Winnebago will meet Ponca in the championship game on Monday, but the first order of business is to take care of business against Walthill.
Winnebago and Walthill is a big rivalry, and you can bet the gym will be packed and loud Saturday evening.
I look for David Wingett, Drake Gorrin, Manape Cleveland, D'Von LaPointe, and others to have big games for the Indians.
I wouldn't be surprised if Wingett threw down a couple of dunks and got the crowd going.
Winnebago appears to be a team on a mission right now, and I think the Indians have a good chance to win this tournament.
Winnebago just has to stay focused, hungry, and determined, and cannot let up at any time.
The Indians have to play with fire, tenacity, toughness, grit, and determination.
Winnebago has to want it more than Walthill, and play with drive and motivation as well.
The Indians have to come out and execute at a high level, and look to dominate once again.
This team has been great since losing to Ponca, and must continue their dominance Saturday night if they hope to advance to Monday's Championship.
You can bet the Blujays will put up a fight and play hard so Winnebago has to be ready to rock and roll.
The Winnebago Girls lost 54-52 at Bloomfield in the first round of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Saturday night before falling 48-43 to Laurel-Concord-Coleridge in a consolation game Tuesday night.
The Indians led the Bees 12-10 after one. Bloomfield won the second quarter 14-13 to make it a 25-24 game at halftime in favor of Winnebago.
The Indians outscored the Bees 16-13 in the third quarter to go up 41-37 at the end of three.
Bloomfield rallied in the fourth quarter, outlasting Winnebago 17-11 in the frame.
The Bears led 10-6 at the end of one before winning the second quarter 13-11 to make it a 23-17 game at halftime.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge outscored the Indians 18-16 in the third quarter to go up 41-33 after three.
Winnebago put up 10 points in the fourth quarter compared to 7 for the Bears.
The Indians were so close to winning both games. These defeats had to be tough to take.
Winnebago (5-17) takes on Wakefield (6-14) at home in their regular season finale Tuesday night.
The Trojans lost 47-22 to Randolph in the Quarterfinals at Winside Tuesday night.
This is the first and only meeting between the two teams this season.
This appears to be a pretty even game solely based on both teams' records.
Both teams have really struggled lately though as the Indians have dropped 7 in a row and 11 out of their last 12 while Wakefield has lost 6 out of their last 7.
Winnebago could desperately use a win in this game. The Indians really need a win to get back on track.
Winnebago came close to winning twice in the conference tournament, but just couldn't get the job done.
I'm sure the Indians would love to end their struggles and put a W up on the board.
Winnebago could really use a win heading into sub-districts too.
I'm sure it would mean a lot to the three seniors on this team to win their final game on their home floor.
The Indians have to play hard and be tough, and find a way to put it all together for one game.
Winnebago has to play with Bago Pride, and give it their all for 32 minutes.
These girls also need to have a positive attitude and be aggressive going to the basket.
The Indians have to do whatever they can to gain some momentum and confidence heading into sub-districts.
Moral victories are no longer a thing for Winnebago so if the Indians lose there's probably not a whole lot of good they can take away from it.
