Clarkson/Leigh Boys beat Stanton and East Butler; Girls down Mustangs twice
The Clarkson/Leigh Boys Basketball Team won 53-42 at home over Stanton Thursday night before defeating East Butler 63-56 at home Friday night.
The Patriots doubled up the Mustangs 16-8 in the 1st quarter, and won the 2nd quarter 11-10 to take a 27-18 lead into the locker room.
Stanton won the 3rd quarter 15-10 to close the gap to 37-33 at the end of three.
Clarkson/Leigh outscored the Mustangs 16-9 in the 4th quarter.
Carter Hanel had a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds while Lance Paprocki and Jarred Novotny totaled 10 points apiece.
The Patriots led the Tigers 15-13 after one, and outscored East Butler 18-13 in the 2nd quarter to take a 33-26 lead into the locker room.
Clarkson/Leigh won the 3rd quarter 11-4 to increase their advantage to 44-30 at the end of three.
The Tigers won the 4th quarter 26-19.
Novotny had 29 points while Hanel notched a double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds. Paprocki added 10 points.
Two real encouraging and positive wins for the Patriots.
Clarkson/Leigh (7-13) rounds out the regular season at David City (2-18) Friday night.
The Scouts lost 38-34 at Wilber-Clatonia Friday night.
David City has actually competed well against some of the tough teams on their schedule believe it or not.
But the Scouts have also struggled against teams with similar records as themselves.
So I think the Patriots have a good chance and shot to win this one Friday night.
If Clarkson/Leigh plays the way they did against Stanton and East Butler they should have no trouble beating David City.
But if the Scouts catch fire and the Patriots get all flustered then the game could go the way of the Scouts.
Each game is different, and anyone can be beaten on any given night.
Clarkson/Leigh has to be ready to play and ready to go come Friday night.
I fully expect the Patriots to be ready too.
Exciting time of year for Clarkson/Leigh with the girls potentially heading to a Sub-State game for the 2nd year in a row.
The Patriots face defending State Champion Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in the D1-3 Sub-District Semifinals at Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night so Clarkson/Leigh really needs this one against David City.
The Patriots have a great chance of getting it too I feel.
Clarkson/Leigh has to come out focused and ready to play and must attack the basket.
The Patriots must be confident when they shoot and must watch the ball go in the basket.
Clarkson/Leigh has to come out intense, fired up, and ready and raring to go come Friday night.
The Patriots have to be ready to take the fight to the Scouts, and must be hungry for their 8th victory of the season.
Clarkson/Leigh has an excellent shot of winning their last 3 regular season games, and that would be big heading into Sub-Districts I feel.
The Clarkson/Leigh Girls double dipped Stanton, winning 48-20 at home over the Mustangs in Thursday night's regular season finale before winning 34-10 over the Mustangs in the C2-5 Sub-District Semifinals from Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night.
In the first meeting, the Patriots got out to a 16-3 lead on the Mustangs at the end of one. Clarkson/Leigh outscored Stanton 12-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 28-8 lead into the locker room.
The Patriots outscored the Mustangs 10-4 in the 3rd quarter to go up 38-12 at the end of three.
Clarkson/Leigh won the 4th quarter 10-8.
Kayden Schumacher had 16 points while Ashlynn Novotny totaled 11. Kennedy Settje added 9.
In the 2nd meeting, the Patriots tripled up Stanton 6-2 in the 1st quarter. Clarkson/Leigh outscored the Mustangs 10-3 in the 2nd quarter to take a 16-5 lead into the locker room.
The Patriots quadrupled up Stanton 8-2 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 24-7 at the end of three.
Clarkson/Leigh outscored the Mustangs 10-3 in the 4th quarter.
Settje had a game-high 12 points.
What great and amazing suffocating defense from the Patriots, especially Tuesday night.
Clarkson/Leigh (18-5) battles Howells-Dodge (9-13) in Thursday night's Sub-District Final.
The Jaguars won 60-50 over Lutheran High Northeast in Tuesday night's other Sub-District semifinal.
The Patriots defeated the Jaguars 53-36 on the road on December 21st.
Howells-Dodge is playing as well as anyone right now, and has been on a hot streak lately.
I think the key to the game for Clarkson/Leigh is stopping dribble penetration.
The Patriots have to force the Jaguar guards to shoot from the outside and prevent them from getting the ball into the post.
I feel like Howells-Dodge is at their best when they can pound the ball inside to their bigs.
So Clarkson/Leigh's guards have to do their job defensively and pressure and trap in the full court and create turnovers.
The Patriots have to play defense the way they did on Tuesday.
Clarkson/Leigh has to get things going and kick things into high gear offensively as well.
I feel like the Patriots are going to be a really tough team to beat come Thursday night.
Clarkson/Leigh probably needs to win in order to make Sub-State so the Patriots have to come out and take care of business Thursday night.
I think they will, but feel the game could be decided by like 5 points or something like that.
I fully expect this game to be closer than the regular season meeting was.
The Jaguars are a really good and solid offensive team, but I feel like Clarkson/Leigh's defense will be the difference, and feel the Patriots will do enough offensively to win the game.
It's a rivalry game though and anything can happen so Clarkson/Leigh has to be ready to play a full 32-minute game.
It should be a great and heck of a game between the two teams.
I really look for both squads to really get after things and one another Thursday night.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
