GACC Boys 1-2, Girls 2-1 in last three games

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys Basketball Team won 73-61 over Boone Central in a Mid-State Conference Tournament Consolation game at Norfolk Catholic Friday night before losing 67-66 to Norfolk Catholic in Saturday's 5th place game at WSC. The Bluejays then turned around and beat the Knights 67-60 at home Tuesday night.

GACC got up on the Cardinals 21-9 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 17-13 to take a 38-22 lead into the locker room.

Boone Central won the 3rd quarter 19-18 to make it a 56-41 game at the end of three.

The Cardinals won the 4th quarter 20-17.

Adam Reeson had 16 points and 7 rebounds while Blake Pojar and Brendan Rief notched 12 points apiece. Cody Steffen was also in double figures with 10 while Ben Ulrich and Nate Niewohner added 9 and 8, respectively. Casey Doernemann totaled 7 rebounds.

In the first meeting, the Bluejays went up 21-12 at the end of one on the Knights. Norfolk Catholic won the 2nd quarter 24-23 to make it a 44-36 game at halftime.

The Knights outscored GACC 21-16 in the 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 3 at 60-57 at the end of three.

Really good play in all three games from GACC I thought. It appears the Bluejays are back on track after their tough stretch.

GACC (10-10) takes on Pierce (12-7) on the road Thursday night.

Pierce lost 54-41 to Wayne in Saturday's Mid-State Conference Tournament Championship Game at Wayne State.

It figures to be a tough and challenging game for GACC, but if they play the way they have the last few games they figure to have a chance to win.

I think GACC is going to need to step things up on defense in order to win.

I feel like GACC has an opportunity to score some points against a tough Pierce defense, but GACC has to get stops on the defensive end of the floor.

Of course Pierce beat GACC 61-35 in the first round of the Conference Tournament at Battle Creek last Tuesday, but I feel this week's game will be closer given the fact GACC is back to playing good basketball.

Pierce may very well win, but I totally expect GACC to give Pierce all they can handle and ever want and then some.

GACC also has Fremont Bergan at home on Saturday, and that game should be a huge opportunity for GACC as well.

I feel like GACC has a chance to win their last two games of the regular season, which both come at home.

Winnebago is starting to play better basketball and pick things up, but the Bluejays get the Indians at home in next Friday's regular season finale in what should be a dandy.

GACC is already so much better than they were the past couple of years.

The Bluejays have had a mighty fine season all things considered.

GACC has to continue their solid play on Thursday, and give Pierce all they can ever want and handle and then some.

GACC has to go into the game fearless and ready to go neck and neck with a good team.

GACC has to expect to beat Pierce, and has to have that winning mentality that they have had for years.

It should be a close, entertaining, and compelling ball game, and I'm really curious to see how it all turns out.

The GACC Girls were upset 54-47 by Norfolk Catholic in Thursday night's Mid-State Conference Tournament Semifinals at Northeast Community College before winning 54-42 over Battle Creek in Saturday's 3rd place game at Wayne State. The Bluejays then downed Pender 58-46 on the road Tuesday night.

The Knights led GACC 18-17 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 12-10 to take a 30-27 lead into the locker room.

The Bluejays won the 3rd quarter 10-7 to tie the game at 37 at the end of three.

Norfolk Catholic outscored GACC 17-10 in the 4th quarter.

The Bluejays led the Bravettes 13-4 at the end of one. Battle Creek won the 2nd quarter 17-14 to make it a 27-21 game at halftime.

GACC won the 3rd quarter 13-10 to extend their lead to 40-31 at the end of three.

The Bluejays won the 4th quarter 14-11.

Brenna Rief led the way with 20 points while Sophia Hass was also in double figures with 10. Kassidy Kaup added 8 while Kate Gnad recorded 7.

The Pendragons got out to a 14-11 lead on the Bluejays at the end of one. GACC won the 2nd quarter 11-10 to make it a 24-22 game at halftime.

The Bluejays outscored Pender 21-11 in the 3rd quarter to go up 43-35 at the end of three.

GACC won the 4th quarter 15-11.

Rief had 15 points to lead the way while Brandi Doernemann and Hass added double-doubles of 12 points and 11 rebounds and 10 points and 11 rebounds, respectively. Marissa Hunke totaled 10 points and 8 rebounds while Gnad notched 8 points.

Great performances by the Bluejays on Saturday and Tuesday.

GACC (19-3) travels to Pierce (7-10) in Thursday night's regular season finale.

Pierce lost 46-42 in overtime to Hartington Cedar Catholic in a Mid-State Conference Tournament Consolation Game Thursday night.

Pierce has lost five in a row.

So GACC should be able to close out the regular season with a win, but you have to figure Pierce will challenge and battle them and be tough.

Right now it's looking like GACC will play BRLD in the 2/3 seed game of Sub-Districts next week.

So GACC has to use this game against Pierce as kind of a postseason prep game if you may.

The game won't have any sort of impact on postseason seeding as Sub-District pairings come out on Thursday, but it would still be nice for GACC to win it and pick up win No. 20.

There's a lot at stake coming up for GACC, and they have to bury Pierce in this one to give themselves some momentum for the postseason.

GACC has to cap off their regular season with a victory, and create some positive momentum for themselves heading into next week.

I'm sure GACC has many things on their mind, like making state, but GACC has to stay focused against and be ready for Pierce on Thursday.

Pierce is playing their last ever game for their seniors at home, and will be ready to go against GACC that you can bet on.

GACC has to be ready to take Pierce's best shot Thursday night.

GACC has to weather all and any storms that come their way, which I totally expect them to do.

GACC has to be ready to go hard at it for 4 quarters, and must put Pierce away if given the chance.

The last thing GACC wants is for Pierce to hang around and make it a game.

Pierce is one of those tough, scrappy teams though, and could give GACC more than they would like to see and face.

I look for GACC to find a way to win this one either in lopsided or close fashion.
