Winnebago Boys beat Randolph in first round of Lewis and Clark Tournament; Girls 2-1 in last three games
The Winnebago Boys Basketball Team won 75-67 over Randolph in the first round of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament at Randolph Monday night.
The Indians led the Cardinals 23-15 after one. Randolph outscored Winnebago 23-14 in the 2nd quarter to take a 38-37 lead into the locker room.
The Indians won the 3rd quarter 12-9 to go up 49-47 at the end of three.
Winnebago outscored the Cardinals 26-20 in the 4th quarter.
Really good overall team win for the Indians.
Winnebago (6-9) faces Homer (5-13) in the Quarterfinals at Creighton Thursday night.
The Knights upset Creighton 57-51 at Randolph Monday night.
The Indians beat Homer 54-52 at home in the season opener on December 5th.
I think this is a great and big opportunity for Winnebago.
I feel the Indians have a great chance to win and get to the semifinals.
Winnebago ought to be licking their chops right about now.
The winner will get either Wakefield or Laurel-Concord-Coleridge in the Semifinals at Allen on Saturday.
Going up against either one of those teams would be a tremendous challenge, but the Indians know they can do it.
Winnebago has to of course get past Homer first, but I think they definitely can.
Still though the Knights played a good game on Monday and can't be counted out whatsoever.
I do feel the Indians are playing better basketball now than they were then though.
Winnebago has been playing better basketball lately, and has to keep it up.
The Indians have to continue to work on becoming more consistent with their play.
I feel a win over Homer would allow Winnebago to take another positive step in the right direction.
I look for the Indians to come out and play well and run and gun on offense Thursday night.
This is the time of year where Winnebago has to be anxious and ready to go.
The Indians need to play well and strong from the start.
Winnebago has to really get after it and must be high flying and ready to go hard at it for 32 minutes.
The Indians have to be everywhere with their defensive pressure and must create turnovers into easy dunks and layups.
Winnebago has to contest shots, rebound, and box out well also.
Good shot selection, getting to and converting at the free throw line, and making layups are all important for the Indians as well, in my opinion.
The game is scheduled to start 20 minutes after the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Wakefield game, which is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
The Winnebago Girls fell 61-50 at home to Pender Thursday night before routing Emerson-Hubbard 70-30 in the 1st round of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament at home on Saturday, and then downing Hartington-Newcastle 78-51 in the Quarterfinals at Homer Tuesday night.
The Pendragons led the Indians 13-10 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 16-12 to take a 29-22 lead into the locker room.
Winnebago won the 3rd quarter 14-12 to make it a 41-36 game at the end of three.
Pender outscored the Indians 20-14 in the 4th quarter.
Keisha Snyder had a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds while Jayla Price added 18 points. Maddy Cleveland posted 10 rebounds.
The Indians got out to a 28-2 lead on Emerson-Hubbard at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 15-12 to take a 43-14 lead into the locker room.
Winnebago outscored the Pirates 18-12 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 61-26 at the end of three.
The Indians won the 4th quarter 9-4.
Price led the way with 12 points while Natasha Deal and Lakaylah Kearnes recorded 8 apiece. Cleveland pitched in 7.
The Indians got out to a 23-9 lead at the end of one on the Wildcats. Winnebago won the 2nd quarter 10-9 to take a 33-18 lead into the locker room.
The Indians outscored Hartington-Newcastle 23-12 in the 3rd quarter to increase their lead to 56-30 at the end of three.
Winnebago won the 4th quarter 22-21.
Cleveland had 26 points to lead the Indians while Deal posted 14 points and 9 rebounds. Snyder added 12 points while Price notched 8.
Good run so far in the tournament for the Indians.
Winnebago (11-7) battles Ponca (16-2) in the Semifinals at Wakefield Friday night.
Ponca won 58-15 over Wakefield-Allen in Tuesday night's Quarterfinals at Homer.
These two teams met on January 21st in Winnebago with Ponca winning 54-42.
I feel Winnebago is a different team now than they were then though.
I feel Bago has been a completely different team ever since the win over BRLD.
I know the Indians slipped up against the Pendragons, but Winnebago has been on a terror lately starting with the win over the Wolverines.
Not only that, but Winnebago nearly beat Ponca in Sub-Districts last year.
So these two teams are very familiar with and know one another very well.
I look for Winnebago to really get after things against Ponca and give them everything they got.
It should be a heck of a game between the two teams.
I would anticipate the game being much closer than the first meeting between the two teams was.
I think this could definitely be the game where Winnebago gets over the hump and beats another power, but we will see.
Beating Ponca would be a huge deal for Winnebago.
These girls are certainly headed in the right direction as a program, and to be in the position they are in is huge.
Winnebago has to keep it up and has to keep pressing and working hard to get better.
Winnebago has a tremendous challenge and opportunity in front of them, and has to make the most of it.
I know Winnebago will play their hearts out and give it all they got Friday night.
I think it's important for Winnebago to play well on both ends of the floor.
Winnebago has to be physical, and can't get down on themselves if they fall behind early.
The game will start 20 minutes after the Wynot and Homer game, scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
If Winnebago wins, they will be in Monday's Championship Game at 6:00 p.m. at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.
