Stanton Boys beat West Point-Beemer; lose to Boone Central/Newman Grove; Girls lose to Howells-Dodge and Cardinals
The Stanton Boys Basketball Team beat West Point-Beemer 45-41 in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation Game at Clarkson Friday night before losing 57-33 at Boone Central/Newman Grove Tuesday night.
The Cadets led the Mustangs 13-10 after one. Stanton won the 2nd quarter 12-10 to make it a 23-22 game at halftime.
Both teams scored 12 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score was 35-34 at the end of three.
The Mustangs outscored West Point-Beemer 11-6 in the 4th quarter.
TJ Larson had 14 points while Parker Krusemark and Brennan Wragge added 13 and 9, respectively.
The Cardinals led 18-3 at the end of one, and doubled up Stanton 16-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 34-11 lead into the locker room.
Boone Central/Newman Grove outscored the Mustangs 21-14 in the 3rd quarter to lead 55-25 at the end of three.
Stanton won the 4th quarter 8-2.
Krusemark had 18 points while Larson totaled 7.
Nice win for the Mustangs over the Cadets.
Stanton (4-16) takes on Clarkson/Leigh (5-13) on the road Thursday night.
The Patriots lost 48-27 at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Tuesday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull.
I think the Mustangs might find a way to win this one as the Patriots have lost 6 in a row.
Clarkson/Leigh has had a tough go of things lately although half the games have been close.
Still though I feel there is a lot of opportunity for Stanton in this one.
I fully expect things to be low scoring and defensive.
And if that's the case I feel things could truly go either way.
I think if either team is going to put up a lot of points it is going to be the Patriots.
But if it's a defensive struggle then I think the Mustangs could very well get the best of Clarkson/Leigh.
It will be interesting to see what happens in these last two regular season games for Stanton.
The Mustangs host Emerson-Hubbard in the regular season finale next Friday.
Stanton could easily have 6 wins heading into Sub-Districts.
Winning 3 out of your last 4 heading into the postseason would certainly be a plus and a positive for the Mustangs.
Whether it results in any sort of postseason run would remain to be seen, but the opportunity for a strong finish does lie there and exist for Stanton.
The Mustangs are young, and it's important that they finish the year strong.
Stanton has to keep fighting and battling hard until the very end, and must continue to be resilient.
I feel these kids have fought hard and persevered in many ways, and simply need to continue to do that.
Finishing strong in these last two games is going to be very important for the Mustangs, in my opinion.
Stanton has to finish both games strong, and get ready and gear up for the postseason.
The Stanton Girls lost 41-30 at Howells-Dodge in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation Game last Thursday night before losing 48-47 at Boone Central/Newman Grove Tuesday night.
The Jaguars doubled up the Mustangs 14-7 in the 1st quarter, and outscored them 10-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 24-9 lead into the locker room.
Stanton won the 3rd quarter 14-11 to make it a 35-23 game at the end of three.
The Mustangs won the 4th quarter 7-6.
Sylvia Cunningham had a team-high 8 points while Kinley Pohlman totaled 7 points and 11 rebounds.
Tough loss and hard pill to swallow for Stanton Tuesday night.
The Mustangs (5-15) take on Clarkson/Leigh (16-5) on the road Thursday night.
The Patriots won 54-26 at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Tuesday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull.
The two teams met on Friday, January 31st in the first round of the EHC Tournament at Clarkson with Clarkson/Leigh winning 28-16.
So same gym, different game, and I'm sure Stanton knows they can compete and do well.
It looks like Stanton will play Madison in the Sub-District Play-In Game on Monday.
And if the Mustangs win that they would get the Patriots for a 3rd time.
So it's obviously important that Stanton beat Clarkson/Leigh this time around if possible, but if anything the Mustangs need to narrow the gap as much as possible even if it results in a loss.
That way the stage is set for Tuesday night should the two teams meet again in Sub-Districts.
I would say there is a strong chance they do, but we shall see.
Stanton also has Norfolk Catholic on the road Friday night to round out the regular season so a couple of tough games to end the regular season for the Mustangs.
Stanton has to step things up and play their best basketball of the season.
It's hard to bounce back from close, heartbreaking losses like Tuesday night, but this is the time of year when you must have a quick memory.
Teams can't afford to have losses hang over them this time of year.
The Mustangs have to put things behind them and get ready to play on Thursday if they haven't done so already.
Stanton has to come out and play a good game Thursday night, and turn in a strong performance on Friday as well.
The Mustangs need to build some momentum heading into Sub-Districts so that they have a shot to upset the Patriots on Tuesday if they get that far.
It's getting down to do or die time for Stanton, and the Mustangs have to come out and play like there's no tomorrow.
