West Point-Beemer Boys lose to Oakland-Craig; Girls rally to beat Knights, down LVSS in Sub-Districts
The West Point-Beemer Boys Basketball Team lost 63-44 at home to Oakland-Craig Friday night.
The Knights got out to a 15-5 lead after one. The Cadets battled back in the 2nd quarter, winning it 14-10 to make it a 25-19 game at halftime.
West Point-Beemer got to within 2 at 33-31 in the 3rd quarter before Oakland-Craig went on a 16-2 run spanning the 3rd and 4th quarters to build a 49-33 advantage.
The Cadets were led by Keegan Doggett, who had 15 points. Zach Vander Griend was also in double figures with 11 while also pulling down 7 rebounds.
Great effort from West Point-Beemer. The Cadets were right there.
West Point-Beemer (4-18) plays host to Fremont Bergan (8-13) in Friday night's regular season finale.
The Knights lost 46-45 at GACC on Saturday.
The Cadets would like to hand Bergan their 2nd straight loss in West Point in as many games I am sure.
Bergan was going to play Oakland-Craig in Sub-Districts until the Bluejays got them.
Now Bergan is in the play-in game of their Sub-District and will have to play Yutan possibly.
I think this game is a chance for the Cadets to sneak up on the Knights and beat them.
Bergan really has nothing to play for in this game other than closing out the regular season with a win while West Point-Beemer has Sub-District momentum and something to build for next season to play for.
So I look for the Cadets to really want this game more than the Knights.
Whether that results in a win for West Point-Beemer remains to be seen.
Sub-Districts are set as the Cadets will play Tekamah-Herman on Monday in the C1-6 Play-In Game at Oakland-Craig Monday night.
The winner gets Wayne on Tuesday, and if West Point-Beemer beats the Tigers...hey you never know, the Cadets played the Blue Devils tough at the end of January.
So lots to play for yet if you are West Point-Beemer.
The Cadets have to get pumped and fired up Friday night.
West Point-Beemer has to come out with a lot of pride, passion, toughness, determination, and grit.
The Cadets have to be poised, and have to look up court and make good, smart passes.
West Point-Beemer has to find the open man and not be afraid and be confident when they shoot.
The Cadets have to be excited about the opportunities that exist for them here at the end of the season.
West Point-Beemer has to get to work and come out and play a great game Friday night.
The West Point-Beemer Girls won a thriller at home over Oakland-Craig in Friday night's regular season finale, 59-57 in action aired on 107.9 the Bull, before downing Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 49-30 in the C1-3 Sub-District Semifinals from Wisner-Pilger Tuesday night.
The Oakland-Craig game was tied at 11 at the end of the first quarter. Oakland-Craig outscored West Point-Beemer 16-10 in the 2nd quarter to take a 27-21 lead into the locker room.
The Knights won the 3rd quarter 20-18 to go up 47-39 at the end of three.
The Cadets staged a comeback in the 4th quarter, however, holding the Knights to 6 points at one point in the quarter while taking the lead.
Oakland-Craig had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Sydney Guzinski's right wing 3-pointer was blocked as time expired.
Head Coach Taylor Shepard says it was quite the win. "Oakland has a phenomenal team. They're going to be competing with a State Championship berth so it was great to be able to go out and really show that we're able to compete with the best."
Sidney Swanson had a game-high 27 points and 7 rebounds for the Cadets. Reece Snodgrass added 9 points, all on free throws, while Brooklyn Weddle scored 7.
The Cadets led the Raiders 14-9 after one, and outscored them 7-0 in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-9 lead into the locker room.
West Point-Beemer won the 3rd quarter 13-11 to extend their lead to 34-20 at the end of three.
The Cadets won the 4th quarter 15-10.
Great win for West Point-Beemer Friday night.
The Cadets (21-5) take on Winnebago (14-9) in Thursday night's Sub-District Final.
The Indians won 51-33 over Wakefield-Allen in the other semifinal Tuesday night.
Winnebago is a dangerous team and West Point-Beemer has to be ready.
The Cadets have to come out and punch the Indians in the mouth early, and try and take Winnebago out of the game early on if at all possible.
If West Point-Beemer can build a big lead and force the Indians to play from behind that will be to their advantage.
But if Winnebago hangs and keeps things close with the Cadets then things could get interesting.
West Point-Beemer has to go out there and play to win.
The Cadets can't focus on what might happen if they lose, West Point-Beemer just has to go out there and get the job done.
The Cadets have to play to win their way into Sub-State and earn a return trip into the State Tournament.
West Point-Beemer has to come out and execute the game plan and play strong defense.
The Cadets have to tightly contest the shots of Bago's scorers, and try and slow them down.
Winnebago is very athletic and lengthy.
It's an interesting matchup for sure, and one that you don't see happen very often.
I think the game could go either way, but do like West Point-Beemer's chances of winning.
You want to win your way into Sub-State, not hope for a Wildcard or rely on some other team to get you there.
Winning your way into Sub-State is good Championship Pedigree and would be better than a loss for the Cadets from a Sub-State matchup standpoint, in my opinion.
West Point-Beemer has to go out there and take care of business Thursday night, plain and simple.
The Cadets have to go out there and win and get the job done.
Winning really is the only option Thursday night.
Tip-off is set for 7:00.
