Howells-Dodge Boys lose to Wisner-Pilger twice; Girls defeat Stanton and Gators
The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team lost 58-57 to Wisner-Pilger in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation Game at Oakland-Craig Friday night before losing 65-52 to the Gators in "the Swamp" Monday night.
In the first meeting, Wisner-Pilger led the Jaguars 15-13 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 17-14 to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
The Gators won 3rd quarter 16-12 to extend their lead to 48-39 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge outscored Wisner-Pilger 18-10 in the 4th quarter.
In the 2nd meeting, the Gators jumped on the Jaguars in the 1st quarter, leading 20-8 at the end of one. Wisner-Pilger won the 2nd quarter 12-11 to take a 32-19 lead into the locker room.
The Gators won the 3rd quarter 17-16 to increase their advantage to 49-35 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge won the 4th quarter 17-16.
I really thought the Jaguars were going to win at least one of the games.
Howells-Dodge (11-9) hosts North Bend Central (20-1) Thursday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
NBC won 64-25 at home over Tekamah-Herman Tuesday night.
North Bend Central has a lot to play for in terms of power points and postseason seeding and that sort of thing if they get that far.
The Jaguars are kind of on the outside looking in in terms of getting a Sub-State game should they not win their Sub-District.
So Howells-Dodge probably needs to upset the Tigers and beat Wakefield to have any hope or shot should they not win their Sub-District.
It's kind of do or die time, now or never for the Jaguars.
It's make or break time for Howells-Dodge, and it will be very interesting to see what happens and how things all shake out Thursday night.
The Jaguars have to play extremely tough defense, and take the fight to North Bend Central for four quarters.
Howells-Dodge also needs to be better offensively.
The Jaguars have to find that offensive and defensive consistency that allows them to compete, win and be successful.
Howells-Dodge has to find that winning recipe and rediscover the magic from the end of last year.
The Jaguars are the last team to beat BRLD so who's to say Howells-Dodge can't beat a great team in NBC?
The Jaguars have to create a spark and light a fire under themselves.
Howells-Dodge has to get pumped and fired up, and must create an amazing atmosphere Thursday night.
It's the last time these seniors will ever play a game on their home floor so that has to weigh on the Jaguars' minds.
Howells-Dodge has to play inspired Thursday night.
Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on the Bull.
The Howells-Dodge Girls beat Stanton 41-30 at home Thursday night in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation Game before winning 68-61 at Wisner-Pilger Monday night.
The Jaguars doubled up the Mustangs 14-7 in the 1st quarter, and outscored them 10-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 24-9 lead into the locker room.
Stanton won the 3rd quarter 14-11 to make it a 35-23 game at the end of three.
The Mustangs won the 4th quarter 7-6.
Janessa Schmidt had 10 points while Riley Pokorny totaled 8. Brooklyn Macholan added 7 points and 7 rebounds.
Both the Gators and Jaguars scored 14 points in the 1st quarter. Wisner-Pilger outscored Howells-Dodge 22-14 in the 2nd quarter to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room.
The Jaguars outscored Wisner-Pilger 20-12 the 3rd quarter to tie the game at 48 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge won the 4th quarter 20-13.
Cassie Pieper led the way with 18 points while Pokorny notched 15. Jaedyn Ratzlaff added 14 while Macholan posted 9.
Two solid wins for the Jaguars.
Howells-Dodge (8-12) plays host to North Bend Central (20-2) Thursday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
NBC won 59-23 at home over Tekamah-Herman Tuesday night.
North Bend Central is loaded with talent and size.
The Jaguars have solid posts and good guards too though, and it's the regular season finale for both teams.
It's the last time that these seniors will ever play a game on their home floor.
Howells-Dodge has to come out and play inspired and with passion Thursday night.
The Jaguars have to play out of their minds, and give the Tigers all they can ever want and handle and then some.
Howells-Dodge is likely to play Lutheran High Northeast in the first round of Sub-Districts on Tuesday.
That game could either way, but first things first, the Jaguars have to focus on and worry about North Bend Central first.
The Jaguars have been playing good basketball in the second half of the season.
Howells-Dodge hasn't beat any big name teams yet or anything like that, but they've given a few of them a run for their money.
The Tigers sometimes struggle to score at the basket and rim, and if the Jaguars can keep things close then who knows what will happen.
I could see Howells-Dodge losing this game close or losing it big.
An upset could happen too, you just never know, especially at this time of year.
Conventional wisdom would say North Bend Central wins, but that's why games are played on the court and not on paper.
Anything can happen, and the Jaguars have to play upset-minded and optimistic.
Howells-Dodge can't back down from or be afraid of anyone, and that includes the Tigers.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Bull.
