Howells-Dodge Boys beat Clarkson/Leigh, lose to BRLD in East Husker Conference Tournament; Girls lose to Tekamah-Herman

The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team won 51-46 over Clarkson/Leigh at Wisner-Pilger in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament Saturday night before losing 72-44 to BRLD in Lyons in the Quarterfinals Tuesday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull.

The Jaguars led 16-7 at the end of one before the Patriots outscored them 15-10 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 26-22 game at halftime.

Howells-Dodge won the 3rd quarter 13-11 to go up 39-33 at the end of three.

Clarkson/Leigh won the 4th quarter 13-12.

The Wolverines led 25-4 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 14-9 to take a 39-13 lead into the locker room.

BRLD outscored Howells-Dodge 18-12 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 57-25 at the end of three.

The Jaguars won the 4th quarter 19-15.

Darrin Pokorny had 10 points while Blake Sindelar and Aandy Dominguez totaled 7 each.

Good win for Howells-Dodge on Saturday.

The Jaguars (11-7) battle Wisner-Pilger (11-7) in an EHC Tournament Consolation Game at Oakland-Craig Friday night.

The Gators fell 54-41 at North Bend Central in Tuesday night's Quarterfinals.

This should be a heck of a game between these two teams.

The two teams will also meet on Monday in Wisner so the two get to play back-to-back only with the second meeting coming after the Conference Tournament due to the game being rescheduled cause of the weather in January.

These are two critical matchups for Howells-Dodge as both teams jockey for postseason positioning.

I would anticipate the two teams splitting their matchups, but we will see.

The Jaguars will be tested the rest of the regular season so we'll see what Howells-Dodge has and if they can make a run.

BRLD is a great team, and losing the way they did to the Wolverines is nothing to be ashamed of.

The Jaguars have to toughen up and play well from here on out though.

These next five games could very well make or break Howells-Dodge and their hopes of making a postseason run and a return trip to State.

The Jaguars have to be on top of their game from here on out.

Howells-Dodge can't have any more rough games or periods of struggle if they hope to do something at the end of the season here.

The Jaguars have to play tough, smart, hard, and physical.

I know Howells-Dodge has been battling some sickness and injuries lately so hopefully the Jaguars can get to full strength here shortly if they aren't there already.

These next two games against Wisner-Pilger are going to be big though.

I think it's important for Howells-Dodge to win at least one of them.

Both would be dandy, but a split would be the minimum that I feel would be a positive for the Jaguars.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Oakland.

The Howells-Dodge Girls lost 45-37 to Tekamah-Herman in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament at Clarkson Friday night.

The Jaguars went up 13-8 at the end of one. Tekamah-Herman won the 2nd quarter 12-9 to take a 22-20 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers won the 3rd quarter 8-6 to tie the game at 28 at the end of three.

Tekamah-Herman outscored Howells-Dodge 17-9 in the 4th quarter.

Brooklyn Macholan had a team-high 11 points while Janessa Schmidt had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Tough loss for the Jaguars coming off 5 wins in their last 6 games.

Howells-Dodge (6-12) hosts Stanton (5-13) in an EHC Tournament Consolation Game on Thursday.

The Mustangs fell 28-16 to Clarkson/Leigh in Saturday's other first round game at Clarkson.

The two teams met in Stanton on December 6th in the season opener with the Jaguars winning 39-26.

I would anticipate Howells-Dodge winning again, but you never know seeing as the Jaguars beat Tekamah-Herman the first time the two teams played and then lost to the Tigers.

Both teams have had the whole week to practice and prepare and get ready for one another.

I feel Howells-Dodge has an advantage inside with Macholan, Schmidt, and Jaedyn Ratzlaff.

The Mustangs have Sylvia Cunningham, who is also solid.

I think the Jaguars have more depth at the post positions though, and look for Howells-Dodge to pound the rock inside as well as kick it out to their guards on the perimeter for 3's.

Being at home should be an advantage for the Jaguars too I feel.

I think Howells-Dodge has a great shot to get this game on Thursday and then beat Wisner-Pilger on Monday.

At least two more wins this season would be nice for the Jaguars and then who knows what will happen in Sub-Districts.

Howells-Dodge has to push past the loss to Tekamah-Herman and keep pressing forward on Thursday.

As tough as the loss was and as much as I'm sure the Jaguars would like to still be in the winner's bracket, Howells-Dodge has to forget about it and move on.

Easier said than done, but the Jaguars need to find a way to have a quick memory and come out and play great basketball Thursday night.

The game will likely tip-off around 7:45 p.m. or so.

It's the last of three games at Howells-Dodge on Thursday so a busy day and night of basketball on one of the Jaguars' home courts.
