Clarkson/Leigh Boys go 0-2 at St. Edward Holiday Tournament; Girls reach championship game

The Clarkson/Leigh Boys failed to find any answers to their struggles, falling twice at the St. Edward Holiday Tournament last week.

The Patriots lost 60-54 to the host Beavers on Tuesday before falling 63-59 in overtime to Nebraska Christian on Wednesday.

Clarkson/Leigh trailed St. Edward 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers won the second quarter 14-12 to take a 29-21 lead into the locker room.

The Patriots outscored St. Edward 20-18 in the third quarter to make it a 47-41 game at the end of three.

Both teams scored 13 fourth quarter points.

Kobe Paprocki had a team-high 14 points and 7 rebounds while Ben McMullin notched 12 points and 7 rebounds. Colby Becker and Dominik Harper added 9 and 8 points, respectively.

The Eagles led Clarkson/Leigh 15-3 at the end of one. The Patriots tripled up Nebraska Christian 15-5 in the second quarter to make it 20-18 game at halftime.

Clarkson/Leigh won the third quarter 19-17 to tie the game at 37 heading into the fourth quarter.

Both teams scored 16 fourth quarter points.

The Eagles outlasted the Patriots 10-6 in the extra session.

Becker led the team with 18 points. Paprocki added 16 points and 8 rebounds while McMullin registered 10 points and 8 rebounds. Blake Paprocki totaled 9 rebounds.

Clarkson/Leigh has to be disappointed they didn't pick up at least one win in the Holiday Tournament. 0-2 is a tough pill to swallow without a doubt.

The Patriots (1-10) host North Bend Central (8-1) Tuesday night.

The Tigers defeated Raymond Central 69-41 at home Saturday evening.

North Bend Central has been on a roll ever since losing their opener to Twin River.

The Tigers are legit, and Clarkson/Leigh is going to have to play exceptional basketball just to hang with North Bend Central.

Perhaps the Patriots can start to figure some things out this week. This is Clarkson/Leigh's only game of the week so they don't have to worry about any other opponent until next Tuesday.

The biggest thing for these kids is to keep their spirits up and keep believing. The Patriots have had a tough season so far, but if the players continue to grow and persevere, a turnaround is not out of the realm of possibility.

There's a lot that needs fixing for Clarkson/Leigh, but if the Patriots can make the necessary tweaks to get them over the hump, I think this team could figure things out at some point.

Tuesday night's game could be close or it could be a blowout, in my opinion. I think a lot of it depends on how much resolve and moxie Clarkson/Leigh comes to play with, and how focused the Tigers are.

The Clarkson/Leigh Girls won their first game of the St. Edward Holiday Tournament last week over the host Beavers before losing the championship game to Nebraska Christian.

The Patriots downed St. Edward 44-30 on Tuesday before falling to the Eagles 42-18 on Wednesday.

Clarkson/Leigh held an 8-6 lead over the Beavers at the end of one. The Patriots doubled up St. Edward 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 24-14 lead into the locker room.

The Beavers won the third quarter 10-9 to make it a 33-24 game at the end of three.

Clarkson/Leigh outscored St. Edward 11-6 in the final frame.

Hannah Kasik had a team-high 10 points. Maddie Cerv pulled down 9 rebounds.

The Eagles led 15-3 at the end of one over the Patriots. Nebraska Christian outscored Clarkson/Leigh 14-2 in the second quarter to make it a 29-5 game at halftime.

Both teams scored 9 points in the third quarter to make it a 38-14 game at the end of three, and four fourth quarter points to make up the final score.

Kaegan Held had a team-high 7 points. Shelby Paprocki added 10 rebounds.

The Patriots played pretty good basketball against St. Edward, and played at a high level in the second half against Nebraska Christian.

Clarkson/Leigh (3-8) hosts North Bend Central (7-2) Tuesday night.

The Tigers defeated Raymond Central 47-30 at home on Saturday.

North Bend Central is good, but if the Patriots play the way they did against St. Edward, and in the second half against Nebraska Christian, they may be able to hold their own.

That's asking a lot though as this is one of the few C-1 teams Clarkson/Leigh will have played all year.

It's definitely a step up in competition for the Patriots, there's no doubt about that.

Clarkson/Leigh is used to playing C-2, D-1, and D-2 schools, meaning the Patriots will have to step up their game even more than they normally would seeing as they're playing a C-1 school.

Good, tough, quality competition is good for Clarkson/Leigh though. The Patriots hope this game will bring out the best in them, and allow them to succeed and have a good game.

Clarkson/Leigh has to do a lot more scoring than they did against the Eagles, but if the Patriots can get up into the 40's this could be a close, entertaining ball game.

Clarkson/Leigh has to play loose, optimistic basketball for four quarters, and leave everything out on the floor.
