Winnebago Boys beat Oakland-Craig; Girls lose to Knights
The Winnebago Boys continued their winning ways, defeating Oakland-Craig 91-48 on the road Saturday night.
The Indians led the Knights 27-16 after one. Winnebago won the second quarter 23-15 to go up 50-31 at halftime.
The Indians outscored Oakland-Craig 32-9 in the third quarter to lead 82-40 at the end of three.
Winnebago scored 9 fourth quarter points compared to 8 for the Knights.
I wasn't surprised by the result of this game at all. The Indians are a very good team.
Winnebago (14-0) hosts Emerson-Hubbard (4-7) Tuesday night.
The Pirates have won three in a row, defeating Homer 63-43 in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament on Friday, and Wakefield 56-54 on Saturday, also in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament.
Emerson-Hubbard has certainly started to play better basketball than they had been playing in the early part of the season.
The Pirates are not a team the Indians want or can afford to take lightly.
I'm not suggesting Winnebago is going to lose, because I don't see the Indians falling to Emerson-Hubbard, but in order to win big and in impressive fashion, the Indians have to be focused and ready to play.
I could see this game being closer than the experts think if Winnebago doesn't come ready to play.
I really don't see that being an issue though. The Indians have continued to bring it night in and night out, and I don't look for that to change Tuesday night.
Winnebago has something special going on here, and it's going to take a lot for somebody to knock off the Indians.
The Pirates have made some nice improvements, but not enough to beat Winnebago, in my opinion.
Emerson-Hubbard is doing some nice things right now, but I think they will definitely meet their match when they take the floor against the Indians.
Winnebago has Wynot on Friday so the Indians have a good chance to be 16-0 after this week.
The Winnebago Girls had a good showing at Oakland-Craig on Saturday, but lost 61-45 to the Knights.
Oakland-Craig led the Indians 20-9 at the end of one. The Knights won the second quarter 10-9 to lead 30-18 at halftime.
Oakland-Craig outscored Winnebago 14-5 in the third quarter to go up 44-23 at the end of three.
The Indians notched 22 fourth quarter points compared to 17 for the Knights.
Winnebago kept things somewhat respectable. I still think the Indians are a better team than their record indicates.
Winnebago (4-9) hosts Emerson-Hubbard (10-1) Tuesday night.
The Pirates beat Pender 57-54 on Saturday in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament after downing Wakefield 63-24 in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament on Thursday.
Emerson-Hubbard is a good team, but I think the Indians can compete with the Pirates, and give them a run for their money.
Winnebago is capable of beating just about anyone they play, and eventually things have to come together for this team.
This is a big week for the Indians. Winnebago has Guardian Angels Central Catholic on the road Thursday night, and Wynot on the road Friday night.
The schedule does the Indians no favors this week, but in order to be the best, you have to beat the best, and that's certainly the motto Winnebago has to play with this week.
I look for the Indians to play tough, optimistic basketball Tuesday night and the rest of the week.
I feel like Winnebago has a chance to keep things somewhat close and respectable with any of the three teams they play this week, although the GACC game will be very difficult.
It's time for the Indians to step things up. Winnebago has competed well at times this year, but has yet to put things together.
The Indians' losing streak is at four, and Winnebago just assumes see it end at that number with a big win Tuesday night.
