Pender Boys lose to Wakefield and Homer, beat Homer; Girls down Homer twice, lose close game to Emerson-Hubbard

The Pender Boys are 1-2 in their last three games, losing 70-49 to Wakefield on Friday and 70-51 to Homer on Saturday in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament at Emerson before coming back and defeating the Knights 79-68 on the road Tuesday night.

The Trojans got out to a 23-7 lead at the end of one. Wakefield won the second quarter 15-14 to go up 38-21 at halftime.

The Trojans outscored the Pendragons 18-11 in the third quarter to make it a 56-32 game at the end of three.

Pender notched 17 fourth quarter points compared to 14 for Wakefield.

In the first matchup with Homer, the Knights jumped out to a 15-9 lead at the end of one. Homer outscored the Pendragons 23-12 in the second quarter to go up 38-21 at halftime.

The Knights won the third quarter 15-13 to make it a 53-34 game at the end of three.

Both teams scored 17 fourth quarter points.

In the second game, Pender led 24-22 after one. The Pendragons won the second quarter 17-15 to lead 41-37 at halftime.

Pender outscored Homer 20-11 in the third quarter to go up 61-48 after three.

The Knights put up 20 points in the fourth quarter while the Pendragons notched 18.

Head Coach Sean King says his team played well offensively.

"Yeah it was a great game. Our offense really started clicking. Had a couple boys that really showed up and had a couple of great performances. And I think we started playing well as a team so it was good to see."

James Bensen had 36 points and 14 rebounds in the win for the Pendragons.

Pender (2-11) hosts Lyons-Decatur Northeast (8-2) Friday night.

The Cougars fell 53-34 at Mead on Saturday after downing Tekamah-Herman 60-43 at home Friday night.

King says he likes the way his team matches up with the Cougars.

"I think we matchup pretty well. They come out, they play tough, they always have, and they've got some good post play, but I think we matchup pretty well. We've got some strong posts too, and have some guards that can play some good defense so it should be a good game."

Some players the Pendragons will have to try and contain include Alec Anderson, Marcus Hegy, Montana Riecken, Jon Christiansen, and Cole Christoffersen.

Pender has to have some confidence heading into this game. Anytime you score 79 points against a team you are doing something right.

The Pendragons certainly got hot last time out, and it will be interesting to see if Pender can continue their high scoring efforts Friday night.

I think this could be a very intriguing game. Lyons-Decatur Northeast is coming off a loss while the Pendragons won last time out.

A week ago I would of said no way Pender wins, but now I believe the Pendragons have a shot.

The Cougars will be tough, but I look for a good game between these two teams. I really think Pender may be starting to play their best basketball of the season right now.

The game is set to begin after the girls game, which is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. The games can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.

The Pender Girls continue to play at a high level, knocking off Homer 78-39 Thursday night and falling 57-54 to Emerson-Hubbard on Saturday in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament. The Pendragons won 70-42 at Homer Tuesday night.

In the first matchup with the Knights, Pender led 21-13 after one. Homer won the second quarter 14-8 to make it a 29-27 game at halftime.

The Pendragons outscored the Knights 19-8 in the third quarter to go up 48-35 at the end of three.

Pender scored 30 fourth quarter points and limited Homer to 4.

Hallie Ballinger had 20 points and 13 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Kam Anderson notched 17 while Justice Sorenson scored 15. Amber English notched 10 points while Cecelie Jacobsen ripped down 14 rebounds.

The Pirates led the Pendragons 14-8 at the end of one. Pender won the second quarter 17-13 to make it a 27-25 game at halftime.

The Pirates outscored the Pendragons 12-10 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 39-35 at the end of three.

Pender put up 19 fourth quarter points compared to 18 for Emerson-Hubbard.

Anderson led the way with 17 points while English totaled 14. Ballinger had 9 points and 12 rebounds while Jacobsen registered 9 points and 10 rebounds.

In the second matchup with the Knights, the Pendragons tripled up Homer 21-7 in the first quarter. Pender won the second quarter 17-14 to lead 38-21 at halftime.

The Pendragons outscored the Knights 22-10 in the third quarter to go up 60-31 at the end of three.

Homer put up 11 fourth quarter points compared to 10 for Pender.

Sorenson led the way with 26 points. English and Anderson added 12 points each while Ballinger recorded 7 points and 14 rebounds. Jacobsen added 11 rebounds.

The Pendragons have continued to play great basketball. Pender is playing at a high level right now, and did a great job keeping things close with Emerson-Hubbard and blowing out Homer.

The Pendragons (8-6) play host to Lyons-Decatur Northeast (9-2) Friday night.

The Cougars beat Mead 51-40 on the road Saturday after defeating Tekamah-Herman 56-52 at home Friday night.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast only has 9 girls on their varsity roster, but they have found ways to make the most of what they have.

Both teams are playing great basketball right now, and honestly I could see this game going either way.

This is a tough game to call as to trying to predict who wins and who loses.

I would have to give the slight advantage to the Cougars with the game being on their home floor, but Pender has a lot of offensive weapons.

Anderson, Ballinger, Jacobsen, English, and Sorenson are playing about as well as any group of individuals could be right now.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the Pendragons win.

It should be a great game between two outstanding teams. I think it could be a high scoring affair, but I could also see both teams clamping down on defense.

Either way I look for things to come down to the wire. It would really surprise me if this game isn't decided by single digits.

The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. and can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
