Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys beat Tekamah-Herman, fall to Mead; Girls beat both
The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys Basketball team went 1-1 this past weekend, defeating Tekamah-Herman 60-43 at home Friday night before losing 53-34 at Mead on Saturday. Co-Head Coach Derek Lahm sums up his team's play.
"We're learning quite a bit. Tekamah we had some good moments, and we had some moments where we're still trying to learn and grow as a team. Against Mead we played really well for just over three quarters, and things just kind of didn't go our way. Breaks didn't go our way. And we end up losing by a pretty significant amount of points. But I think we gained quite a bit of things that we can work on, things that we need to improve, especially as we get going here in the conference season and conference tournament coming up."
The Cougars led the Tigers 11-2 after one. Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored the Tigers 18-11 in the second quarter to take a 29-13 lead into the locker room.
Tekamah-Herman won the third quarter 13-10 to make it a 39-26 game at the end of three.
The Cougars amassed 21 fourth quarter points while the Tigers scored 17.
Marcus Hegy finished with 24 points and 8 rebounds while Alec Anderson totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Raiders led Lyons-Decatur Northeast 7-3 at the end of one.
The Cougars won the second quarter 16-15 to make it a 22-19 game at halftime.
Mead outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 16-12 in the third quarter to go up 38-31 after three.
The Raiders notched 15 fourth quarter points and limited the Cougars to 3.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast played good basketball over the weekend. All was good minus the fourth quarter against Mead.
The Cougars (8-2) battle Pender (1-11) on the road Friday night.
Lahm says his team needs to be ready to play.
"They always come and they give us always a good battle. And so we really need to come out and play our brand of basketball. We kind of need to get back to just playing the hoops and getting people our matchups that we need to get the ball and just score and play defense with some intensity and fire."
Lyons-Decatur Northeast certainly needs to play well, and if they do, there's probably a good chance they will win.
The Pendragons have fought hard this season, their efforts just haven't yielded them much success.
Hegy, Montana Riecken, Anderson, Jon Christiansen, Cole Christoffersen, and others need to play well for the Cougars.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast needs to get back on track given the fourth quarter they had against the Raiders.
The Cougars need to come out and play well in all facets of the game to get back on the winning side of things.
One setback isn't the end of the world, but Lyons-Decatur Northeast needs to make sure they don't have another setback against Pender.
The game can be heard on 107.9 the Bull following the girls game, which is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Girls Basketball team is 9-2 on the season thanks to wins over Tekamah-Herman and Mead last weekend. Head Coach Rex Haskell says his team made things difficult on the Tigers on both ends of the floor.
"Well Tekamah's a team that always plays tough, and they got a good inside game, but our girls showed up and really clamped down on defense, and stopped their inside play, and made it difficult on them. And offensively we were aggressive and we looked to score, and they had trouble, so it was a good win."
The Cougars beat the Tigers 56-52 at home Friday night before downing the Raiders 51-40 on the road Saturday.
The Cougars led the Tigers 12-11 at the end of one. Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored Tekamah-Herman 15-8 in the second quarter to lead 27-19 at halftime.
The Tigers won the third quarter 17-15 to make it a 42-36 game at the end of three.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast led the Raiders 8-6 at the end of one. The Cougars outscored Mead 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 25-16 lead into the locker room.
Both teams scored 7 third quarter points. Lyons-Decatur Northeast won the fourth quarter 19-17.
Wakeley had a team-high 12 points. Tessie Collins notched 11 while Jessen registered 10.
The Cougars played outstanding basketball last weekend. Lyons-Decatur Northeast picked up two huge wins.
The Cougars (9-2) battle Pender (8-6) on the road Friday night.
The Pendragons defeated Homer 70-42 on the road Tuesday night.
Haskell feels either team could win.
"I look for it to be a battle that could go either way. So it's just going to be who hits shots and who makes the fewest mistakes, and see what happens."
It will be important for Lyons-Decatur Northeast to slow down the Pendragons' offensive attack.
Pender has a number of players who can hurt people, including Justice Sorenson, Hallie Ballinger, Kamryn Anderson, Amber English, Rylee Lehmkuhl, and others.
This is going to be a very difficult game for the Cougars, in my opinion. The Pendragons have pushed some of the tougher teams on their schedule.
This should be a great game given the way both teams are playing right now.
I fully expect the game to go down to the wire. I think things could be decided on the final possession, or at the very least, the final seconds.
Emotions and energy should be high for this game. I fully expect both teams to get after one another.
Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m., and the game can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
