Howells-Dodge Boys 1-2 in last three games; Girls 1-1 in last two
The Howells-Dodge Boys went 1-1 at the Homer Holiday Tournament last week, losing 72-35 to Guardian Angels Central Catholic last Tuesday before beating the host Knights 64-31 in the consolation game last Wednesday.
The Jaguars finished up the Knight Classic in Fremont on Monday, losing 85-62 to Winnebago.
The Bluejays led Howells-Dodge 19-9 at the end of one. GACC won the second quarter 16-11 to take a 35-20 lead into the locker room.
The Bluejays outscored the Jaguars 14-11 in the second quarter to make it a 49-31 game at the end of three.
GACC notched 23 fourth quarter points compared to just 4 for Howells-Dodge.
Mitchell Prusa had a team-high 11 points for the Jaguars while Tyler Polacek totaled 9.
Howells-Dodge led Homer 12-10 after one. The Jaguars won the second quarter 12-11 to lead 24-21 at halftime.
Howells-Dodge outscored the Knights 26-2 in the third quarter to go up 50-23 at the end of three.
The Jaguars notched 14 fourth quarter points compared to 8 for Homer.
Head Coach Cole Fischer says strong defense and a strong third quarter made the difference in the game. "We played a great second half defensively. Our defense led to our offense and got us into a flow in the 3rd quarter. The 3rd quarter was the best quarter of the year for us. "
Polacek finished with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Luke Renter added 11 points while Nolan Lund totaled 9 points and 9 rebounds. Prusa and Dylan Kucera notched 7 points apiece.
Howells-Dodge led the Indians 19-12 after one. Winnebago outscored the Jaguars 31-9 in the second quarter to take a 43-28 lead into the locker room.
The Indians tripled up Howells-Dodge 30-10 in the third quarter to go up 73-38 at the end of three.
The Jaguars doubled up Winnebago 24-12 in the fourth quarter.
Fischer says he was encouraged by his team's play. "We came out and played a great first quarter. As the game progressed they shot the ball very well....that's what good teams do. I'm proud of the boys' effort and passion."
Polacek finished with a team-high 17 points. Renter notched 12 while Prusa added 9.
Howells-Dodge had a tough go of things against the Bluejays and Indians. The Jaguars played well at times against both teams, Howells-Dodge just didn't have enough to hang with either team for an entire game.
The Jaguars (5-7) take on Humphrey St. Francis (10-0) on the road Friday night.
The Flyers won the Nebraska Wesleyan Holiday Tournament, downing BDS 49-43 in the championship game.
Humphrey St. Francis is a very good team, and beating them at their place certainly won't be easy for Howells-Dodge.
The Jaguars have to play a complete game if they hope to hang with and ultimately beat the Flyers.
Polacek, Prusa, Renter, Kucera, Lund, and others have to play well for Howells-Dodge if the Jaguars hope to come away with a victory.
Howells-Dodge needs multiple players to reach double figures, and needs everyone to be clicking on all cylinders to knock off a team like Humphrey St. Francis.
The Jaguars have played well for a half or in quarters against some of the tougher teams on their schedule, they just haven't been able to put together four quarters of good basketball on a consistent basis.
That has to change for Howells-Dodge if the Jaguars hope to pick up a signature win Friday night.
Howells-Dodge is definitely capable of beating the Flyers, they just need some things to go their way.
I look for the Jaguars to go into Humphrey and give Humphrey St. Francis all they can handle. I don't know if Howells-Dodge will win, but I think the Jaguars are certainly capable of making things close, respectable, and interesting.
The Howells-Dodge Girls went 1-1 at the Homer Holiday Tournament, defeating the host Knights 66-19 last Tuesday before falling 65-48 to Guardian Angels Central Catholic in the championship game last Wednesday.
The Jaguars led Homer 21-5 at the end of one. Howells-Dodge outscored the Knights 19-6 in the second quarter to take a 40-11 lead into the locker room.
The Jaguars won the third quarter 17-6 to lead 57-17 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge notched 9 fourth quarter points compared to just 2 for Homer.
Kalli Brester led the way with 15 points. Sam Brester added 12 points and 7 rebounds while Emily Ritzdorf notched 9 points. Erin Prusa and Kelly Cech registered 7 apiece.
The Bluejays led the Jaguars 15-14 after one. GACC outscored Howells-Dodge 20-9 in the second quarter to go up 35-23 at halftime.
Both teams scored 12 third quarter points, and the score at the end of three was 47-35 in favor of the Bluejays.
GACC won the fourth quarter 18-13.
Kalli Brester had a team-high 12 points. Ritzdorf added 9 while Chelsea Bayer scored 8. Sam Brester totaled 7 points and 8 rebounds while Cech notched 7 points.
The Jaguars honestly played a pretty good game against the Bluejays. a 17-point loss is nothing to get excited about, but when you compare the score to other games GACC has won, it's not all that bad.
Howells-Dodge (7-3) takes on Humphrey St. Francis (6-5) on the road Friday night.
The Flyers lost 51-44 at Twin River in overtime Tuesday night.
Humphrey St. Francis has lost to and beat some good teams so the Flyers are definitely no slouch.
Humphrey St. Francis should have the Jaguars' full focus and attention.
I'm sure Howells-Dodge knows they need to play well to beat the Flyers.
Kalli Brester, Sam Brester, Ritzdorf, Bayer, Prusa, and Cech all need to play well for the Jaguars.
All six need to continue to step up the way they did in the Homer Holiday Tournament.
Having extra time to prepare for Humphrey St. Francis should help the Jaguars.
Howells-Dodge should feel encouraged by the way they played against GACC and Homer, but should be ready and anxious to get back out on the court and get back to their winning ways.
This team has to remain hungry, and can't be satisfied or complacent by how they have played so far.
I fully expect the Jaguars to win Friday night. The game might be decided by like 10 points, but either way I think Howells-Dodge will find a way to win.
The Jaguars also have a difficult home game with Plainview on Saturday so the need to play well this weekend is there for Howells-Dodge.
