Stanton Boys lose to Boone Central/Newman Grove, beat Madison; Girls beat both

The Stanton Boys are 1-1 in their last two games, losing 74-58 at Boone Central/Newman Grove Friday night before defeating Madison 69-50 on the road Tuesday night.

The Cardinals led the Mustangs 17-8 at the end of one. Boone Central/Newman Grove won the second quarter 19-17 to take a 36-25 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinals doubled up Stanton 24-12 in the third quarter to go up 60-37 at the end of three.

The Mustangs notched 21 fourth quarter points compared to 14 for Boone Central/Newman Grove.

Kyle Sperl led the way with 25 points. Brook Klinetobe added 14.

The Dragons held a 15-12 advantage over Stanton at the end of one. The Mustangs tripled up Madison 18-6 in the second quarter to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room.

Stanton outscored the Dragons 23-17 in the third quarter to lead 53-38 after three.

The Mustangs won the fourth quarter 16-12.

Myles Nickolite had 14 points and 9 rebounds for Stanton while Klinetobe and Sperl had 14 points apiece. Mitchael Sieh totaled 9 points.

Stanton played well against Madison, but struggled against the Cardinals.

The Mustangs (12-4) take on Crofton (1-12) on the road Friday night.

The Warriors lost 51-44 at home to Wayne Tuesday night.

It has been a difficult season for Crofton, but the Warriors have played a gauntlet of a schedule and lost a number of close games.

Crofton isn't your typical 1-12 team.

Stanton has to take the Warriors seriously. If the Mustangs take Crofton lightly and aren't ready to play, the Warriors could beat them.

I don't see it happening, but the possibility is there if Stanton doesn't come ready to play.

The Mustangs have to come out and play their game, execute their offense, and play well on defense.

Stanton has to make smart passes, work for good shots, get to the free throw line, and take care of the ball.

The Mustangs also have to box out, contest shots, run the floor, pressure the ball, and create turnovers.

Stanton needs to try and get out and run whenever possible to convert some easy baskets and layups.

The Mustangs should want to be up tempo and high flying whenever possible.

The more points Stanton puts on the board, the better chance they will have of winning.

The same goes for defense in that the fewer the points the Mustangs allow, the better chance they will have of coming out on top.

The Stanton Girls defeated Boone Central/Newman Grove 68-45 on the road Friday night, and took out Madison 61-38 on the road Tuesday night.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 13-2 lead on the Cardinals at the end of one. Stanton outscored Boone Central/Newman Grove 21-8 in the second quarter to take a 34-10 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinals won the second half 35-34.

Hiliary Huss led the way with 39 points and 8 rebounds. Jessie Brandl added 8 points while Alex Oestreich totaled 7.

The Mustangs held a 17-5 advantage on the Dragons at the end of one. Stanton quadrupled up Madison 24-6 in the second quarter to lead 41-11 at halftime.

The Mustangs won the third quarter 11-5 to go up 52-16 at the end of three.

The Dragons put up 22 points in the fourth quarter compared to 9 for Stanton.

Huss led all scorers with 34 points. Brandl notched a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds while Leah Arens totaled 8 rebounds.

The Mustangs, and in particular Huss, have played outstanding and amazing basketball the last two times out.

Stanton (11-5) will have to play even more incredible basketball Friday night when they take on Crofton (13-2) on the road.

The Warriors blew out Wayne 69-27 at home Tuesday night.

Even though they have lost a couple this season, Crofton is still an incredible team.

Huss and others need to play well for the Mustangs to have a chance.

I don't know if Huss will be able to do it all by herself in this one. She needs big time help, in my opinion.

Brandl, Arens, Oestreich, Ali Wade, and Bree Burtwhistle are all capable of providing it to her, in my opinion.

Stanton is not yet a complete team, in my opinion, as Huss has been a one-woman show for the most part.

Brandl and others have stepped up at times and gotten into double figures, but the Mustangs need 3, 4, or 5 players reaching or getting near double figures to be a lethal team.

I don't want to say go away from Huss, by all means give her the same amount of touches, but also spread the wealth a little more.

Other players need to step up and contribute offensively for this team to be complete. That's just my take on Stanton right now.

Huss's scoring makes the Mustangs a good team. Get 4 or 5 players in double figures on a nightly basis, and this team becomes great, in my opinion.
