The BRLD Boys Basketball Team cruised to a 71-15 win at Tekamah-Herman Friday night, and then won 43-33 at West Point-Beemer on Saturday before dismantling Homer 91-40 at home Monday night.
The Wolverines went up 28-2 on Tekamah-Herman after one, and outscored the Tigers 20-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 48-4 lead into the locker room.
BRLD won the 3rd quarter 9-2 to go up 57-6 at the end of three.
The Wolverines won the 4th quarter 14-9.
The Wolverines went up 13-8 on the Cadets after one, and won the 2nd quarter 4-3 to take a 17-11 lead into the locker room.
BRLD outscored the Cadets 16-13 in the 3rd quarter to go up 33-24 at the end of three.
The Wolverines won the 4th quarter 10-9.
BRLD led the Knights 41-22 at halftime. The Wolverines outscored Homer 28-11 in the 3rd quarter to go up 69-33 at the end of three.
BRLD outscored the Knights 22-7 in the 4th quarter.
The Wolverines played really good on Friday and Tuesday I thought, and well enough on Saturday to win.
BRLD (10-1) takes on Oakland-Craig (8-6) on the road Friday night in action that will be aired on 107.9 the Bull.
The Knights hammered Walthill 88-36 on the road Tuesday night.
Head Coach Cory Meyer says Oakland-Craig is deep, talented, and experienced. "O-C has a lot of players that can play; their bench is deep and can put fresh players in more often than we can. They have a lot of seniors that start and have a lot of experience but their sophomores and the Thompson kid can come in a light a fire. We need to do our best defensively to contain their shooters and not let them get started. O-C is a dangerous team that can play with anyone especially if they get on a roll."
The Knights had four players in double digits against the Blujays.
Meyer says contesting shots and handling the ball are keys to a victory. "First thing we need to do is get past their press and not let that get to us. They like to press and trap as often as possible so taking care of the ball and limiting our turnovers will be important. O-C is a team that can get hot and shoot well from the outside so we need to contest all their shots and hope they don't get into a rhythm. We also need to improve our communicating on defense."
This should be a great game in what I consider to be an evolving rivalry between the two teams.
BRLD has been very consistent this year while Oakland-Craig has kind of been up and down.
Conventional wisdom says the Wolverines will win, but anything can happen, just ask Howells-Dodge.
The Knights just went off on Tuesday too so they figure to be ready.
It should be a good game.
These teams had a heck of a battle in Sub-Districts last year, and I look for this game to be really good also.
There is a lot of experience and talent back for both teams.
If Oakland-Craig plays the way they did Tuesday night then this figures to be one heck of a ball game.
It should be an exciting, action packed game that's for sure.
You'll want to join former Sports Director Tom McMahon on the call.
The game will start after the girls game, which is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on the Bull.
The BRLD Girls won 62-18 at Tekamah-Herman Friday night and then handed West Point-Beemer their first loss of the season on the road Saturday, winning 49-33, before narrowly escaping Homer 56-54 at home Monday night.
The Wolverines went up 8-4 on the Cadets at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 15-13 to take a 23-17 lead into the locker room.
BRLD outscored West Point-Beemer 12-2 in the 3rd quarter to go up 35-19 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 14 points in the 4th quarter.
Head Coach Rod Peters says defense was the difference in the game. "I thought we came out and executed on the defensive end of the court. West Point Beemer is a very good team so I was really proud of how the girls competed."
The Knights led the Wolverines 14-12 after one. BRLD won the 2nd quarter 14-12 to tie the game at 26 at halftime.
The Wolverines won the 3rd quarter 13-12 to go up 39-38 at the end of three.
BRLD won the 4th quarter 17-16.
The Wolverines escaped on Monday. Probably a little post West Point-Beemer hangover I would say.
BRLD (10-3) has a monster game at Oakland-Craig (12-0) Friday night in action that will be aired on 107.9 the Bull.
Oakland-Craig spanked Elmwood-Murdock 62-38 at home on Saturday.
Peters says O-C is the real deal. "Oakland-Craig is obviously a very good team. They are very well coached and have very good players so it will be a tough game for us on Friday night. We need to go out and compete at a very high level on Friday night to be competitive."
The biggest reason why the Knights are as good as they are is because of Dacey Nelson.
The senior, who missed all of last year with an ACL injury, is averaging 27 points per game this season.
Peters says Nelson is a special player and has a good supporting cast. "Dacey is an excellent player and I believe she has some really good teammates so we will try our best to be competitive with them."
It will be interesting to see if BRLD can slow her down at all.
Oakland-Craig Head Coach Joe Anderson said many teams have ran junk defenses to try and slow her down, but have been unsuccessful.
The Wolverines went Triangle and Two on the Cadets on Saturday so I wonder if BRLD might try a box-and-one on Nelson.
The Wolverines are playing about as well right as they have been all season so I feel this is good a time as any for BRLD to play Oakland-Craig.
The Wolverines are going to need to play a great game to come out on top there's no doubt about it.
BRLD is definitely capable of winning though, in my opinion.
I don't know how many people thought the Wolverines would beat West Point-Beemer, myself included, so BRLD has to be feeling pretty confident and comfortable in the spoiler/underdog role right now.
Everyone talks about the Knights and Nelson, and rightfully so, but the Wolverines deserve some love, respect, and attention as well.
BRLD is having a really nice season, and what they are doing doesn't and shouldn't go unnoticed.
Friday night's game is scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. on the Bull.
