Stanton Boys 1-2 in last three games; Girls 2-1 in same stretch

The Stanton Boys Basketball Team fell 58-49 at Wisner-Pilger on Thursday, December 20th before falling 55-45 to O'Neill at their own Holiday Tournament on Saturday and then winning 49-37 over West Holt in the 3rd place game on Monday.

The Gators led the Mustangs 21-11 after one before Stanton won the 2nd quarter 14-9 to make it a 30-25 game at halftime.

Wisner-Pilger won the 3rd quarter 14-11 to extend their lead to 44-36 at the end of three.

The Gators won the 4th quarter 14-13.

TJ Larson had 14 points while Nathan Arens totaled 13 points and 9 rebounds. Marcus Spotanski registered 11 points and 8 rebounds.

The Eagles went up 12-8 after one and won the 2nd quarter 12-11 to take a 24-19 lead into the locker room.

O'Neill outscored Stanton 17-13 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 41-32 at the end of three.

The Eagles won the 4th quarter 14-13.

Spotanski led the way with 19 points while Arens posted 7 rebounds.

The Mustangs led the Huskies 9-4 after one, and outscored them 10-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 19-10 lead into the locker room.

Stanton outscored West Holt 19-11 in the 3rd quarter to go up 38-21 at the end of three.

The Huskies won the 4th quarter 16-11.

Spotanski had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while Larson totaled 11 points, and Arens added 8.

The Mustangs are starting to play better basketball and get more consistent scoring.

Stanton (2-7) hosts Oakland-Craig (7-5) Friday night.

The Knights won 60-36 over Wilber-Clatonia in the 3rd place game of the Malcolm Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

Oakland-Craig has kind of been up and down this year so I think the type of game this will be depends on how well the Knights come out.

The Mustangs are getting better though, and I fully expect Stanton to put up a good fight and make things close and interesting at the very least.

Spotanski, Larson, and Arens have really been the key go to players for the Mustangs over the past few games.

They have to keep up their scoring prowess and others have to follow suit.

Stanton has to be sound offensively and defensively Friday night, and can't turn the ball over.

The Mustangs have to rebound well and limit Oakland-Craig to one shot per possession.

Arens and Sam Bates have to be big down low for Stanton.

The Mustangs have to step up their play and keep growing confidence wise.

The score for both these teams against Wisner-Pilger was almost identical, and I look for Stanton to come out and play a good game.

I think this will be a heck of a ball game that comes down to the wire.

The Mustangs have been pretty competitive for the most part this season, and I look for that to continue Friday night.

The next step is to get over the hump and win some of these games, and we will find out if Stanton can get the job done.

The Mustangs have to try and slow down the likes of Garrison Dodge, Colton Thomsen, and Robby Mayberry.

Oakland-Craig has good guard play and a big man in Wyatt Seagren while Stanton has good post play so we'll see how things shake out Friday night.

The Mustangs are at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday.

The Stanton Girls were upset 38-21 at rival Wisner-Pilger on Thursday, December 20th before regrouping and winning their own Holiday Tournament, which included a 50-41 win over O'Neill on Saturday and a 46-28 Championship win over West Holt on Monday.

The Gators tripled up the Mustangs 6-2 in the 1st quarter before winning the 2nd quarter 7-5 to take a 13-7 lead into the locker room.

Wisner-Pilger outscored Stanton 10-1 in the 3rd quarter to go up 23-8 at the end of three.

The Gators won the 4th quarter 15-13.

The Mustangs led the Eagles 9-7 after one. Both teams scored 13 second quarter points and the score was 22-20 at halftime in favor of Stanton.

Stanton won the 3rd quarter 8-5 to push the lead up to 5 at 30-25 at the end of three.

The Mustangs outscored O'Neill 20-16 in the 4th quarter.

Jessie Brandl and Liz Christensen had 15 points apiece while Bree Burtwhistle notched 11. Jaiden Hartl added 7.

Stanton led the Huskies 16-7 after one, and outscored West Holt 17-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 33-14 lead into the locker room.

The Huskies won the 3rd quarter 10-9 to make it a 42-24 game at the end of three.

Both teams scored 4 points in the 4th quarter.

Brandl posted 19 points and 9 rebounds while Hartl notched 12 points.

A big turnaround for the Mustangs following the loss to the Gators no doubt.

Stanton (6-4) hosts Oakland-Craig (10-0) Friday night.

The Knights won the Malcolm Holiday Tournament, defeating the host Clippers 48-39 in the Championship game on Monday.

Oakland-Craig is certainly playing great basketball, and has all season while being very consistent.

Dacey Nelson has been lights out for the Knights, and Oakland-Craig is expected to get Kennedy Benne back if they haven't already.

Stanton was undefeated heading into Oakland last year and got upset so we'll see if the Mustangs can return the favor.

If Stanton can slow down Nelson, and assuming Benne isn't back yet, then I think an upset is possible.

If the Knights have Benne back then I don't know.

The Mustangs just have to go out there and play their best and give it all they got.

I thought Stanton got much better on both ends of the floor starting with the Holiday Tournament.

Perhaps the tournament getting delayed wasn't the worst thing for the Mustangs seeing as they probably got some extra practice time in.

I'm not sure what clicked for Stanton, but I look for the Mustangs to go on a run in the second half of the season.

What Stanton has to do is cut out the bad losses.

The Mustangs lost to Wisner-Pilger and Howells-Dodge, two games I'm sure they would love to have back.

We'll see if those games come into play at all later on in the season, but for now all Stanton can do is focus on Oakland-Craig.

A win over the Knights would be so big and uplifting for the Mustangs without a doubt.

It can definitely happen too Stanton just has to play the way they did on Monday.

With some more practice time I look for the Mustangs to give Oakland-Craig their best shot come Friday night.
